Digital Parenting: is there an app for that? A whirlwind tour of the digital world for parents and adults will be held on Tuesday, September 16th at the Salem Upper Elementary from 6:30 to 7:30 pm and due to the nature of the material, this session is not appropriate for children. This session is designed to provide an overview of the digital environment for parents and community members. Topics to be covered include types of apps parents should be aware of, basic digital safety, cyber bullying, over sharing, and online predators. If you have young children, you should make every effort to attend this gathering!!

Roadwork continues in Dent County. Roadway resurfacing continues on Highway 19 between Highway 32 and Route KK in Shannon County. One lane is open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area. Repaving continues on Highway 72 from the Highway 32-72 junction in Salem to Route F. This project is scheduled for completion in November. Pavement and drainage improvements are underway on Route J between Highway 72 and Highway 32. The road is closed in areas between Highway 32 and 3rd Street during the work. Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route around the work area. The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Wednesday, September 3rd at 12:15 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone stole a Walmart prepaid card and spent $13.58 at various locations. On Thursday, September 4th at 6:30 in the morning, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store on South Macarthur in reference to theft of fuel. That investigation revealed the passenger of a blue Pontiac G4 pumped $10 in fuel and left without paying. He was later identified as a 26-year old Salem male and was arrested for stealing, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Friday, September 5th at 10:20 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 40-year old Salem male for stealing and trespassing. He was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Saturday, September 6th at 8:15 in the morning, an officer responded to Phil-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 43-year old Salem male for stealing a bottle of vodka valued at $7.99. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Sunday, September 7th at 3:44 in the early morning, an officer located a 39-year old Salem female in the 200 block of South Pershing who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County.  She was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Anyone with any info regarding the theft report, which is still under investigation, is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main will be the place of the Salem Summer Art Institute, sponsored by the Salem Area Arts Council. The final session will be held this Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:30. There will be an Art Party where you can enjoy refreshments, eat snacks and discover your creativity. Everyone will create an Owl painting to take home and supplies will be provided. The program is suitable for adults and cost $25. For more info, call 729-0029 or 247-8568.

The Salem Tigers turned the ball over five times and missed two extra points as they fell to Thayer Friday night, 14-12. Zayne Kyser scored a touchdown and rushed for 119 yards on 25 carries, but was stopped on a 4th and inches at the goal line in the second half. Paul McClain also scored for Salem on a pass from Dylan Wisdom. The Salem defense held Thayer to 163 yards for the entire game, and only 17 yards in the whole second half. The Tigers are now 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the SCA. They will be at home to face Ava this Friday night.

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with Sunday's 4-1 victory. The Cardinals still lead the NL Central by 3 1/2 games over the Pirates and have today off before starting a three-game series against the third-place Brewers.

Daniel Nava slugged the go-ahead grand slam and the Boston Red Sox walked away with an 8-4 result against the Kansas City Royals. Eric Hosmer slammed a three-run shot for the Royals, who fell 1 1/2 games behind AL Central leader Detroit. The Royals will start a series with the Chicago White Sox tonight.

Maty Mauk threw for 144 yards and four touchdowns on 14-of-24 efficiency as No. 20 Missouri claimed a 38-10 decision over UCF in Saturday's inter-conference clash. Bud Sasser and Jimmie Hunt each posted a pair of TD receptions for the Tigers (3-0), who have scored at least 30 points in each of their wins this season. Missouri will host Indiana on Saturday.

Greg Zuerlein kicked a 38-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining to lift the injury-riddled St. Louis Rams to a 19-17 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. The Rams will host the Cowboys on Sunday.

The St. Louis Rams have signed defensive end Robert Quinn to a four-year contract extension through the 2019 season. Quinn tallied a franchise record 19 sacks last season and was an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection.

Alex Smith did all he could to keep the injury-riddled Kansas City defense off the field in the second half, but Peyton Manning tossed three touchdown passes in the first 30 minutes and Denver held off the Chiefs, 24-17, on Sunday. The Chiefs play the Dolphins on Sunday.

Visitation for Joseph Ventimiglia of Vichy, age 84, will be held today at 12:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla with a private funeral service to follow.

Funeral services for Ethel G. Cooley of Newburg, age 82, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Rolla Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be at the Ozark Memorial Garden Cemetery in Rolla.

Graveside services for Hazel Jean Kozlowski of Daingerfield, Texas, age 84, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville.

Funeral services for Josephine Gruber Smith of St. Louis, formerly of St. James, age 96, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the St. James Episcopal Church in St. James. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 that morning until service time. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Memorial services for Shirley Jean Scowden of Steelville, age 81, will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
