The Current River Cobra Rally will be held tonight starting at 6:30 in downtown Salem followed by a cruise on Saturday morning starting from the Dent County Fire Station. The Mid-America Cobra Club of Greater Kansas City Area, the Gateway Cobra Club, the Current River Cruisers and the Downtown Salem Business Organization organize the Current River Cobra Rally. Free live music with Rich Vickers and the TLC Band and the car show will be held tonight, while low cost concessions will be available downtown. The car show winner will be the car that can raise the most money in donations. Buckets will be in front of all the cars for the donations. The donations collected will then be split with the affiliated car clubs with one-half of the proceeds being awarded to the Salem High School Marching Band. Then on Saturday morning at 8:30 at the Dent County Fire Station, follow the cars on a cruise following the scenic routes through the Current River and the Black River Scenic Hills and valleys. The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5410, 5440 and 6470, while grading would be done and ditch work will be performed on Dent County Road 6190. Purcell also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5070. Purcell went on to say that repair work is being done on an air release for the tailgate on Dent County Truck 111, repair work is being done on the emergency backup flasher on the backhoe, and that repair work is being done on the asphalt roller on the asphalt machine. Purcell did state that he requested from the MRPC a traffic counter for a traffic count on Dent County Road 6180, which is chip and sealed. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 3160, 4405, 5300, 5320, 5335 and 6140; while brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4050 and 4055. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that last Thursday, City Administrator Clayton Lucas came by and informed the county that the City of Salem had entered into a contract with the MRPC to develop a strategic plan for the city and also the county. He asked the commissioners to attend and participate in a series of meetings that were going to be held the next few months. Skiles said that the MRPC sent out a press release that indicated that the City of Salem AND the Dent County Commissioners were sponsoring this event. Skiles wanted to let the public know that the commissioners did not even discuss sponsoring the meetings and did not even know about them until Lucas came into their office. Skiles did report that Preston Kramer from MoDOT stated that speed studies and a traffic count would be done on Route HH in the near future. Kramer said that the last count MoDOT has shows that 1,025 vehicles a day use that road. This all came out of a discussion at the last meeting with Kramer and Bonnie Prigge from the MRPC who came in to discuss the transportation needs in Dent County. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriffs Department released a report. On Tuesday, September 11th at 7:57 in the morning, deputies responded to the 500 block of County Road 2060 about a stolen air conditioner. The missing air conditioner is described as a "Goodman" GSC130301 valued at $800.00. The air conditioner was entered into the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) as stolen. Anyone having information regarding the theft is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 729-3241.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at the 2012 Awards Dinner. The banquet will be held on Thursday, November 1st at The Gathering Place of the Grace Community Church located at 600 South Water Street beginning at 6:00 pm. This year the Chamber Board decided to only hold a dinner to recognize and honor award nominees and recipients. Awards will be given in 6 categories: Business of the Year with 0-10 employees, Business of the Year with 11-25 employees, Business of the Year with 26-50 employees, Business of the Year with over 50 employees, Non-Profit Organization of the Year and the Customer Service Award (employee of a Chamber of Commerce member). Businesses, organizations and/or individuals have to be a current chamber member and/or an employee of a chamber business. Criteria and eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main Street or requested from chamber@salemmo.com. Kaytlyn Wells went 2 for 4 and drove in five runs as the Salem Lady Softball Tigers defeated the Steelville Lady Cardinals, 11-5. Kristin Hemken 3-3 with two RBI and she scored four times. Savannah Hanning also had two hits and scored three times for the Lady Tigers who improve to 9-3 on the year. Reese Weber went 2-4 for Steelville with a home run and two RBI. Salem will travel to Waynesville today at 4:30 and will also participate in the Potosi Tournament this weekend that was rained out last Saturday.
The Salem Lady Tiger volleyball team lost to Licking in two sets, 25-14 and 25-10, on Thursday. The JV also lost in two sets, 25-18 and 25-14. The Lady Tigers will next play on Tuesday, as they will host Mountain Grove.
The Salem Tiger football team will be on the road tonight to take on Thayer in SCA action. Salem is 3-0 on the year and you’ll be able to hear the action on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.
Allen Craig hit a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals opened a crucial four-game series with a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lance Lynn allowed one run on five hits over six innings to earn the win while walking two and striking out seven. The Cards and Dodgers will play again tonight and you’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO following the Salem game.
Denard Span's double in the bottom of the 10th inning brought home the winning run for the Twins, as Minnesota salvaged the final game of a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals, winning 4-3. Salvador Perez had a two run single and Billy Butler had an RBI double for the Royals. Luis Mendoza pitched effectively and allowed just a single run over six innings. The Royals start a series with the Angels tonight.
The Missouri Tiger football team will look to bounce back from their first loss of the year as they will host Arizona State in a non-conference match-up on Saturday. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio at 5:00.
The Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams will both be looking for their first win of the season on Sunday. The Chiefs will be in Buffalo to face the Bills at noon and the Rams will host the Washington Redskins at 3:05.

Funeral services for William Guy Fowler of Fenton, age 78, will be Sunday at 2:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitations will be Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Jay B. Smith Funeral Home in Fenton and Sunday from 12:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.
Funeral services for Carl Hinkle of Salem, age 59, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Memorial Chapel for funeral expenses.
Funeral services for Lori Lee “Loretta” Anderson of Steelville, age 73, will be held Monday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Butts.
Funeral services for Jim Asher of East End, age 68, will be Wednesday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic Service at 6:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Funeral services for Bonita Sue Westphal of Newburg, age 72, are incomplete at this time. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
A Private Memorial service for Mary Lou Haase of Salem, age 77, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
