The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of August. During the month, they wrote 17 traffic tickets, eight warning tickets, two equipment repair orders and served 16 summons to appear in court. The Salem Police Department investigated 11 accidents, one assault, and five reports of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 16 reports of stealing, seven reports of property damage, one report of tampering, three burglaries, five reports of disorderly conduct, one report of harassment, one report of sexual misconduct, and two reports of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated one report of possession of synthetic drugs and one report of possession of drugs hallucinogen. The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation in August. The police received 1,805 calls for service during the month, handled 95 walk-ins to the station and redirected 78 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent eight hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The calls in August included 14 calls for escorts, five 9-1-1 calls, five intoxicated driver investigation calls, one call for a suspicious person or vehicle, three calls for peace disturbances, 15 ambulance assist calls, six calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, seven domestic dispute calls, five calls for intoxicated pedestrians, one call for a prowler, one fire call and four wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 10,201 miles during the month of August. The Salem Police Department arrested 13 males and 3 females during the month of August.

The Doe Run Company’s Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD) and Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) helped the Viburnum community celebrate the Tour of Missouri and win a Missouri Farm Bureau Tour of Missouri Spirit Award. The Missouri Spirit Award, sponsored by Missouri Farm Bureau, recognizes one community along each stage for their participation in the Tour of Missouri, a professional bicycle race that takes place over six days, starting in St. Louis and ending in Kansas City. Award winners receive community grants and are eligible for commemorative tour memorabilia. The race traveled through Viburnum around 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 9^th. To help greet cyclists as they rode through the area, Doe Run installed two tall posts that displayed a massive welcome banner above the route. The banner read, “Doe Run Company and Viburnum community welcomes the Tour of Missouri – 2009 Bike Race.” In addition, Doe Run purchased American flags and handed them out to the hundreds of students and community members showing their spirit along the route; purchased and gave away two Schwinn bicycles and helmets; handed out free water bottles; and prepared and sold for 50 cents each hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and soft drinks, raising $440 to be used to help pay for a new marquee sign for Viburnum High School.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, the commanding officer of Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the results of a DWI saturation patrol conducted in Dent County. The enforcement operation was conducted from 4:00 p.m. until midnight on Sunday, September 6^th.  During the operation, troopers were assigned to patrol those highways where in the past a higher number of traffic crashes and arrests had occurred involving alcohol or drug-impaired drivers. During the enforcement operation, troopers stopped 63 vehicles, and issued 19 citations and 66 warnings. There were two DWI violations, 10 violations for failure to wear a seat belt, two driver’s license violations, and four violations for no proof of insurance and one non-moving violation.

An accident happened in Dent County Sunday afternoon at 5:25 on Dent County Road 3150 about six miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 17-year old Adam Martin of Salem lost control of a 2006 Honda ATV as he driving it westbound and was ejected from the ATV. Martin suffered minor injuries and was taken by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Honda ATV sustained no damage and was removed from the scene by the owner.

Andrew Kissir scored four touchdowns and raced for 218 yards as the Salem Tigers registered their second straight shutout beating Cabool 28-0. Salem’s defense has not allowed a touchdown all year. Ty Floyd added 80 yards on the ground for Salem who improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-1 in the SCA. They will be at Ava Friday night in another SCA contest.

In 8^th grade football lat Thursday, the Rolla Bulldogs beat the Salem Tigers, 21-8. Chris Mackley had the only touchdown for Salem with Christian Howard getting the 2-point conversion. The 7^th and 8^th grade will play Thursday at home against Houston.

The Lady Softball Tigers will be at Thayer today starting at 4:30, while the Lady Volleyball Tigers will be hosting West Plains starting at 6:00.

Derrick Washington's one-yard fourth quarter touchdown run gave Missouri its first and only lead of the game as the 25th-ranked Tigers completed a 27-20 comeback win versus the Bowling Green Falcons Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Missouri (2-0) trailed by as many as 13 points against the Falcons, but the Tigers scored the final 21 points of the game. Bowling Green (1-1) had built a 20-6 lead early in the third quarter. Danario Alexander had seven catches for 56 yards and Wes Kemp finished with 38 yards on two receptions. Missouri will host Furman next Saturday.

Adam LaRoche went 2-for-5 with a solo homer, three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Javier Vazquez tossed his 25th career complete game, as the Atlanta Braves dominated the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-2, to sweep a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Chris Carpenter (16-4) got rocked in six frames, giving up seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks to take the loss for the NL Central-leading Cardinals. The Cards face the Florida Marlins tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Kyle Davies tossed six innings of one-hit ball, and Kansas City took the rubber match of a three-game series from Cleveland, 7-0. John Buck connected for a home run and RBI double for the Royals, who had a five-game win streak broken on Saturday. Davies (8-9) won his fourth straight start and fifth in the last six outings, walking six with three strikeouts. Roman Colon tossed two innings of relief and Carlos Rosa one.

Matt Hasselbeck overcame some early turnovers to throw for three touchdowns, as the Seattle Seahawks defeated the St. Louis Rams, 28-0. Marc Bulger struggled under center, throwing for 191 yards on 17-of-36 efficiency for St. Louis (0-1).

Joe Flacco threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Mark Clayton with 2:06 to play, and Willis McGahee added his second TD of the day to sew up the Baltimore Ravens' 38-24 win over the feisty Kansas City Chiefs in the regular season opener for both teams from M&T Bank Stadium. Brodie Croyle finished 16-of-24 passing for 177 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the running game led by Larry Johnson's 20 yards on 11 carries generated a mere 29 yards.

Funeral services for Bradley J. Berry of Salem, age 48, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Berry Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Graveside services for Kenneth Dale Jones of Rolla, age 70, will be held today at 2:00 at the Rolla City Cemetery with Full Military Honors. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Mary Ann Norris of Salem, age 67, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Blackwell Cemetery.
