The Salem R-80 Board of Education conducted their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices boardroom. After approval of the agenda, and the  substitute list, were the approval of program evaluations for safety, transportation and the co and extra-curricular activities. In communications, Superintendent Cindy Rumpf stated that money donated by the Judson-Young Foundation purchased the new risers for the choir. Rumpf then reported that there was nothing new to report at this time as far as budget updates. There were no new revenues, but that the budget would be revised in December due to title funds at that time. Rumpf stated that to date, a total of $553,066 ARRA funds had been spent. Had the money not been used by September 30th, the school would have to return the money to the federal government.  The Board was then presented the Dent County One Ton Weight Loss Challenge sponsored by the Dent County Schools which includes: Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III, North Wood R-IV, and Salem R-80; along with the Council for a Healthy Dent County, South Central Nutrition and Susie Cahill (fitness instructor/personal trainer). The ultimate goal is to have 2,000 pounds (1 ton) of weight loss in Dent County between October 1st of this year and May 1st of next year. The cost is $5 per person with teams consisting of two or more people. For more information they can contact Susie Cahill at 247-1877 or Sherry Lea at 729-8163. A celebration will then be held May 12, 2012.  Rumpf then quickly went over the 5-year planning committee minutes from their meetings for goals for Salem R-80. From those minutes a couple of goals were discussed for the 2011/2012 school year including; revising the support staff salary schedules and to pursue the purchase of a new phone system. In new business there was a demonstration of the CIA/PLC Leadership Teams.  Each teacher presented the importance of it not being about the teachers teaching, but the students learning that makes the difference. Bus routes were then approved, and the Board then approved the Board Policy concerning rent fees for “for profit” businesses. The Board approved $25 an hour for classroom fees plus $10 for internet access and classes must be over by 10:00 pm. They also approved charging $250 for gym fees and 10% of the gate. The Board will still have the final vote on anyone wishing to use their facilities. Board then voted to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

An accident occurred at 5:10 Saturday evening in Dent County on County Road 5600 about 14 miles southeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Polaris Sportsman driven by 40-year old Christopher Watson of Salem, struck the rear of a 2006 Polaris Sportsman driven by 42-year old John Watson of Salem and a 2007 Honda Ranger driven by 30-year old Justin Brown of Salem. The 2008 Polaris overturned and Christopher Watson was ejected. Christopher Watson and an occupant on the Honda, 31-year old Kristy McElfresh of Salem, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. The 2008 Polaris sustained moderate damage, and the 2006 Polaris and Honda sustained minor damage. All the vehicles were removed from the scene by a private party.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their next regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, the board will hear bids for a trailer mounted tower light before approving the consent agenda. The alderman will hear a report from the Planning and Zoning Board meeting held September 12^th before Director of Engineering and Public Works Director Bill Huffman gives his report. Mayor Gary Brown will then follow with his report and the alderman will have their chance to address issues. In new business, the board will discuss who will attend the annual Lagers meeting before approving the bills. The board is then scheduled to go into closed session to discuss personnel and contracts. The regular meeting of the city of Salem Board of Alderman tonight is open to the public.

The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County will conduct their monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 20^th at the Dent County Community Center beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the minutes from the previous meeting and disbursements, there will be variuos reports including financail reports, the water testing reports, presidents reprot and a bookkeeping report. The board will address any other business that may be presented and then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County is open to the public.

Leah Whelan was crowned the Homecoming Queen Friday night before the Salem Tiger and Willow Springs Football game. Her court featured seniors Crystal Prince and BaileyBarnes, junior Alyvia Toman and sophomore attendant Gracie Fiaoni.

Junior Rictor scored three touchdowns and rushed for 128 yards on nine carries as the Salem Tigers beat the Willow Springs Bears in their Homecoming game Friday night, 34-7. Johnny Boyd and Sammy Ibrahim also scored for Salem who improved to 2-2 on the year and in the SCA. The Tigers will host Mountain Grove Friday night at 7:00.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped the Potosi Tournament Championship game to Ste. Genevieve on Saturday by the score of 9-8. The Lady Tigers are 9-5 on the year and are scheduled to face Dixon this afternoon at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Field.

Behind a pair of Allen Craig home runs, a two-run blast by Albert Pujols and a stellar outing from Chris Carpenter, the Cardinals continued their late-season surge with a 5-0 win over the newly crowned five-time NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies. Carpenter (10-9) scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out five over eight innings. Fernando Salas pitched the ninth to preserve the shutout. St. Louis closed to within 3 1/2 games of the wild card-leading Atlanta Braves. The Cards and Phillies play again tonight at 6:00 on KSMO Radio.

A.J. Pierzynski finished 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and four RBI to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 10-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the finale of a four-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, while Johnny Giavotella picked up three hits including an RBI triple for the Royals, who had their season-best seven-game winning streak ended. The Royals are off today.

The Missouri Tigers pounded Western Illinois Saturday by the score of 69-0 as James Franklin threw three touchdown passes and Henry Posey rushed for two scores. Missouri allowed Western Illinois only one first down in the game. The Tigers will face the #1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday night. Missouri is 2-1 on the year.

Matthew Stafford threw four touchdown passes and the Detroit Lions rolled to a 48-3 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs at Ford Field. Meanwhile, the Chiefs (0-2) have been outscored by a margin of 89-10 in its first two games of the season and lost running back Jamaal Charles early in the game to a left knee injury that saw him carted off the field. Matt Cassel had a rough day as well as he went just 15-for-22 for 133 yards with three interceptions and a lost fumble for Kansas City, which has lost four in a row including a playoff loss to Baltimore last season.

The St. Louis Rams and New York Giants will play tonight at 7:30 in New York. Both teams lost in the first week of play.

Funeral services for Henry W. Keel, Sr. of Salem, age 59, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Mabel Irene Warren of Salem, age 74, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Memorial services for Betty A. Hart of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Salem United Methodist Church or the Dent County Museum.
