The Salem Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest is seeking public comment on the proposed Bunker Area Derecho Fuels project. On May 8, 2009, a major storm system moved through the southern portion of Missouri producing thunderstorms, tornados and straight-line wind of up to 90 miles per hour. These winds caused considerable damage, uprooting thousands of trees and causing extensive property damage throughout the area. The storm damaged tress present a significant addition to fuel loading on the ground. All of the timber has cured, and this additional fuel has the potential to change what would ordinarily be a manageable wildfire in to a catastrophic wildfire. The purpose of the Bunker Area Derecho Fuels project is to decrease wild land fire risk to the community of Bunker and surrounding Wild land Urban Interface areas by removing, reducing and/or rearranging hazardous fuels; provide accessibility for safe wild land firefighting and recover at least a fraction of the economic value of the storm damaged timber in the project area. Approximately 22,840 acres of forested areas impacted by the Derecho storm would be treated and are located in Dent, Reynolds and Shannon County. An accident occurred at 9:58 Saturday evening in Crawford County on private property on High Point Road. According to the highway patrol report, the accident was caused by 38-year old Jason McAllister of Cuba losing control of a 2012 Can-Am universal terrain vehicle while turning. Jason McAllister suffered serious injuries and was flown by Arch helicopter to the Mercy Hospital in Creve Couer. Two occupants, 37-year old Adam McAllister of Lake St. Louis and 31-year old Joshua McAllister of Cuba, suffered moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. They were not wearing safety devices at the time of the accident. The Can-Am suffered no damage.
There will be a S.A.F.E. (Salem Advocates For Empowerment) quarterly team meeting on September 19
th from 12:00 (noon) until 1:00 pm at the Southwest Baptist University Salem Campus. Lunch will be served. Sign-ups and an introduction and resource/program update will be also be held at noon. Then at about 12:15, will be the S.A.N.E. Nurse, the Phelps County Regional Medical Center and the Rolla Police Department. There will also be a presentation by Starlyn Reynolds and Deputy Hank Harper. The goals of the meeting are to provide an opportunity to meet and to learn about Dent County programs and to build a working relationship between the agencies This meeting will help to better serve victims of domestic and sexual violence. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at the 2012 Awards Dinner. The banquet will be held on Thursday, November 1st at The Gathering Place of the Grace Community Church located at 600 South Water Street beginning at 6:00 pm. This year the Chamber Board decided to only hold a dinner to recognize and honor award nominees and recipients. Awards will be given in 6 categories: Business of the Year with 0-10 employees, Business of the Year with 11-25 employees, Business of the Year with 26-50 employees, Business of the Year with over 50 employees, Non-Profit Organization of the Year and the Customer Service Award (employee of a Chamber of Commerce member). Businesses, organizations and/or individuals have to be a current chamber member and/or an employee of a chamber business. Criteria and eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main Street or requested from chamber@salemmo.com. Zayne Kyser ran for 147 yards and a touchdown Friday night as the Salem Football Tigers defeated the Thayer Bobcats by the score of 21-6. Austin Rogers also ran for 132 yards for the Tigers as they received touchdowns from Brady Floyd and Jesse Dodd. Salem is now 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in the SCA. They will host the Ava Bears for Homecoming Friday night at 7:00.
The Salem Lady Tiger softball team participated in a rain-shortened make up of the Potosi Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Tigers ran into a hot hitting St. Genevieve team in the first game, losing 16-1. Salem’s second game ended in a tie with Van Buren, 3-3, after the game was called after five innings due to the conditions. The Lady Tigers are now 9-5-1 on the year and will play at Dixon today at 4:30. THIS GAME HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR TODAY!!
Jon Jay doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals regained control of the National League's second wild-card spot with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Adam Wainwright pitched six innings of two run ball while striking out four and walking two for the Cardinals, who split this four-game series and hold a one-game lead over Los Angeles in the playoff race. The Cardinals have the day off today.
Mark Trumbo's three-run home run in the second inning proved to be the difference Sunday as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim edged the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, in the finale of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Tony Abreu smoked a solo home run for the Royals, who have dropped three of their last four. The Royals have the day off.
Kendial Lawrence scored a pair of touchdowns and the Missouri Tigers held off a late charge to defeat the Arizona State Sun Devils, 24-20, at Faurot Field. Lawrence had only 62 yards rushing in the game while quarterback Corbin Berkstresser threw for 198 yards on 21-of-41 passing in his first collegiate start for Missouri (2-1). Mizzou will play at eighth-ranked South Carolina on Saturday.
Sam Bradford had three touchdown passes on 26-of-35 attempts for 310 yards to lead the St. Louis Rams to a 31-28 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Danny Amendola totaled 15 catches for 160 yards and a score while Matthew Mulligan and Brandon Gibson each caught a touchdown pass for the Rams (1-1), who snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Rams will play the Bears on Sunday.
C.J. Spiller found the end zone twice and Buffalo rebounded from a tough season-opener with a 35-17 defeat of Kansas City. Matt Cassel was 23-for-42 for 301 yards with two scores, one interception and one fumble for the Chiefs (0-2), who have given up 75 points in their first two games this season. The Chiefs will play the Saints on Sunday.
The NHL is officially in its third work stoppage in less than 20 years. The seven-year collective bargaining agreement between the sides expired at midnight Saturday. The preseason is set to begin September 23rd and the regular season October 11th. Training camps will not open until agreement on a new CBA is reached.

Funeral services for Carl Hinkle of Salem, age 59, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Memorial Chapel for funeral expenses.
Funeral services for Lori Lee “Loretta” Anderson of Steelville, age 73, will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Butts.
Funeral services for Jim Asher of East End, age 68, will be Wednesday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic Service at 6:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Funeral services for Gilbert Ray Welch of West Monroe, Louisiana and formerly of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Tower Grove Baptist Church in St. Louis. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 at the church. Interment will be Saturday morning at 10:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Tower Grove Baptist Church beautification fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
