The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damages, theft and disorderly conduct. On Saturday evening, September 4th at 10:20, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged door handles and scraped the paint on a maroon 2003 Dodge truck that was parked at a residence in the 100 block of North Pershing Street. On Monday, September 6th at 3:15 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a 25-year old male of Licking took a wedding ring valued at $1,600.00 from a residence in the 700 block of William, then pawned it locally. Later that night at 6:21, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Third Street in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown burned two “Build-A-Bears” valued at $100.00 while the resident was gone. On Saturday, September 7th at 6:57 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of North Pershing Street in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged a maroon 2003 Dodge truck with rocks. The value of the damage to the truck is approximately $1107.17. Later on that night at 11:42, an officer was sent to the Walnut Bowl Motel parking lot in reference to a fight in progress. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 20-year old male of Salem for assault, and a 24-year old male of Salem for assault and violation of an order of protection. They were issued a summons to appear in court and were released. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, September 7th. After approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, the bills were discussed and approved. There was a discussion of the 2010 budget and categories will have to be adjusted to reflect a zero in the budget, which will be done later in the year before the new budget goes into effect. After a discussion was held on the 2011 budget, there was a calendar review. There were a total of 29 calls made in the month of August and 253 calls year-to-date. In new business, the board reviewed and discussed items from the directors training including the annual financial audit, district medical officer, public relations and document audits. The Board then discussed with Chief Brad Nash the yearly evaluation and the Board will be presented with the evaluation forms at the next meeting. Chief Nash reported that the guttering project has been completed and that the garage door replacements are scheduled for this month. The Board then set the date for the next scheduled meeting for October 5th @ 6:00 PM at the Dent County Fire Protection District building. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Dent County Farm Bureau and the Dent County Cattleman are sponsoring a public meeting about the reintroduction of Elk in Missouri and the concerns among area landowners. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 21st at the Salem City Hall beginning at 7:00 pm. Mr. Tom Draper, Deputy Director Missouri Conservation Commission; Mr. Dan Cassidy, Chief Administrative Officer Missouri Farm Bureau; Mr. Jeff Windett, Executive Vice-President Missouri Cattleman Association; and Ed Carmack, representing the Rocky Mountain Elk Association will be the speakers and each will have 15 minutes for their presentations. Following the four speakers there will be a question and comment period with no more than five minutes per individual for comments. The meeting will adjourn at 9:00. 

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Auxiliary will host a cancer awareness dinner on Monday at 6:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church called the “Colors for a Cure.” Tickets are $10 each and can be bought at the hospital or at the Edward Jones office. Call 729-6626 for more information.

Leah Whelan and Amber Kearbey drove in five runs each and four other girls drove in three runs each as Salem erupted for 19 first inning runs and added 11 more in the second inning to crush Bourbon, 30-2 in high school softball play. Salem is now 4-5 on the year and will host Steelville on Thursday at 4:30.

The Salem Lady Varsity Volleyball Tiger beat West Plains Monday night in three games. Salem won the first game 25-23, lost the second game 25-13, and won the third game 25-19. The JV lost in two straight games: 25-11 and 25-19. The Lady Tigers will be at Licking on Thursday.

Randy Wells pitched eight stellar innings and helped his own cause with two runs batted in to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 7-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the middle installment of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (18-11) failed in his bid to become the National League's first 19-game winner this season and suffered the loss after he allowed five runs on 12 hits with eight strikeouts in eight frames. St. Louis has lost six of its last eight games overall and remained seven games behind the Cincinnati Reds, who lead the NL Central. The Cards and Cubs play the finale of their three-game set tonight at 6:55 on KSMO.

Wilson Betemit hit a two-run homer and drove in a total of four runs, as the Kansas City Royals dominated the Oakland Athletics, 11-3, in the second test of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Mike Aviles hit a three-run homer and scored three runs for the Royals, who had lost six of seven coming in. Kila Ka'aihue belted a two-run homer and knocked in a total of three runs. Zack Greinke (9-12) was the beneficiary of the run support, giving up three runs on six hits over seven innings. The 2009 AL Cy Young Award recipient won for the first time since August 17. The Royals and A's play again tonight.

On Monday, the Royals sent utility player Willie Bloomquist to the Cincinnati Reds for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Kansas City Royals catcher Brayan Pena has been named the Player of the Week for the American League for the period ending September 12.

The Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday announced that Denny Thum has stepped down as team president. Thum was with the organization for 36 years. The move is effective immediately. The St. Louis native began his longtime tenure with the Chiefs as a staff accountant in 1974. Thum worked his way up the ladder and was promoted to president in May of 2009. The Chiefs also announced that chairman Clark Hunt has become the CEO of the club. Hunt said that he does not have immediate plans to fill the president position and no outside search will take place.

Atlanta's Chipper Jones and St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols are among the six finalists for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award. The award is named for the founding executive director of the MLB Players Association and is bestowed upon the player "whose on-field and off-field performance most inspires others to higher levels of achievement by displaying as much passion to give back to others as he shows between the lines on the baseball diamond." Pujols, who won the Marvin Miller Award in 2006, and his wife Deidre are the founders of the Pujols Family Foundation, which is dedicated to the love, care and development of people with Down Syndrome and their families. Albert hosts an annual charity golf tournament as well as a live auction to raise money for the foundation.

Funeral services for Ernest Everette Goforth of Salem, age 82, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Robert N. Lincoln of Cuba, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Heartland Hospice.

Memorial services for Beulah M. Mead of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday, September 24 at 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Dupont, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the Columbus Grove, Ohio, Eastern Star Chapter.
