Cesar Izturis' check-swing grounder brought home Brendan Ryan with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, in the opener of a key NL Central three-game series at Busch Stadium. Izturis barely got around on a Marmol (2-4) fastball, but his check-swing pushed the ball toward second base. Ryan took off on contact and his smart slide to the outside of home plate beat the throw to give the Cardinals the victory. Albert Pujols tied the game in the seventh inning with a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who have won three straight and currently sit 3 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the top spot in the NL wild card race. Kyle Lohse started and allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking two. Chris Perez (3-2) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for the win. The scheduled starters for tonight are St. Louis' Braden Looper and Chicago's Ted Lilly and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio at 6:55.

The St. Louis Cardinals addressed recent media reports regarding the uncertainty over the condition of Albert Pujols' right elbow Tuesday. The team released a statement saying both Pujols and his representatives are in agreement that his condition does not appear to be season-threatening nor do they have a clear indication that it will or will not require future surgery.

Justin Morneau had a two-run homer and Joe Mauer also drove in two runs, as the Minnesota Twins inched their way closer to the division lead with a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game set from the Metrodome. Miguel Olivo homered for the Royals. Jose Guillen went 3-for-4 and drove in the other run in defeat. Brian Bannister (7-15), who hasn't won since June 23 and hasn't beaten an American League team since topping the Cleveland Indians back on June 1, took the loss after getting roughed up for seven runs on 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work. It was the 27-year-old hurler's first career loss to the Twins. The two teams will play again tonight.
