An accident happened at 9:15 Wednesday night in Dent County on Highway 19 about seven miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Ford Tempo driven by 22-year old Benjamin A. Light of Salem, failed to negotiate a curve causing the Tempo to travel off the roadway and strike a tree. Light suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the Salem EMS to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Light was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident and the Tempo sustained extensive damage. The vehicle was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving an active warrant, drug activity, and shoplifting. On Thursday, September 3rd at 12:30 p.m. an officer while on patrol observed a 22-year old Salem female who had an active warrant for her arrest.  She was taken into custody on the City of Salem warrant, pled guilty to the charge and paid the fine plus court costs.  She was then released. At 5:21 p.m. that evening, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of West Glendale in reference to drug activity. The report led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem female for possession of a controlled substance.  She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. On Friday, September 4th at 10:30 a.m. an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to shoplifting. The report led to the arrest of a 29-yeardold male and a 20-yeardold female both of Springfield, Missouri for stealing. The suspects were incarcerated pending the application for warrants.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving tampering, trespassing and harassment. On Thursday, September 3rd at 6:42 in the morning, the Sheriff’s Department received a call from the resident on County Road 4170. According to the report, a person or persons unknown had sprayed the side of his truck with gold spray paint. On Monday, September 7th at 12:54 in the early morning, the Sheriff’s Department received a call from a resident on County Road 2300. According to the report, the resident reported that someone had started a fire in his driveway. Upon closer inspection, the fire was coming from a broken mason jar. The top of the mason jar had a piece of cloth put down through the lid, after which the lid was screwed down onto the jar. There was a smell of gasoline on the glass jar. The resident’s sister had come to visit and saw a jar burning. The jar was upright and had flames shooting out of the top of the jar, about three-foot off the left side of the driveway. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol conducted two Safety Check-Points in Dent County on Sunday, September 6th. One was conducted on Highway K at Highway ZZ and the other was on H Highway at County Road 618. There was one DWI driver arrested at each of the checkpoints. Anyone with any information regarding the motor vehicle tampering, trespassing or harassment reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-4231.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the traffic crash and arrest totals for Troop I during the Labor Day weekend counting period.  This year’s counting period began at 6:00 pm on Friday, September 4th and ended at 11:59 pm, Monday, September 7th. During that period, troopers assigned to the six counties that comprise Troop I, investigated 38 traffic crashes that resulted in seven injuries and no fatalities.  Troop I officers also made eight arrests for driving while intoxicated. Over the same holiday period last year, troopers assigned to Troop I investigated 20 crashes that resulted in 12 injuries and no fatalities. Troop I officers made three DWI arrests last year over the Labor Day weekend counting period. As a part of “Operation  C.A.R.E.” (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the holiday weekend, Troop I officers issued 327 citations for speeding, 66 for seat belt violations, and five for child restraint violations. Troopers also assisted 131 motorists.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Owensville tonight starting at 5:30. Both the varsity and JV are 2-1 going into the non-conference matchup.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host Cuba today starting at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Fields. The Lady Varsity Tigers are 1-5 this year and 0-2 in the SCA.

Adam Wainwright pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his major league-best 18th win and Albert Pujols hit two homers, as St. Louis completed a three-game sweep of Milwaukee with a 5-1 victory. Wainwright (18-7) limited Milwaukee to five hits, walked one and struck out six. Pujols, meanwhile, increased his MLB-best home run total to 47, recording his 10th multi-homer game of the season. He finished with three hits, while Wainwright doubled and scored. Colby Rasmus had an RBI triple for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who have won 10 of their last 12. The Cards have the day off before hosting Atlanta this weekend.

Billy Butler had three doubles, two RBI and a run scored, while Robinson Tejeda pitched six shutout frames in Kansas City's 5-1 victory over Detroit. Tejeda (2-1) scattered three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in his second straight start for an ailing Gil Meche. Closer Joakim Soria picked up his 24th save of the year. Kansas City won three in a row for the first time since July 4-6 and won a home series for the first time since sweeping Cincinnati back in June -- a total of 13 home series. The Royals and Tigers will play this afternoon at Kaufmann Stadium.

Funeral services for William Bernard Harris of St. Peters, formerly of Cherryville, age 76, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville.

Funeral services for Robert Otto (Bob) Schafer, Sr. of Salem, age 72, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Gideon International and the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home.

Memorial services for Margaret Emma Conyk of Salem, age 87, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness. Memorials may be made to the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness.

Funeral services for Delbert Boyher of Salem, age 89, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery near Salem, with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Bradley J. Berry of Salem, age 48, will be held on Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Berry Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Graveside services for Kenneth Dale Jones of Rolla, age 70, will be held Monday at 2:00 at the Rolla City Cemetery with Full Military Honors. All the arrangement are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
