The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be finishing up in the Turtle area on Dent County Road 5600, then moving into the Bunker area. Grading would also be done on Dent County Roads 4220, 5220, 6283 and 6287 and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 6280. Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6460. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5210 and 5225 and would be finishing up in the White River Trace and Howes Mill areas. Tune also said that a crew would be finishing up work on Dent County Road 2540, which was washed out and had to be rebuilt to meet FEMA’s standards. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioners Simpson and Tune all attended the South Central County Commissioners Association Meeting that was held on Tuesday. Skiles said the main topic of interest was the Secure Rural Schools Act that has not been reauthorized yet and this would affect Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1 and Bunker R-3. The Secure Rural Schools Act provides money to schools that have a lot of National Forest in their district and it also provides money to the counties road and bridge department. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she attended the Annual Clerk’s Training Session in Kansas City and she also wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the November General Election is October 4^th. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Doe Run Company’s Buick Mine and Mill, part of the company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO), has earned the highly coveted Sentinels of Safety award for its outstanding safety performance in the Large Underground Metal Mine category. The award honors the facility as the safest large underground metal mine in the country for 2007. Co-sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the Sentinels of Safety awards were developed in part by President Herbert Hoover more than 75 years ago and are recognized as one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious occupational safety awards. The Doe Run Company and its predecessor companies have now won the national Sentinels of Safety award 24 times since 1971.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped a 13-3 decision to Cuba yesterday in five innings and are now 3-5 on the year. The JV beat Cuba, 4-3 in a rain shortened two-inning game to go to 4-2 on the year. Both teams are 1-1 in SCA play. The Lady Tigers face Thayer on Monday.

The Salem Football Tigers will try to make it two straight wins as they face the Cabool Bulldogs tonight in SCA Play. Game time is set for 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and on www.ksmoradio.com starting with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt at about 6:20.

The Salem Tiger 12^th Tiger Club Football Parade will be held tonight starting at 6:00. The parade begins at the City Administrative offices and will travel down Fourth Street, then go down Third Street and end up at the football field.

The Missouri Tigers will host Nevada tomorrow at Faurot Field with the game starting at 11:30. Missouri comes into the game with a 2-0 record. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Rich Harden continued his brilliance for the Cubs, throwing six effective innings to give Chicago a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the rubber match of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Todd Wellemeyer (12-7) pitched well enough to win, but his defense cost him the game. The righty gave up two runs -- none earned -- and only three hits in five innings while walking four and striking out two to take the loss. Albert Pujols scored a run and drove in another while Felipe Lopez drove in the other run for St. Louis, which has lost two straight. The Cards and Pittsburgh will play this weekend. KSMO will join the game tonight in progress after Salem Tiger Football.

David DeJesus' run-scoring single in the top of the 10th inning proved to be the game-winner as the Royals avoided a three-game sweep to the playoff-contending Minnesota Twins with a 3-2 victory. Joakim Soria threw a 1-2-3 home half to close out his 36th save of the year. Ramon Ramirez (3-2) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief behind starter Brandon Duckworth, who allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five-plus innings of work. Jose Guillen finished with two hits, a double and an RBI as the Royals halted a three-game skid. Kansas City will be at Cleveland this weekend.

The St. Louis Rams host the New York Giants while Kansas City will take on the Oakland Raiders. Both Missouri teams are 0-1 on the year.

Kansas City Chiefs have signed running back Jackie Battle and wide receiver Maurice Price to the practice squad.
