The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of August. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 28 summons to appear in court, 54 warning tickets, and 68 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 14 accidents, six assaults, two assaults with law enforcement officers, three burglaries, four reports of disorderly conduct, two reports of domestic assault, six reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while intoxicated and/or drugged, two reports of driving while revoked, one report of failure to obey lawful order of the police, one report of felonious restraint, one report of indecent exposure, one report of parental kidnapping, three reports of leaving the scene of an accident and one report of a lost and/or stolen license plate. The department also investigated one report of a missing person, one report for open containers, two reports of a peace disturbance, one report of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, 18 reports of stealing, one report of tampering, and four reports for a 96-hour commitment. They also investigated one report of possession of amphetamine, and one report of possession of marijuana.  The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation during the month of August. The police department received 1,910 calls for service during the month, handled 175 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 73 calls to the animal control officer. They spent eight hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The calls in August included 32 calls for escorts, one call for an intoxicated driver, three calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, two intoxicated pedestrian calls, 10 calls for domestic disputes, and six calls for a wrecker. There were three 911 calls, five calls for a peace disturbance, five calls for alarms sounding, five calls for fights in progress, 13 ambulance assist calls, three fire calls, and two calls for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,472 miles and arrested 22 males and 11 females during the month of August.

The Salem R-80 School District is sponsoring the Salem Chamber’s September 13^th “Jumpin Java” Friday morning networking coffee.  This informal gathering for chamber members will be held at the Visitors Center/Chamber Office located at 200 South Main, from 7:30 – 8:30 am.  Stop in anytime during the hour to catch up, enjoy coffee and pastries and share what’s new at your shop.  Don’t forget to bring your business cards and promotional material.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their Septmeber meeting last week at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from their August meeting, a financial report was reveiwed, bills were also reviewed and file copies were signed. It was noted as of August 31, 2013, 56.7% of the budget has been used compared to the same time period for last year where 74.6% had been used. In the monthly reimbursement report there were a total of 18 calls for the month of August of which five were for landing zones, four were for first responders, four the motor vehicles assists, two for Haz Mat, one for a fire alarm, and two were for training. The total calls year to date for the fire department is 233. In old business there was a discussion of parking lot repair. It was noted that the USDA may have some grant money available and requirements are being reviewed to ensure the district can comply with all requirements and bid figures are being created. Fire Chief Brad Nash then reported that for August there were 180.5 fire call man hours, 96 training man hours and paper work was filed with Conservation for a brush truck. Also reported the electric issues for the department have been taken care of, there was a meeting with the USDA concerning the grant to repair the parking lot and hydrant testing is still in progress. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, October 1^st at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the meeting was then adjourned.

The Missouri Department of Conservation will be hosting several outdoor programs this September in the Ozark Region. Girls Free Fishing Day will be held at the Maramec Spring Trout Park on Saturday, September 14^th from 7:30 am to 7:25 pm. On the second Saturday in September Maramec Spring hatchery holds their Ladies’ Free Fishing day at the trout park. The goal of our event is to provide women of all ages an opportunity to try their hand at trout fishing. The event is free to all women, no license or daily tag required, and we make every effort to provide a relaxed atmosphere where they can learn and ask questions to help increase their chances of success. Maramec Hatchery staff along with volunteers will be on hand to help the participants with all the different aspects of trout fishing. We offer classes and instruction on trout fishing, fish cleaning, cooking, knot tying, and Fish ID. Maramec Spring Park is located 6 miles east of St. James on Highway 8. Funeral services for Rachael Dawn Wisdom of Salem, age 26, will be held today at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Christine A. Webb of Salem, age 83, will be held today at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church Bus Program. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Karen S. Rodgers of St. James, age 65, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the St. James Church of God. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Hughes Cemetery.

Funeral services for Cecile Marjory “Pat” Lewis of Lees Summit, Missouri, formerly of Salem, age 89, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time on Saturday. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery with full military honors.

Funeral services for Ella “Annette” Fenley of St. James, age 74, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Interment will be held privately at the Houf family farm. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

A visitation memorial service for Myrtle Lucille (Stites) Price, age 71, will be this Saturday in Springfield at the Green Lawn Funeral Home.
