The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6660 and 6665 and ditch work would be done on Dent County Road 4122. Purcell also said that a crew would be installing a driveway pipe on Dent County Road 5080 and removing a downed tree from Dent County Road 5110. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2150, 2405, 4437, 6120 and 6140. Larson also said that signs would be put up on Dent County Roads 3195 and 6680 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5320. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Public Housing Advisory Authority Meeting in St. James last Thursday afternoon and at that meeting it was reported that Dent County had 114 HUD approved rentals that totaled $360,817 in rent. Skiles read a letter from the Missouri Association of Commissioners concerning the eight billion dollars in access money that is available to counties for highway and bridge improvements. The letter stated that the Federal Highway Administration wants to make that money unavailable to counties and the letter was asking county commissioners to write a letter to their local representatives and senators opposing this idea. Skiles also stated that Dent Counties Sales Tax Revenue for the month of September was down 15% from September of last year. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she signed off on two more FEMA Project worksheets totaling $28,419 bringing the total of all FEMA Project worksheets to $100,298. Curley said the county has received about half of that so far in reimbursement from FEMA. Mike Friend came by the meeting with concerns about washouts on Dent Count Road 2100. Commissioner Larson said he would go out and look at the road and talk with Friend about the best possible solution to repair the road. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, Dent County Health Department and Salem Schools combined efforts to bring a memorable lesson to students from Salem High and Middle Schools on Tuesday, September 8. An estimated 800 students heard the personal stories of Chad Burton and Penny Lorenz, members of ThinkFirst, and survivors of brain and spinal cord injuries. ThinkFirst is an award-winning trauma prevention program, established in 1980 to prevent traumatic injuries through the education of individuals, community leaders and the creators of public policy. The dynamic speakers engaged their audience and emphasized these specific lifesaving behaviors: always wear your safety belt; never drive aggressively, drowsy or distracted; always check water depth; and always wear a helmet. Mr. Burton and Ms. Lorenz offered compelling testimony, as survivors of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. They explained  how their injuries occurred, life before and after their injuries, and talked about what it's like to be young and live with a disability. The speakers emphasized that teens should always think first to protect their bodies.  They explained that those who don't could be faced with permanent disabilities, family challenges, catastrophic medical bills and even death.  These survivors offered sobering yet motivational messages that urged everyone to make responsible choices every day. Contractor crews are scheduled to begin a surface-leveling project in Iron and Reynolds Counties today. Crews will be working from the intersection of Higwhay 72 and Route TT in Reynolds County, to the intersection of Highway 32 and Route KK near Bixby in Iron County. Weather permitting crews will be working on the roadway from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The project encompasses 18.545 miles of Routes KK and TT near Reynolds, and calls for surface leveling to extend the life of the existing pavement. This project does involve some lane reduction and possibly closure with flagmen; and while working, crews will be on or near the roadway. Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling through the area. With summer dwindling down and autumn around the corner, the anticipation of bow season is on the rise and it starts today!. White tail hunting is a fun and exciting time of year however; there are dangers, especially while hunting in a tree stand. Deer stand injuries are potentially some of the more serious outdoor injuries that occur. Possible reasons for deer stand injuries may include, but are not limited to: a deer stand not well made, a stand not secured to the tree properly, a stand placed too high or a hunter who does not wear a safety harness. Another point to consider is the deer stand height. The chance of death or serious injury increases if the hunter falls from more than 20 feet. Finally, hunters should always enter the woods prepared. Carry a form of communication such as a walky-talky, a whistle, even a GPS personal tracker device or with a partner and have a plan in the event of an emergency. Think safety.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped a 13-8 decision to Thayer yesterday and there was no JV game. The Lady Tigers are 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the SCA. The girls will be at Bourbon today starting at 4:30.

The Salem 9^th grade football team lost 28-0 to Mountain Grove and only one half was played. Mountain Grove had suffered some injuries prior to the game so only one half was played.

Julio Lugo tripled in two runs and scored the go-ahead tally on an Albert Pujols sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, as the Cardinals beat the Florida Marlins, 11-6, to open a three-game series. Colby Rasmus had three hits, including an insurance three-run homer in the eighth inning, and Matt Holliday drove in three runs for St. Louis, which snapped a three-game skid and reduced its magic number to 10 for clinching the National League Central Division title. Ryan Ludwick added a two-run single and Skip Schumaker finished with three hits and three runs scored in the victory. Todd Wellemeyer started for the Cardinals and allowed nine hits and six runs over four innings. Blake Hawksworth (4-0) yielded a hit over 1 1/3 scoreless frames to get the win.

The Kansas City Royals were off yesterday and will be in Detroit tonight to face the Tigers to open a three game set.

Kansas City Royals first baseman Billy Butler has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending September 13. In seven games last week, Butler hit .419 (13-for-31) with two home runs and an MLB-best 12 runs batted in. He also had an AL-best 24 total bases and tied for the major league lead with five doubles.

Funeral services for Mary Ann Norris of Salem, age 67, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Funeral services for William “Bill” L. Dalton of Salem, age 91, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church.
