In closed session Tuesday evening following the regular board meeting, the City of Salem Board of Alderman approved Resolution #22-2011 that authorized the Mayor to execute an employment contract between the City of Salem and Clayton Earl Lucas II. Clayton Lucas was the unanimous choice of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen to be Salem’s new City Administrator. He will assume his new duties on Monday, October 3^rd. Clayton Lucas is presently the Assistant City Manager of Lindsay, California, which is a rural community located in the agricultural area of the San Joaquin Valley. He has additional local government experience in law enforcement, financial management, personnel and city planning in both Lindsay and St. George, Utah. During his tenure at Lindsay, he achieved success in securing approximately $9 million in grant funding for several important city projects. His primary focus as Assistant City Manager was finding ways to trim City spending, and re-establish financial accountability and public trust in the wake of a crisis triggered by previous administrative leaders. Lucas has personal ties to the region, growing up in the small town of Sallisaw located in far Northeastern Oklahoma where his mother still resides, and he annually returns to the Missouri Ozarks for vacation. Lucas is married to his wife Lora, and together they have three sons: 10-year old Clayton, eight-year old Jonah, and three-year old Willie. They will live in Salem and plan to enroll the two older children in Salem public schools. Under the terms of the employment agreement approved by the Board, Lucas will earn $68,500 per year. The salary is in line with what similar Missouri cities offer in the region. The City plans to schedule and host a community welcoming reception for the new City Administrator and his family shortly after he begins the job.

The Bank of Salem is sponsoring the September 13^th chamber members lunch meeting at Southwest Baptist University. The topic will be “MU Extension and Missouri Agriculture…What’s New in 2011”. Ted Cunningham will give a brief overview of the MU Extension from a state-wide and local county perspective and then have a more in depth visit about MU Extension’s Agriculture program as well as current topics regarding Animal Agriculture. The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, warrants, theft, and a shoplifter. On Tuesday, August 23rd at 7:30 pm, an officer while on patrol observed a 24-year old Salem male, who had and active warrant from Bourbon Department of Public Safety. He was taken into custody on the active warrant, later posted bond and was released with a court date. At 8:50 that same evening, an officer was detailed to Crowley’s Home Works on Highway 32 East in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke the windshield of an Isuzu delivery truck. The value of the damage is approximately $500.00. Then at 9:04 that same night, an officer was sent to a residence in the 1400 block of South Wines in reference to a theft.  That investigation revealed that a 21-year old Salem male stopped at a residence and requested to get some water in a bucket for an overheated vehicle. He retrieved the water and then asked to use the restroom. While in the home, the suspect took a wallet and contents valued $267.00. He left the residence and did not return the water bucket valued $15.00. Further investigation led to his arrest and he was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Thursday, August 25th at 7:00 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the City Truck Parking Lot on Babb Lane in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took one hundred gallons of fuel, a stainless steel wiring harness and 32-honeycomb strip lights all valued $1036.53. At 9:59 that same morning, an officer was detailed to the City Truck Parking Lot on Babb Lane in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a cattle pod trailer valued at $32,000.00. At 3:10 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the BP Convenience Store located on Highway 19 South in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown driving a red and white Ford truck pumped $47.53 in fuel and left without paying. That same afternoon at 3:15, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 20-year old female of Rolla for stealing $30.43 and being a minor in possession. She was issued summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage, or thefts reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped a 9-5 decision to Houston Tuesday afternoon to fall to 0-2 in the SCA. Salem is 3-4 on the year and they will host Cuba this afternoon at 4:30. You can hear the game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com starting at 4:20 with Tiger Talk and Coach Carey Davison.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers are looking for their first win of the year at Owensville tonight starting at 5:30.

Chris Carpenter tossed a four-hitter for his first shutout of the year in St. Louis' 2-0 win over Milwaukee, but the game turned ugly in the ninth inning. Carpenter (9-9), who walked a pair of batters, had five strikeouts. Rafael Furcal homered and Yadier Molina added a sacrifice fly for the Cardinals, who took two of three in the series. St. Louis will have the day off today.

Guillermo Moscoso carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and took a no-hitter into the eighth, but had to settle for his longest career outing Wednesday in Oakland's 7-0 win over Kansas City. Bruce Chen was charged with six runs -on eight hits and three walks. The Royals will be in Seattle tonight.

Funeral services for Tammy Lynn Bedford of Viburnum, age 30, will be held today at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Interment will be in the Sam Crocker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

Funeral services for Nelda Chrystell Forbes of Rolla, age 74, will be held Sunday 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Landmark Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Samuel A Ward of Rolla, age 89, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Tuesday at 11:30 with full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the First Assembly of God of Rolla or Gideon’s International.
