The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft and property damage. On Tuesday, September 1^st at 3:58 in the afternoon an officer was detailed to Aaron’s Rental Center in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took three laptop computers valued $1,686. On Wednesday, September 2nd at 9:55 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the 600 block of South Pershing in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a check was stolen, forged and cashed. At 3:53 that afternoon, an officer was sent to the 400 block of West Fourth in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke out a window valued at $500. Then at 5:22 that same afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of West Glendale in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke the passenger side rear glass of a red 2001 Dodge Dakota truck. The value of the damage is approximately $150. Anyone with any information regarding the theft or property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. The Board will hear bids for a medium duty truck chassis, a dump body, snowplow and spreader box all requested by the City of Salem. Alderman Brad Nash, Kenneth Nash and Jim Jackson will then discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem along with Jim McDaniels. McDaniels wishes to also discuss asphalting, the brush removal from the storms, and city limit extension. Mayor Gary Brown will also discuss items involving the City of Salem. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3178 and two resolutions will be presented to the Board. At the last meeting the Board voted to limit the flow of traffic to one-way going North on Iron Street between East Rolla Road and East 5^th Street and Bill #3178 is that ordinance needed. Resolution 3-2009 is required by DNR in order for the City to receive grant funds for the new soccer fields, and resolution 4-2009 is a resolution to honor Gary S. Markenson who will be retiring in 2010. Mr. Markenson is with the Missouri Municipal League and has been very instrumental in helping the City of Salem throughout his career. In new and miscellaneous business the annual Lagers meeting will be held October 29^th and 30^th in Springfield. The City of Salem normally sends one employee representative and one City official, and the Board needs to vote as to whether they want to send representatives. Waste Corporation is requesting the week of October 5^th thru the 9^th for the City of Salem Fall Clean-Up. After approval of bills presented for payment by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Tuesday, September 1^st at 3:03 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to Highway 19 South to the R-I school due to a possible propane leak. Upon further investigation there was no leak detected. The scene was under control at 3:17 and a total of eight firefighters responded to the call. On Wednesday, September 2^nd at 1:32 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to Highway 32 West due to heavy smoke coming from behind a structure. Upon arrival there was found to be less than an acre of grass on fire and was believed to have started from a brush pile. The scene was under control at 1:49 and a total of two firefighters responded to the call. On Thursday, September 3^rd at 1;29 in the morning, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to secure a landing zone at the fire station. A total of four firefighters responded to the call.

Derek Freeman scored two touchdowns and rushed for 148 yards to help lead Salem to a 30-0 win over St. Clair Friday night. Ty Floyd also ran for 100 yards and a touchdown, and Ashton Karr added a score for the Tigers. Kevin Presley topped off the night with a 40-yard field goal. Salem is now 1-1 on the year and they will travel to Cabool Friday.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at Houston today at 4;30, while the Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Eminence at 6:00.

Blaine Gabbert, making his first start, threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns, as the Missouri Tigers handled the Illinois Fighting Illini, 37-9, in both squads opener at the Edward Jones Dome. Gabbert, who is a sophomore taking over for the departed and successful Chase Daniel, completed 25-of-33 pass attempts and also rushed for 39 yards and a score. Danario Alexander led the Tigers (1-0) with 10 catches for 132 yards, while Jared Perry added four receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. Wes Kemp chipped in with four catches for 77 yards and a score, as Missouri won its eighth straight season opener.

Chris Carpenter continued to pitch like an ace by throwing a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts, leading the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Brewers in the opener of a three-game set at Miller Park. Carpenter (16-3), who also walked two, has won his last 11 decisions and hasn't lost since June 30. Albert Pujols went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, drove in two runs and scored for the Cardinals, who have won eight of 10. St. Louis leads the NL Central by 11 1/2 games over Chicago, and its magic number to clinch the division stands at 14. Matt Holliday also knocked in a run in the triumph. The Cards and Brewers play tonight at 6:45 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals on Monday activated pitcher Kyle Lohse from the 15-day disabled list. The right-hander was placed on the DL on August 22 with a strained left groin. He also missed time from June 4-July 11 because of a strained right forearm flexor. Lohse is 5-8 with a 4.67 earned run average in 18 starts.

Billy Butler hit two homers and knocked in four runs, as the Kansas City Royals earned a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the finale of a four-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Mike Jacobs and Alberto Callaspo each added RBI singles for Kansas City, which was able to salvage a win in the series. Kyle Davies (7-9) earned the win after allowing a run on five hits in five innings of work. The veteran righty walked six and fanned one, and has won four of his last five decisions. The Royals will host the Detroit Tigers tonight.

The Kansas City Royals shut down right fielder Jose Guillen for the season on Saturday and added a trio of minor league pitchers to their roster.

Funeral services for Louise M. Givens of Jadwin, formerly of Salem, age 71, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Memorial services for Joann Rivera Flores of Salem, age 41, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Flores Family.

Memorial services for Margaret Emma Conyk of Salem, age 87, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness. Memorials may be made to the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness.

Gravesidd services for Kenneth Dale Jones of Rolla, age 70, will be held Monday, September 14^th at 2:00 at the Rolla City cemetery. Full military honors will be held at the cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
