The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 4180, 5160, 5170, 6010, 6220 and 6580; and brush is going to be cut on Dent County Road 6370 and 6670. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done this week on Dent County Road 2540, 2550, 3080, 3090 and 4380. He also reported that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 3290, 3300, 4290 and 4300. Larson stated that a truck would be going to Cuba to get cold mix to repair chip and seal roads this week. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended an MRPC meeting last week and the board approved a contract with Rogers and Associates to design and build an addition for the MRPC Conference room and offices. He said that he would be attending a Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation meeting at the MRPC at 11:30. Skiles also reported that the sales tax revenues received in September were $700 over last September’s amount, and that sales tax revenues are still up in 2010. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that October 6
th would be the last day to register to vote for the general election. She also said that absentee voting is set to begin on September 21
st. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting at the courthouse is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 6:48 Monday morning in Dent County on Highway 72 about a mile north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 70-year old Margaret Bay of Salem was driving a 2009 Chevy Impala and was attempting to make a left hand turn into the northbound lane of Highway 72. At that time, a 1996 Dodge Avenger driven by 24-year-old Elizabeth Hawkins of Jerome, was traveling northbound on 72. The Chevy struck the Dodge in the front. Bay suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Salem EMs to Salem Memorial District Hospital. Hawkins suffered moderate injuries and was transported by air Evac to St Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur. It is unknown whether Bay was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident, while Hawkins was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevy and Dodge sustained extensive damage and both vehicles were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
The Salem Park Board will conduct a meeting tonight at the Salem Freedom Activity Center beginning at 6:30 pm. After a report from Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash, there will be the election of officers. The Board will discuss the swimming pool rate changes and pool parties. The Board will then discuss the 2010 youth baseball and softball league fields, the concession stand, the batting cages and the team selection. The soccer season will then be addressed regarding signups, season dates and the grant status and work status for the fields. The meeting of the Salem Park Board is open to the public.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has directed the Literacy component of Adult Education and Literacy Program for the Rolla area, which includes Phelps, Dent, Maries and Crawford counties to reorganize the formerly active Literacy Councils. Volunteer tutors are needed in the program, according to Literacy Coordinator Shirley Hobson and also needed are support groups. The plan at this point is to start a small group for each area served. Various person from the areas have agreed to be a part of this and if anyone is interested in serving on a council or training to become a tutor, please call Shirley Hobson at (573) 458-0101 EXT. 15151.

Samantha Parker went 5-5 for the game and drove in five runs including three on a triple in the nine-run 6th inning as the Salem Lady Softball came back to beat Thayer, 12-10. Amber Kearbey went 2-5 with two RBI as Salem banged out 14 hits and left 14 on base. They are now 3-5 and will host Bourbon today at 4:30. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers went 1-4-1 in the West Plains Tournament on Saturday. Salem lost to Summersville twice, Fayetteville, and Rogersville, tied Cabool and beat Batesville.
Salem 8th Grade Football Tigers beat the Rolla Bulldogs Monday night 8-0 in a makeup game from Thursday. Tyus Leslie caught a 9-yard TD pass from Nate Stallings with 5 seconds to go in the first half. Justin Appleberry ran in the two-point conversion. The 7th graders will be playing at Houston at 5:30 on Thursday.
Jeff Samardzija, making his third career start, pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and singled in a run, helping the Cubs to a 5-1 win over St. Louis, sending the Cardinals further behind in the NL Central. Jaime Garcia (13-8) lost his second straight start after giving up seven hits and four runs over six frames. The Cardinals went 1-for-8 with men in scoring position. The Cards and Cubs play again tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
Jack Cust clubbed his 100th career homer and Bobby Cramer tossed 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory as the Oakland Athletics took a 3-1 decision over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Mike Aviles went 3-for-4 with a homer for the Royals. Wilson Betemit added a pair of hits in defeat. Luke Hochevar (5-5), worked five innings, yielding two unearned runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The Royals and A’s play again tonight.
Earlier on Monday, the Royals sent utility player Willie Bloomquist to the Cincinnati Reds for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Royals and A's play again tonight.
Rookie Dexter McCluster returned a punt 94 yards for a touchdown and Kansas City used a last-minute defensive stand to thwart a San Diego drive and held on for a season-opening 21-14 win at a renovated Arrowhead Stadium. Jamaal Charles broke off a 56-yard touchdown run for the Chiefs (1-0), who snapped a five-game skid against the Chargers.

Graveside services for Clarice N. Gray of Salem, age 86, will be held today at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Memorial services for Beulah M. Mead of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday, September 24 at 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Dupont, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the Columbus Grove, Ohio, Eastern Star Chapter.
Funeral services for Ernest Everette Goforth of Salem, age 82, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Baptist Church.
