The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers after a Planning and Zoning Commission hearing. Under the hearing of persons, Dr. Richard Cole and property manager Dottie Link complained that a woman came to their trailer court and scared a tenant into believing that the place was being condemned. The tenant believed she was from the city and the mayor told them that Rick Raw or Bill Huffman would be the only ones from the city they would be in touch with. Laurie Walker then addressed the board and said that she only talked to a tenant for a moment and never said she represented the city. The mayor told her that he has divided up the city into six areas and Rick Raw is addressing properties in each of those areas that are in violation of city codes. The board approved sending City Clerk Mary Happel and a representative of the employees to the LAGERS meeting in Springfield for approximately $180 per person. The board talked with Mark Diehl and John Paul from Fidelity Cable and they discussed varying audio levels on channels, the audio and video not matching up, pictures freezing up, and fuzziness to the picture. Alderman McDaniels also asked if their fees would be increasing again and Paul explained that it depends on the demands of the suppliers, and he would not guarantee that another rate increase would not happen. The board then talked with Dennis Bennett and Jim Diemer from Ameren UE and Alderman Riley asked about having an office in town and Dennis Bennett said that an office was in town back in 1995 for about four years, and then a pay office was established at the old Forum Video store before it closed. Riley insists that the contract calls for an office and wants the city attorney to review the document. The Board also discussed the gas leaks in town, and Diemer said that an Ameren service personnel was on the scene in under two hours for the 4^th Street Mall gas leak which met Public Service Commission requirements. Their requirements are that a service man must respond to an inside gas leak in under an hour and outside gas leak in under two hours. They also discussed two other leaks that occurred in the last month. The mayor wanted the street department, sewer and water department, and construction crews to receive training on what do in case of a gas leak and Dennis Bennett said that could be arranged. Prior to the regular meeting, the Planning and Zoning Commission elected officers and Shawn Curley was elected chairperson, Jerry Craig was elected Vice-Chairperson, and Keith Inman was elected as Secretary. The commission postponed any decision on the request to allow used car sales at the 4^th Street Mall until they could review the area. There was one letter of objection that was received by the commission. Mayor Brown reported that a number of trees were blown down as a result of the storm Sunday morning that also took down a three-phase line. A number of city residents were without power and city street crews were out cutting up the trees blocking the road on East Franklin and 3^rd Street and Russell. The city will pick up all the limbs and debris from the storm for no charge, and the mayor said that the city will help those residents grind up stumps remaining on their property from trees that were broken and cut. He said that the Missouri Community Betterment judges would be in town today at 8:00 AM, and that the a group of presenters will be at Missouri S&T to work with a student engineering class on projects that need to be done around town. The Mayor also saluted Mary Happel on reaching the First Level of being a Missouri Registered City Clerk. He reminded everyone that the City Wide Yard Sale will be held on October 4^th, that the city wide cleanup week will be held on October 6^th through the 10^th, and that an electronics recycling day will be held October 18^th at the Grand and Third Streets. The board approved setting a hearing date for the petition for annexation by John and Johanna Wegmann at 900 East Rolla Road. After paying the bills, the board went into closed session.

An accident happened on Thursday, September 11^th at 9:59 in the morning at the intersection of Highway 19 and Roosevelt. According to the Salem Police report, a white 1999 Olds 88 driven by Fern Knueven of Salem was crossing Highway 19 on Roosevelt Avenue traveling east and pulled into the path of a white 1985 GMC 3500 driven by Michael Watson and owned by Roberts Judson Lumber, both of Salem, that was traveling north on Highway 19. 20-year old Watson suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Olds sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem. The GMC also sustained extensive damage.

An accident happened Saturday at 9:54 at the intersection of Highway 32 and Askins. According to the Salem Police report, a black 1988 Chevy C-1500 driven by 69-year old James Privett of Salem, was westbound in the center turn lane on Highway 32; and a silver 2006 Mazda driven by 46-year old Cynthia Welch of Salem was in the eastbound lane of Highway 32. The Chevy turned on a yield green and collided with the Mazda. Privett and Welch both suffered injuries. The Chevy and the Mazda both sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

The Mountain Grove Panthers scored once each quarter and converted on two of four two-point conversions to beat the Salem Freshmen Tigers 28-0. Salem moved the ball real well, but had way too many turnovers for the offense to get into the end zone. Salem will play next week at home against St. James at 5:00.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers game with Thayer was cancelled due yesterday to wet grounds. The Lady Tigers will host Bourbon today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Field.

The Cardinals were off yesterday and face Cincinnati tonight at 5:50 on KSMO Radio.

Kyle Davies shut down the Mariners over eight scoreless innings and Joakim Soria finished off the shutout as the Royals came away with a 3-0 win over the Mariners in the opener of a four-game set. Davies (7-7) was masterful in allowing just four hits without walking a batter and fanning eight for the Royals, who have won four in a row. Soria picked up his 38th save of the season, while Mark Teahen finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for Kansas City.This afternoon, Seattle's Brandon Morrow (2-3) will square off against KC's Brandon Duckworth (2-1).

The Milwaukee Brewers have fired manager Ned Yost and named Dale Sveum interim manager for the final two weeks of the season. The Brewers are 83-67 and tied for the top spot in the National League wild card race with Philadelphia. Yost was in his sixth year as Brewers skipper and was signed through the 2009 campaign. He posted a record of 457-502 and, after last season's 83-79 mark, had the Brewers in position to finish above .500 in consecutive years for the first time since 1991 and '92. Bench coach Ted Simmons has also been reassigned to an advisory role.
