The Salem Police Department released their reports for mid-August. On Tuesday, August 14th at 11:59 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 35-year old Salem female in the 100 block of North Iron who had three active arrest Dent County warrants. She was taken into custody on the warrants and released to Sheriff’s Department. On Wednesday, August 15th at 12:45 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 30-year old Salem male in the 300 block of East Truman who had an active arrest warrant from Crawford County. He was taken into custody and incarcerated at Dent County Jail pending extradition. Later that morning at 7:32, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a female left without paying for fuel. Further investigation revealed a credit card was used to purchase fuel but did not register. An officer located the female and she returned to pay for the fuel. On Friday, August 17th at 4:33 in the afternoon, an officer made contact with a 23-year old Salem female at the police station who had an active arrest warrant from Newburg. She was taken into custody and later released with a court date after posting bond. That evening at 9:00, an officer made contact with a 23-year old Salem female at the police station who had an active arrest warrant from Crawford County. She was taken into custody and later released with a court date after posting bond. On Saturday, August 18th at 6:36 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 31-year old Van Buren male on an active arrest warrant from Reynolds County. The suspect was incarcerated at Dent County Jail pending extradition. On Monday, August 20th at 3:50 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $6.96. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 9:28, an officer was dispatched to the City Hall parking lot in reference to a male subject urinating on the building. That investigation led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male for indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Tuesday, August 21st at 2:42 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 44-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated, harassment, open beer container, and for two active City of Salem arrest warrants. He was issued summons to appear in court and incarcerated. That afternoon at 1:58, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen credit card. That investigation revealed that someone unknown took a credit card and used it for the amount of $36.01. Anyone with information about the stolen credit card, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
The University of Missouri Wurdack Farm at Cook Station will host a Management Intensive Grazing School September 27th and 28th. The two-day program will include guest speakers covering the topics of grazing system layout and design, watering systems, fence systems, soil fertility, livestock nutrition, and forage quality and growth. Additionally, two farm tours will be included to allow participants to get hands on experience, and observe existing grazing systems. The cost of the two-day school is $85 per person or $120 per farm couple. This fee includes the cost of meals and the Resource books and other handout materials pertinent to the course. A $50 advance deposit will be required to reserve a space, and must be received by no later than September 21st. The South Central Missouri Literacy Council and Rolla Adult Education and Literacy are hosting a volunteer tutor training on September 18th at the Phelps County Court House Multipurpose Room, 502 West 2nd Street, Rolla, from 9:00 am until noon. This training will prepare volunteers to become tutors for adults who need one-to-one help with basic reading or math skills. Tutors may also help in class sites as volunteer tutors who assist the site teacher with students. There are classes in Rolla, St. James, Cuba, Steelville, and Salem. Volunteers are needed in each of these locations. Just a couple of hours a week is all that is needed for you to change an individual's life and help someone gain the basic skills needed to become more successful. An accident occurred on Sunday at 9:31 in the evening in Osage County on Highway 63 about half a mile south of Route E. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Ford F150 driven by 46-year old Robert Copeland of Salem traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. He suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to the St. Mary’s Hospital then life flighted to the University Hospital. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was towed by Beck Motors of Freeburg.

Salem used a nine run 2nd inning as the Lady Softball Tigers beat Bourbon on Tuesday, 15-0, in four innings. Emily Moser finished with 3 RBI and Cortney Putman pitched a complete game, allowing two hits and striking out seven. The Lady Tigers are now 8-3 on the year and will host Steelville on Thursday.
Alexi Amarista and Logan Forsythe each drove in a pair of runs to lead the San Diego Padres over the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, in the middle test of a three game set. David Freese smacked a solo homer and Jon Jay and Skip Schumaker also tallied an RBI for the Cardinals, who have dropped five of six. The Cardinals and Padres will play again tonight at 5:00 on KSMO.
Will Smith spun seven scoreless innings on Tuesday as the Kansas City Royals thumped the Minnesota Twins, 9-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Target Field. Lorenzo Cain crushed a two-run triple among his three hits and Alcides Escobar also knocked in a pair of runs with a three-bagger for the Royals, who have won three of their last four. The Royals and Twins play again tonight.

Funeral services for William J. Leath of Rolla, age 62, will be held today at 1:00 at the Victor Baptist Church in Anutt. Interment will be in the Victor Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Memorial services for Anna Louise Engledow of Salem, age 80, will be held Thursday at 12:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Jim Asher of East End, age 68, will be held Wednesday, September 19th at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 18th from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic Service at 6:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Funeral services for Bonita Sue Westphal of Newburg, age 72, are incomplete at this time. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
A Private Memorial service for Mary Lou Haase of Salem, age 77, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
