The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in attendance to notify the commissioners that she has been elected to the Missouri County Treasurer’s Association Board. This occurred at their annual conference that Williams attended at Big Cedar Lodge near Branson. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2470, 5650 and 6400; and brush would be cut on county road 2400. Purcell reported that two men were hauling brown rock and that another was going to Springfield to get a load of oil for chip and seal repair. He went on to say that the chip and seal roads 4110 and 4120 would have areas being repaired with cold mix. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2270, 2520, 2570, 4280 and 5225. He also said that materials would be added to county roads 2260 and 2270, and brush would be cut on county roads 2530 and 4380. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the External Relations Committee meeting held last Thursday at the MRPC where the committee finalized the plans for the annual awards dinner in November in Potosi. They also began the search for the legislative priorities that will be discussed with the state legislature in 2014. At the MRPC meeting, Skiles said that Joe Driscoll, Director of the Leonard Wood Institute, presented a number of facts and figures about Fort Leonard Wood and it’s importance to our area and state. Driscoll said that the fort is the 5
th largest employer in Missouri and is directly responsible for 27,445 jobs. He also reported that 1.5 billion dollars in annual expenditures come from Fort Leonard Wood. He said in the land use survey, 47% of the area around the fort is national forest land and another 48% is agricultural so the area would be prime for expansion if needed. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she has finished mailing out the new voter ID cards to everyone. If the information on the card is correct, keep the card and use it when you go to vote. If the information is not correct, you can make changes on the reverse side of the card and send it back to the county clerk’s office in the mail. You can also come by the courthouse and go to the clerk’s office, or call the clerk’s office at 729-4144 and correct the information. At the last meeting, the commission unanimously approved their intention to publish their use of a portion of the Title III funds to create an inventory of low water crossings, box culverts and small bridges within the county. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 5:30 Sunday evening in Dent County on Highway 32 about twelve miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 69-year old Milton Tootle of Kansas City was riding a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle east when he lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to overturn in the roadway. The motorcycle then slid off the roadway, ejecting Tootle. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident but suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy in Creve Coeur. The Harley Davidson sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their September meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00. After approval of the minutes from the public tax meeting and regular meeting held August 20th, Comptroller Becky Cunningham will update the Board on the summary of operations and statistics reports for August. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then give the nursing and ancillary service report. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor will give an auxiliary report, the hospital activity calendar an update on legislative issues and those will be followed by the Chief of Staff report. In old business, the Board will address the 2011 strategic planning goals update, the Community Health Needs Assessment and there will be an annual bylaw review. The Board will then address purchases made for the hospital in new business and may vote to go into closed session. The regular meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.
Steve Carvajal, Superintendent of Salem R-80 School district will announce the start of a five-year partnership with the Missouri Foundation for Health to improve children’s health through healthier school environments, including better food choices and increased opportunities for physical activity. The initiative will provide funding and technical assistance directly to the district and help each school tailor its own plan to create a healthy school. Carvajal will be joined at the announcement by local supporters of the Healthy Schools Healthy Communities Initiative, which focuses on children in grades K-8. Salem R-80 will be kicking off its local effort on Tuesday, September 24
th at 3:30 pm followed by a One-Mile Color Run. If you would like to participate in the Color Run, contact the District Wellness Coordinator, Melissa DuBois at 729-3196 by Wednesday. The cost for adults is $10 and $2.00 doe children. The cost of the run includes a T-Shirt. More than 30% of Missouri’s kids are obese or overweight. Low-income communities and schools have the highest obesity rates. Poor health in childhood increases the odds of chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and tooth decay, which leads to more absenteeism and diminished school performance. Research demonstrates that regular physical activity and physical fitness are associated with higher levels of academic performance.
