The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the city hall council chambers. The board approved the request from Fred Whitaker to close 4th Street from noon to midnight on May 30th, 2015 to hold a “Moonlight Madness.” John Dismer from the Military Order of the Purple Heart was not in attendance and will be at the next meeting.  The board approved the bid for the MAQS Street resurfacing on Carnett Industrial Drive and the parking lot at the City Administrative Offices from Donelson Construction Company from Clever, Missouri for $67,521.00. The board also approved the bid from Pro Track and Tennis, Inc. from Bennington, Nebraska for the resurfacing of the Tennis Courts for $11,945 that includes a five-year warranty on the lines and seams. The board went on to approve the lease/purchase bids from Town and Country Bank of 1.79% for three years for the $125,320 balance of the new Street Sweeper, and 1.57% for two years for the $46,900 balance for the 2011 Ford 4x4 truck. The board lastly approved the bid from Godi’s Excavating for the demolition of the city owned house at 716 East Roosevelt for $4,250. City Administrator Ray Walden said the Community Betterment Judges would be in Salem today from 8:30 until 10:30 starting the program off at the ONCRC at 8:30. He wanted to thank the United Methodist Church for their workday Saturday and for the work city crews have been doing cleaning up many areas of the city. The City Wide Yard Sale will be held on October 4th followed by the City Clean-Up Week October 6th through the 10th. On October 18th, the city will once again have a special electronics recycling collection on West Grand. Walden said the city would be advertising those events when they get nearer. He said city members will be attending Missouri Municipal League meetings next week and the Tiger Trail Kickoff will be held Saturday from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Upper Elementary School. Mayor J.J. Tune thanked Tod Kinerk for his work in saluting the timber industry and its impact on the economy in Dent County with Timber Days, and also the people involved in making the event a success that includes a steering committee, financial contributors and the groups and individuals who helped make it possible including the Salem Police Department, the Hospital, the Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Department. The board approved Bill #3280 to create an ordinance to rezone a number of lots in the Douglas Park addition from Residential R-3 to Commercial C-1. The board also approved sending the employee delegate Jarred Brown to the LAGERS meeting in St. Louis in October along with Walden representing the city before the board went into closed session.

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Thursday, August 28th at 12:18 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Pizza Hut parking lot in reference to a fight in progress. That investigation revealed that a 28-year old Salem female had assaulted a 20-year old Salem female. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. That night at 7:54, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation revealed that two juvenile males of Salem had stolen a bottle of vodka. They were detained and were later released to a parent. On Saturday, August 30th at 1:05 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 34-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that night at 8:38, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of South Henderson in reference to a strong odor of marijuana emanating from an apartment. The investigation led to the arrest of a 47-year old Salem male for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  He was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Sunday, August 31st at 1:39 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year old male on a fugitive warrant from Texas County and possession of marijuana. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that night at 11:11, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to shoplifting. The investigation revealed that three male juveniles of Salem had stolen alcohol and were in possession of it. They were detained and later released to a parent. That same night at 11:35, an officer was at a residence in the 700 block of South Elmer for a reported theft. During the investigation, a 17-year old Salem male was found to be in possession of intoxicants. He was taken into custody, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Wednesday, September 3rd at 11:05 in the morning, an officer responded to a location in the 600 block of South Highway 19 in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation revealed that someone took a Stihl weed eater with a chainsaw attachment, valued at $1,000, from a blue 2007 Ford truck. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to West Plains in two sets on Monday, 8-25 and 9-25. Salem is now 0-5 on the year and they will play at Licking Thursday night at 6:00.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back as they blasted the Houston Lady Tigers, 16-1 in four innings. Shelby Carr went 3-4 with two RBI, Peyton Curley went 2-3 with two RBI and scored three times as the Lady Tigers finished with 11 hits and received 11 walks and two batters were hit by pitch. Kari Hatridge went four innings and gave up three hits and a run while striking out five. Salem is now 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA. Salem will be at Cuba Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

Devin Mesoraco went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, and the Cincinnati Reds halted the locomotive that is the St. Louis Cardinals with a 9-5 victory on Tuesday. Michael Wacha (5-6) allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits and three walks and was pulled without recording an out in the fifth. The Cardinals and Reds play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 5:35.

Max Scherzer tossed 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball and the Detroit Tigers topped the Kansas City Royals 4-2 in the middle test of a three-game set to cause a tie atop the AL Central. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight in the finale of their series, with first pitch set for 6:08.

Memorial services for Glen Eugene Knight of Salem, age 57, will be held tonight at 6:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Knight family.

Memorial services for Joseph “Red” Black of Salem, age 63, will be held tonight at 6:00 pm at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Lenoria J. Davis of Excelsior Springs, age 70, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Albert “Jim” Kell of Cedar Hill and formerly of Salem, age 84, will be held Saturday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.

Memorial services for Madelyn Florence Bridges of Salem, age 81, will be held Saturday at 1:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
