The Salem Police Department has released their reports for the beginning of September. On Sunday, September 2nd, at 10:06 that night, an officer made contact with a 31-year old St. James male who had three active Phelps County warrants. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending extradition. Later that night at 10:21, an officer was dispatched to the Walnut Bowl parking lot in reference to a fight in progress. That investigation revealed that a 27-year old Salem male had assaulted a 26-year old Salem male. On Monday, September 3rd, at 12:08 in the early morning, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation revealed that someone unknown took a purse and contents valued at $19 from a vehicle parked in the 800 block of East Hawkins. Later that afternoon at 4:00, an officer was contacted in reference to a stolen EBT card. The investigation revealed that someone unknown took the card from a purse near the 1200 block of Highway 32 and made $224 in unauthorized purchases. Later on that night at 9:39, an officer conducted a search of a residence in the 800 block of East Hawkins, which led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem female for possession of opium. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Tuesday, September 4th at 11:35 in the morning, an officer was contacted in reference a stolen license plate. The investigation revealed that someone unknown took a license plate from a white 2006 Infinity parked in the 1400 block of South Water. Later that afternoon at 1:19, an officer was dispatched to the 200 block of West Hunt in reference to a domestic disturbance. That investigation revealed that a 19-year old Salem female had assaulted a 24-year old Salem female. She was arrested for domestic assault, assaulting an officer, and resisting arrest. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Wednesday, September 5th at 9:10 in the morning, an officer was contacted in reference to a stolen license plate. The investigation revealed that someone unknown took a license plate from a silver 1999 Jeep. Later that evening at 5:23, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone unknown took an iPad and cover, valued at $540, from a residence in the 1800 block of South Oak. Residents of Salem and Dent County have the opportunity to help shape the future direction of their community during a series of meetings beginning September 25th. The Dent County and Salem strategic plan was initially created in 1994 as a means to identify the goals and objectives of the city and county comprised of issues that residents and leaders wish to address. The plan also provides schedules and funding options to accomplish those goals and was last updated in 1997. The first of six work sessions to update the plan is set for Tuesday, September 25 at Salem City Hall. Residents of the City of Salem and Dent County are invited and encouraged to attend. The City of Salem is sponsoring the effort and contracted with Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) to help lead the sessions and update the plan. The Dent County Commission gave their support of this project. Each of the six work sessions will take place at Salem City Hall Auditorium at 6 p.m. and are expected to run until 8 p.m. The rest of the work sessions are schedule as follows: October. 23rd, December 11th, February 5th, 2013, March 19th and May 28th.
New hunters and those who want to mentor new hunters should plan now for the approaching hunting season, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Seasons for several small-game species, including squirrel, already are open, and archery deer and turkey seasons and early teal, rail, snipe and Canada goose seasons are coming up soon, followed by duck, goose, urban deer, rabbit and firearms turkey seasons, plus youth seasons for ducks, deer, quail and pheasants in October. By November 1st, no fewer than 16 seasons run concurrently. Wouldn’t it be a pity to miss any of this because you couldn’t buy a hunting permit or were not allowed to mentor a novice hunter because you didn’t have a hunter education certification card? If you were born on or after January 1st, 1967, and are 16 years of age or older you must complete an approved hunter education certification class or buy an Apprentice Hunter Authorization before buying hunting permits. Youth under 16 years of age do not need hunter education certification to hunt any Missouri species while hunting with an adult mentor. Adult hunters over 18 years of age and born after January 1st, 1967, may need hunter education to mentor hunters who are not certified and not hunting on a landowner permit. Most states now have hunter education requirements and recognize each other’s certification, so taking a class in Missouri qualifies you to buy permits in other states. The longer you wait, the greater the chances that classes will be full. To find a class near you, visit mdc.mo.gov.
The University of Missouri Wurdack Farm at Cook Station will host a Management Intensive Grazing School on September 27th and 28th. The two-day program will include guest speakers covering the topics of grazing system layout and design, watering systems, fence systems, soil fertility, livestock nutrition, and forage quality and growth. Additionally, two farm tours will be included to allow participants to get hands on experience, and observe existing grazing systems. The cost of the two-day school is $85 per person or $120 per farm couple. This fee includes the cost of meals and the Resource books and other handout materials pertinent to the course. A $50 advance deposit will be required to reserve a space, and must be received by no later than September 21st. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at the 2012 Awards Dinner. The banquet will be held on Thursday, November 1st at The Gathering Place of the Grace Community Church located at 600 South Water Street beginning at 6:00 pm. This year the Chamber Board decided to only hold a dinner to recognize and honor award nominees and recipients. Awards will be given in 6 categories: Business of the Year with 0-10 employees, Business of the Year with 11-25 employees, Business of the Year with 26-50 employees, Business of the Year with over 50 employees, Non-Profit Organization of the Year and the Customer Service Award (employee of a Chamber of Commerce member). Businesses, organizations and/or individuals have to be a current chamber member and/or an employee of a chamber business. Criteria and eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main Street or requested from chamber@salemmo.com. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to Mountain Grove in two sets, losing both 25-12, on Tuesday. The JV also lost in two sets, both 25-14. Salem will play at Ava on Thursday.
Jon Jay drove in two and Kyle Lohse pitched seven scoreless innings as the St. Louis Cardinals took a 4-1 win over the Houston Astros in the opener of a three-game set. Daniel Descalso drove in a run and scored for the Cardinals, who have won their past two games to move 1 1/2 games ahead of the Dodgers for the final wild card spot in the National League. Lohse (15-3) bounced back from his first loss in three months with a four-hit, two-walk outing. He struck out five, drove in a run and scored once in the win. Jason Motte pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up 36th save of the season. The Cardinals and Astros will play again tonight at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.
Alex Rios hit the game-deciding solo home run in the seventh inning, as the Chicago White Sox clipped the Kansas City Royals, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Billy Butler drove in both runs for the Royals, who have lost four of five. Luke Hochevar was charged with seven hits and three runs over seven full frames. The Royals and White Sox play again tonight.

Funeral services for Jim Asher of East End, age 68, will be today at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral services for Larry Whitaker of Salem will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Dry Fork Church.
Funeral services for Gilbert Ray Welch of West Monroe, Louisiana and formerly of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Tower Grove Baptist Church in St. Louis. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 at the church. Interment will be Saturday morning at 10:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Tower Grove Baptist Church beautification fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
