Intercounty Electric reports that about 6,000 people were without power yesterday after two storm surges came through the area. The main causes of outages were due to the strong winds causing debris as well as falling trees and limbs that damaged lines and poles. High water is another source of damage and it also hindered repair efforts. Widespread damage was reported in the Rolla, Salem, Darien and Edgar Springs areas. There are scattered outages throughout the system as well. To add to the problem, phone service between Rolla and Edgar Springs was damaged. Intercounty crews will continue working to restore electric and they ask all members to stay clear of downed or low hanging power lines. Intercounty Electric members need to call them at 1-866-621-3679 to report problems.

The storm caused a number of creeks and streams to flood and caused downed trees and power outages in the city. A tree blocked Franklin Street between Pershing and Highway 19 yesterday morning and the corner of 3rd and Martin was also impassable Sunday morning. The city reminds those who have limbs down to please break them up and place them at the edge of your property. Since the damage is widespread, it may take some time to collect all the limbs and debris.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting at 7:00 tonight at the city hall council chambers. Prior to the meeting will be the hearing of the Planning and Zoning Commission for the purpose of organizing and electing officers, and to hear a request for a conditional use permit to sell used vehicles at the 4th Street Mall. In the regular meeting, the board will hear from Dr. Richard Cole and Dottie Link about Laurie Walker coming to their trailer park on East Center and leading the renters to believe she was a city employee. Laurie Walker will then follow up on the petition she gave to the city at the last meeting. After the consent agenda, the board will take care of unfinished business including City Clerk Mary Happel attending the LAGERS annual meeting, a discussion with Fidelity Cable about rates and service, and a discussion with Ameren UE about service and a local office. The board will hear from City Engineer Bill Huffman on the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting held prior to the regular meeting. Alderman Bill Riley wants to discuss hiring in the construction department and miscellaneous items; Alderman Jim McDainels wants to address signs and excess wire on utility poles as well as miscellaneous items, and Aldermen Jim Jackson and Kenneth Nash will discuss miscellaneous items. Mayor Gary Brown will follow with his comments. The board will then hear a petition for annexation from John and Johanna Wegmann at 900 East Rolla Road. This property was supposed to have been annexed several years ago, but the legal description was wrong so the property was never annexed. After the approval of bills, the board will go into closed session. The hearing and the meeting are both open to the public.

An accident happened at 7:30 Thursday evening in Jasper County on the Flying J parking lot. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Kenworth driven by 46-year old Michael Williams of Star City, Arkansas attempted a right turn in the Flying J parking lot, and the trailer of the Kenworth struck the cab of a parked 2008 Volvo. 46-year old Manual Gearhart of Salem was working on the engine of the Volvo when the Kenworth struck the hood, causing Gearhart to be pushed into the windshield of the Volvo. Gearhart suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Joplin. The Kenworth was driven from the scene. The Volvo was left at the scene.
