The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting this evening beginning at 7:00 pm at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. After the approval of the consent agenda, the Planning and Zoning Board Chairman Sean Curley will report on the their meeting held on September 13^th regarding the reviewed use for the operation of a Day Care Center located at 203 South Hickory Street. Alderman Jim Jackson, Mike Whitley, and Bill Riley will discuss miscellaneous items involving the city along with Alderman Jim McDaniels. McDaniels would also like to discuss the City’s Emergency Procedures and those will be followed by Mayor Gary Brown’s comments. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3109, an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute a lease agreement between the City of Salem and the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission for the leasing of the roadside park on Highway 19 in the City of Salem, will be discussed. The current lease with MoDOT on the roadside park on Highway 19 expires on September 30, 2007. MoDOT is requesting the City sign another 10-year lease with a renewable option. After the approval of bills, the Board will then go into closed session for the discussion of personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.        

This week is Child Passenger Safety Week. Educational efforts during the week focus attention on the importance of child passenger safety and educate the public about legislation for transporting children under 8 that took effect in August 2006. Events include Kids Day this Saturday with safety seat checks. In 2006, 15 children in Missouri under age 8 were killed and 2,014 were injured in traffic crashes. The new booster seat law requires children to be in a booster seat if they are ages 4 through 7 years old, unless: they are at least 80 pounds and they are at least 4’9” tall. The previous law only required children under age 4 to be secured in an approved child safety seat, so many children weren’t being adequately protected. Just a few more years in a booster seat can help prevent serious injury and may even save your child’s life. When used correctly, child safety seats are 71 percent effective in preventing fatalities for infants and 54 percent effective for toddlers. Serious injuries can result from improperly fitted safety belts, particularly for children ages 4 through 7 who are secured only in a regular safety belt during a crash. These injuries are commonly known as “seat belt syndrome,” which are often life threatening or disabling. Booster seats help prevent this syndrome from occurring by raising the child up so the lap and shoulder belt fits them properly. Nathan Cooper threw four touchdown passes and the Salem Tigers turned the ball over five times as the Owensville Dutchman raced past the Tigers Friday night, 36-9. Salem’s lone touchdown came on a Justin Davis 35-yard run and Landie Oliver blocked a punt in the end zone. Salem is now 0-3 and they will travel to Cabool Friday night for an SCA contest.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at home to face Dixon today starting at 4:30.

Chase Daniel threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Missouri Tigers to a 52-24 win over the Western Michigan Broncos in non-conference action from Faurot Field. Daniel completed 27 of his 46 attempts for Missouri (3-0). Martin Rucker hauled in 11 passes for 115 yards, while Jeremy Maclin tallied seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Tony Temple paced the ground game with 16 carries for 96 yards and two scores.

Matt Murton's three-run homer powered a four- run third inning, and Jason Marquis and the Cubs bullpen made that inning stand up as Chicago topped the Cardinals, 4-2, to take three of four from St. Louis. Skip Schumaker, who entered in the eighth as a pinch-hitter, drove in both runs for the Cardinals. Mark Mulder (0-3) lasted only three innings, allowing seven hits and four runs for St. Louis, who have dropped 10 of 11, falling seven games behind the first-place Cubs. The Cards play the Phillies tonight.

Billy Buckner hurled six brilliant innings for his first major league win, and Emil Brown had three hits and drove in a pair of runs as Kansas City avoided a sweep by edging Cleveland, 4-3, at Jacobs Field. Buckner (1-1) allowed just one run on five hits, while walking one and fanning three for the Royals. Mark Teahen and John Buck added an RBI apiece for Kansas City.

Jeff Wilkins' 56-yard try came up just short with time winding down as the St. Louis Rams drop a 17-16 decision to the San Francisco 49'ers. Marc Bulger went 24-of-41 for 368 yards with a touchdown for St. Louis (0-2). Isaac Bruce had eight receptions for 145 yards.

Devin Hester returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown to lead the Chicago Bears past Kansas City, 20-10. Damon Huard completed 19-of-28 passes for 175 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Kansas City (0-2).

Funeral services for Emmit Lay of Bunker, age 84, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Lower Bee Fork Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter.

Funeral services for Irma Irene Cottrell of Florissant, formerly of Davisville, age 80, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery in Davisville, Missouri.

Graveside services for Sherman Roy Roberts of Paris, Tennessee formerly of Salem, age 88 will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mission fund at First Untied Methodist Church in Paris, Tennessee.

Visitation for Lawrence Allen Story, Sr. of Steelville, age 59, will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. There will be no services.

Funeral services for Joyce Darlene Jester of Salem, age 58, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday night. Interment will be in the Berry Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Joyce Darlene Jester Memorial Fund.

Funeral services for Norma E. Wilson of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, age 86, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 9:00. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer Association.

Funeral services for Lois J. Beiersdorf of St. James, age 93, are incomplete at this time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
