The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a mental commitment order, shoplifting, active warrant, and property damage. On Monday, August 30
th at 9:13 at night, an officer transported a 52-year old female from Salem to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Tuesday afternoon at 2:00, August 31
st, an officer was detailed to Caroline’s Discount Groceries in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report revealed that a 37- year-old female of Salem took items valued at $6.00. Later that evening at 6:10, an officer made contact with a 23-year old male of Salem who had an active warrant from the City of Salem. He was taken into custody on the warrant and was incarcerated. Later on that night at 9:34, an officer was dispatched to the 1500 block of South Water Street in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 34-year old male of Salem for property damage, driving while intoxicated, speeding, failing to stop for a posted stop sign, and resisting arrest. He was incarcerated pending the application of warrants. A Hunter Education Class will be held on Friday, September 17th from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and on Saturday, September 18th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Commons Youth Building. Lunch will be from 12:00 to 1:00 and will not be provided. Students MUST attend both days. Those successfully completing the course will receive a Hunter Education Certification Card from the Missouri Department of Conservation. Such certification is MANDATORY before a hunter can purchase a hunting permit. Certification is limited to students who are 11 years of age or older. Students under the age of 16 should bring proof of age. Students need to pre-register by calling 729-3181.
The Salem Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest is seeking you comments on a proposal for the Scotia Cemetery Prescribed Burn Project. This project is located on about 285 acres of National Forest System lands and consists of a 24-acre burn. The primary purpose is to improve the conditions of under story vegetation and to provide increased protection for heritage resources in a portion of the Nova Scotia Ironworks, an area of special historical significance that was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Salem Ranger District is proposing prescribed burn treatments to reduce encroaching vegetation which currently obstructs archaeological resources present, to improve the quality of vegetation, and to reduce hazardous fuels. All fuels will be removed from grave markers, monuments, or any other elements that could be damaged from the fire. Comments should be specific to the project. Written or oral comments may be submitted via mail, telephone or in person. Include you name, address, title of the project, your comments and your signature. Written comments should be addressed to James Turner, Environmental Coordinator, Salem Ranger District, 1301 South Main Street, Salem, MO 65560 or call 729-2867, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. Comments will be accepted until October 1st.
The regular monthly meeting of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission will be held tonight at the MRPC office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James beginning at 7:30. After approval of the agenda and several contracts, Kraig Bone will report on MREPC activities, Tom Klebba will report on business loan activities and T.R. Dudley will report on workforce development activities. Chairman Russell Scheulen and Director Richard Cavender will then report on issues of interest. The regular monthly meeting of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at Cuba today to face the Lady Wildcats starting at 4:30.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the Owensville Dutchgirls tonight. The JV game will begin at 6:00 with the varsity match to follow.
Ryan Braun homered and drove in a total of four runs to back Chris Capuano's solid performance on the mound, as the Milwaukee Brewers dominated the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Miller Park. Albert Pujols hit his 36th homer of the season for the Cardinals, who remained six games behind Cincinnati for first place in the National League Central. The Reds lost to the Rockies Wednesday night. Jaime Garcia (13-7) lasted just four frames, giving up a career-high seven runs on seven hits to have a three-start win streak snapped. He also struck out four and walked two. The Cardinals will be in Atlanta tonight starting at 5:50 on KSMO Radio.
Cardinals' reliever Trevor Miller was diagnosed Wednesday with soreness and stiffness in his left elbow. Miller was examined in St. Louis by Dr. George Paletta. An MRI scan revealed a forearm strain, rendering Miller day-to-day. The team also announced third baseman David Freese, who is out the remainder of the season, underwent a procedure in Colorado for a debridement of his left ankle. He will begin therapy this week.
Denard Span punctuated a three-run fifth inning with a two-run triple, and the Minnesota Twins held on to beat Kansas City, 4-3. Zack Greinke (8-12), who entered with an 0-3 record and a 10.29 ERA in three starts against the Twins this year, allowed four runs and five hits in a complete-game performance. Brayan Pena knocked in two runs for the Royals. The Royals' will have the day off today.
University of Missouri sophomore DE Aldon Smith was named Big 12 co-Defensive Player of the Week. Smith was honored for his standout performance in Mizzou’s 23-13 win last Saturday over border rival Illinois which saw MU’s defense pitch a second-half shutout to aid the comeback win. Earlier this week, Smith was also named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Funeral services for Grace M. Pyatt of Salem, age 101, will be held today at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Wofford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Wofford Cemetery.
Funeral services for Richard V. Valleroy of St. James, age 72, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Church in St. James. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 with a prayer service at 7:30; then again on Friday from 9:30 until service time at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Sewell Cemetery in rural Maries County. Memorials are suggested to the St. Anthony Hospice House.
Funeral services for Maxine Louise Smith of Velvet Ridge, Arkansas, age 80, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery.
Funeral services for William L. Berardy, Jr., age 94, of Salem will be Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary.
