The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 240, 542, 544, 638 and 639 and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 609.  Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 604 and 643A. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that crews would be busy repairing several roads where washouts were reported.  Once the repairs to those roads are completed, routine grading would begin on Dent County Roads 314 and 315 and in the Stone Hill area. Tune also said that brush would be cut on various white rock roads throughout the district. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Meramec Community Enhancement Board Meeting Tuesday in St. James.  At 9:30 the Commission met with a representative from Spatial Data Research to discuss the cost and options that will be available to the county for rural addressing. The initial cost for GPS and addressing is $69,000 with the added cost of $8,000 for address notification letters, $10,000 for software and $3,000 for MSAG Services, coming to a total cost of $90,000. The Commission is expected to receive a contract by next Monday and once the contract is signed work on the project will begin within 14 to 30 days. At 11:00, the Commission met with Thomas Haines, Jerry Soard and David Massingale of the National Forest Service to discuss the Medley Hollow Project.  Medley Hollow is 19,000 acres spread out over Dent, Reynolds and Shannon Counties and the plan is to designate less than 2% of the forest into Savannah. The project also consists of controlled burning throughout the area. The Commissions concern is the burning of private land that borders the National Forest and the economic impact it would have on Dent County.  Haines explained that all economic value would be gotten out of the land before any action is taken and absolutely no burning would be done on private land. An accident happened in Dent County Saturday afternoon at 5:27 on Highway 19 about a mile north of Gladden. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Chevy Lumina driven northbound by 23-year old Kayla Sutterfield of St. Louis, lost control of the vehicle while rounding a curve and traveled off the roadway.The Lumina struck an embankment and overturned before coming to rest. Sutterfield suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. The Lumina was totaled and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. Sutterfield was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident and citations are pending.

An accident happened in Shannon County Monday evening at 8:45 on Highway 19 about four miles north of Eminence. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Dodge Durango driven southbound by 16-year old James E. Stephens of Eminence, hydroplaned and slid off the right side of the roadway, striking a tree. Stephens suffered minor injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Dodge sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Tyler’s Towing of Eminence. Stephens was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

School will dismiss early on Wednesday, September 12^th due to a teacher in-service. William Lynch will dismiss at 11:15, Salem R-80 Upper Elementary will dismiss at 11:20, Salem R-80 Jr. and Sr. High Schools will dismiss at 11:30, and the rural schools, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will dismiss at 11:45.

The Salem 9th Grade Football Team defeated Ava 30-22 last night. Jared Shorey had two touchdowns and two-2 point conversions for Salem, while Jonathan Hambacker ran for a touchdown and Kevin Presley blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for touchdown. Ryan Smith also added a two-point conversion for Salem who is now 1-1 on the year. The game scheduled for next week with Union has been cancelled.

Aramis Ramirez went 4-for-5 with two home runs and three runs scored as the Chicago Cubs crushed St. Louis, 12-3, in the make-up game of an August 19 rainout at Wrigley Field. Derrek Lee had three hits, including a home run, and scored twice for the Cubs, who won for just the third time in eight games. Coupled with Milwaukee's 9-0 loss at Pittsburgh, Chicago moved into a tie with the Brewers atop the NL Central. Cardinals’ starter Joel Pineiro (4-3) took the loss, charged with eight hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings, his shortest outing since being acquired from Boston on July 31. So Taguchi hit a two-run homer and Jim Edmonds added a solo blast for the Cardinals, losers of four in a row and five of six. St. Louis is three games behind the division leaders. Cardinals’ outfielder Chris Duncan did not play and returned to St. Louis with an apparent sports hernia injury suffered on Sunday. The Cardinals stay on the road and will be in Cincinnati tonight starting at 6:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Justin Morneau drove in a pair of runs to lead the Minnesota Twins over the Kansas City Royals, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Morneau ended 2-for-3 and Jason Kubel also had two hits, including a two-run double, for the Twins, who have won two straight after dropping six in a row. Joey Gathright had two hits and Mike Sweeney drove in both runs for Kansas City, which has lost six consecutive, including the first four during its current six-game homestand. Kansas City starter Billy Buckner (0-1) suffered the loss. The right-hander was charged with three runs on three hits, striking out four and walking five. KC's David DeJesus was hit by a pitch for a single-season team-record 19th time this year. The season series between these two clubs is tied 8-8. The two teams play again tonight.

Graveside services for R.E. “Doc” Weaver of Salem, age 80, will be held today at 2:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Gathering in honor of Doc Weaver will be today from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Memorial District Hospital or the Dent County Animal Shelter.

Funeral services for Myrtle N. Vest of Jefferson City, age 93, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be this from 10:00 until time for service. Interment will be in the Upper Bee Fork/Davis Cemetery in Reynolds County. Memorials are suggested to the Sheltered Workshop, Jefferson City.

Funeral services for Jesse Presesr of Warrenton, Mo. age 22, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Westover Cemetery, Steelville.

Funeral services for Veradean Hagler of Pacific, formerly of Salem, age 83, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
