The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6670, 5170, 5630 and 5650, while a crew would finish clearing a big oak tree that went down on county road 5630. Purcell went on to say that brush would be cut on county road 5480 and materials would be added to county roads 5515, 6670 and 5680. He also said that a man would be screening brown rock at the Road and Bridge Department. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5300, 3020 and 3030, while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 2570. Larson went on to say that brush would be cut on county road 2200 and that the bridge work on county road 3210 was progressing nicely. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Meramec Community Enhancement Committee meeting on Tuesday. He said the Committee receives funds for home renovations and they are currently looking for contractors. All contractors must be pre-approved and those interested should contact Chuck Cantrell at 573-265-2993. Skiles went on to say that he would be attending a Public Housing Authority Board meeting Thursday afternoon, plus MRPC External Relations Committee meeting and MRPC Board meeting later in the day. Deputy Clerk Crystal Pilkington had nothing to report. Commissioner Purcell reminded motorists that re-surfacing is taking place on Highway 19 South and Highway 72 and motorists need to use extreme caution. The Commissioners voted to go in to closed session to discuss contracts. The contract between the Dent County Collector and the City of Salem was discussed, but no decision was made. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Missouri Mines State Historic Site will host an open house on Saturday, Sept. 13. The event will include exhibits, presentations and free museum admission. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site’s museum contains exhibits on Missouri geology and mineral resources, a fantastic mineral collection and pieces of restored underground mining equipment. Admission to the site and its mining and mineral museum in Park Hills will be free during the open house. Industrialized lead mining began in Missouri’s Old Lead Belt in 1864, as the Civil War was coming to a close. The open house celebrates 150 years of mining in the Southeast Missouri Lead District. Retired Lead Belt miners, millmen and other lead-company workers are the honored guests, and will be on hand to answer questions and describe what it was like to work in the lead mines many years ago. A special collection of old miners’ lamps, some dating back to the late 18th century, will be shown. Local mining artifacts, photographs and paper items recently acquired by the historic site will also be displayed. The Missouri Mines State Historic Site is located in Park Hills on the south side of Highway 32 at the Flat River Drive overpass. For more information on the event, contact the site at 573-431-6226.

The University of Missouri Wurdack Farm at Cook Station, will host a Management Intensive Grazing School on Thursday, September 25th & Friday, September 26th. The two-day program will include guest speakers covering the topics of grazing system layout and design, watering systems, fence systems, soil fertility, livestock nutrition, and forage quality and growth. Additionally, two farm tours will be included to allow participants to get hands on experience, and observe existing grazing systems. The cost of the two-day school is $85 per person or $120 per farm couple. This fee includes the cost of meals and the resource books and other handout materials pertinent to the course. A $50 advance deposit will be required to reserve a space, and must be received by no later than September 19th. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers jumped out to a 10-1 lead before the Cuba Lady Wildcats took advantage of a couple of Salem miscues to score four runs, but the Lady Tigers held on for a 10-5 win. Camryn Pryor and Shelby Carr each had three RBI in the game while Savannah Hanning scored four times. Salem is now 5-1 on the year.

The Salem Football Tigers will travel to Thayer to face the Bobcats starting at 7:00 tonight. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com with Tiger Talk and Coach Brian McNamee starting at 6:30. Salem is 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be participating in the Cabool Invitational throughout the day on Saturday.

Johnny Cueto (18-8) allowed just three hits, struck out seven and walked one over eight innings, becoming the second pitcher in the majors to reach 18 wins as he out dueled Lance Lynn, 1-0. Lynn (15-9) was nearly equal to Cueto, surrendering just one run on three hits with six strikeouts in eight frames. However, his lone walk of the day would come back to hurt him as Brandon Phillips scored the only run in the 8th inning after a lead-off walk. The Cards lost three of four to the Reds and will be back home to face the Colorado Rockies tonight starting at 7:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Football.

Will Middlebrooks went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as the Boston Red Sox downed the division-leading Kansas City Royals, 6-3, in the opener of a four-game series. Liam Hendriks (1-2) was filling in for an injured Danny Duffy and did not make it out of the third inning to take the loss. The Royals are now 1/2 game behind Detroit in the race for the AL Central. The two teams will play again tonight.

The Missouri Tigers will host Central Florida Saturday with the game starting at 11:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 10:00 on KSMO. Missouri is 2-0 on the year.

The St. Louis Rams will try for their first win of the year as they travel to Tampa Bay on Sunday for a 4:05 start. The Kansas City Chiefs will also be in search of their first win as they will be in Denver to face the Broncos starting at 4:25.

Funeral services for Albert “Jim” Kell of Cedar Hill and formerly of Salem, age 84, will be held Saturday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Roy Phillip Barton formerly of Rolla, age 85, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. VIsitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes or American Heart Association.

Memorial services for Madelyn Florence Bridges of Salem, age 81, will be held Saturday at 1:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Ivan Anderson of Bunker, age 70, will be held Saturday at 4:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visistation will be from 2:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department.

Visitation for Joseph Ventimiglia of Vichy, age 84, will be held Monday at 12:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla with a private funeral service to follow.

Funeral services for Ethel G. Cooley of Newburg, age 82, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Rolla Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time on Monday. Interment will be at the Ozark Memorial Garden Cemetery in Rolla.

Graveside services for Hazel Jean Kozlowski of Daingerfield, Texas, age 84, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville.

Funeral services for Josephine Gruber Smith of St. Louis, formerly of St. James, age 96, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the St. James Episcopal Church in St. James. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 that morning until service time. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Memorial services for Shirley Jean Scowden of Steelville, age 81, will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
