The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday evening at the city hall council chambers. Alderman Brad Nash was not in attendance as he was at a Dent County Fire Protection District meeting. At the aldermen meeting, the board approved a bid for the financing of two Ford Explorers for a two-year period in the amount of $45,890 from the Bank of Salem for 3.04%. They also approved the bid from Rolla Asphalt for hot mix asphalt overlay at a cost of $63.50 per ton and the city will need approximately 1,800 tons. The board then approved the bid from Kirker Electric of $11,495.20 for the purchase and installation of the 22kw generator for the police department and that includes the auto transfer switch. The board further approved a bid from Brady Adams to purchase from the city 3,980 pounds of scrap coated copper wire for $1.65 per pound. City Engineer Bill Huffman gave a report on the R & C Family Mobile Park on the work that had been done to the mobile homes in the time given, but the report also included that none of the unoccupied trailers had been removed. After a discussion, the board postponed any action until the next meeting. Mayor Gary Brown then asked the Board to set the Halloween hours for Saturday, October 30
th from 6:00 to 9:00, and that Water Street from Franklin to the KFC entrance as well as Doss Road between Highway 32 and Roosevelt be closed for church activities during that time. The board approved his request. The mayor said that he and City Clerk Mary Happel would be attending the MML Conference from Sunday through next Thursday. Brown also said that the trip to the upper Michigan Peninsula scheduled for Thursday to check out Bio-Mass has been postponed and rescheduled for September 16
th. He also said that a meeting would be held on September 21
st at 10:00 with the MRPC about the storm water grant. Brown reminded the aldermen that the Community Betterment Judges would be in town next Tuesday, September 14
th. The board postponed any action on Bill #3208 as City Attorney Nanci Wisdom has not seen the contract for the construction of the sidewalk on Route J, and the board tabled Bill 3209 approving a settlement with T-Mobile. The board approved the committee appointments to the Utility Committee, Community Services Committee and the Tree Board as submitted by Mayor Brown. The board agreed to send City Clerk Mary Happel to the LAGERS meeting in Springfield October 21st and 22
nd to represent the city while Dennis Floyd will represent the employees. The city attorney asked that the existing pole agreements and franchise fee discussion be postponed until the next meeting. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital will conduct their FINAL HEALTH SCREENING FAIR for 2010 on Wednesday, September 8th, Thursday, September 9th and Friday, September 10th in the physician’s library from 6:00 to 9:00 am. The Health Screening Fair will offer the bone density (osteoporosis) test for $25; a general health panel (blood) for $25; a cardiac CRP (inflammation) for $10; a TSH (thyroid function) for $10; a hemoglobin A1C (3-month blood glucose) for $10; a urine microalbumin & creatinine (kidney function) for $10; and for guys only the PSA (prostate) for $10. There will also be FREE screenings for pulmonary (lung) function; blood pressure check; body fat %; and on Thursday and Friday only there will be a FREE glaucoma screening. US Representative Jo Ann Emerson will continue her annual Farm Tour today at Jadwin Lumber, located at 1601 South Jackson Street in Salem from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Emerson is leading a congressional effort to continue recognition of waste wood as a renewable fuel source by the Environmental Protection Agency. The byproducts from many forest products manufacturers are used in low-emission, high-efficiency boilers in use or planned for many Missouri communities.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers banged out 16 hits and scored eight times in the bottom of the 6th inning to help defeat the Houston Lady Tigers, 14-4 at the Salem City Park Field Tuesday. Darian Grogan and Courtney Putman each went 3-4 with two RBI for Salem who is now 2-5 on the year. The Lady Tigers will be at Cuba Thursday afternoon at 4:30.
The Eminence Lady Red Wings swept past the Salem varsity last night in volleyball action in two straight games, 25-15 and 25-10. The JV faired no better as Eminence beat them as well, 25-23 and 25-17.
Casey McGehee's two-run single in the fifth inning proved to be the difference, as the Milwaukee Brewers held off the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-2, on a night that saw all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman record the 600th save of his career. Colby Rasmus went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Yadier Molina had the Cards other RBI. Kyle Lohse went five innings allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking two. St. Louis did not lose ground in the NL Central as the Cincinnati Reds lost their second straight game. The Cards and Brewers finish their three-game series tonight at 6:50 on KSMO.
The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled shortstop Tyler Greene from Triple-A Memphis.
Francisco Liriano pitched seven solid innings and Delmon Young drove in four runs, as the Minnesota Twins cruised to a 10-3 win over the Kansas City Royals in the middle contest of a three-game series. Josh Fields homered for the Royals, who have lost five of their last six overall. Brian Bannister (7-12) started on the hill for KC and suffered the loss after he allowed seven runs on eight hits with two walks over 2 2/3 innings. The Royals finish up their series with the Twins tonight.

Funeral services for Grace M. Pyatt of Salem, age 101, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Wofford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Wofford Cemetery.
Funeral services for Richard V. Valleroy of St. James, age 72, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Church in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 with a prayer service at 7:30; then again on Friday from 9:30 until service time at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Sewell Cemetery in rural Maries County. Memorials are suggested to the St. Anthony Hospice House.
Funeral services for William L. Berardy, Jr., age 94, of Salem will be Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Internment will be held at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
