ATTENTION: The Salem Tiger Football Parade that was rescheduled for tonight has been postponed and will be held on September 21st.

The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. For the road reports, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5380, 5390, 6600, 6610 and 6620. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4180 and he was hoping to have one man screening gravel. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2330, 2340, 3030 and 5300. He went on to report that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2075 and 3290 and material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2590 and 5300. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that he had met with Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash regarding the effectiveness of the burn ban that was in Dent County from the end of June until just a few days ago and wanted to thank all the residents for their cooperation. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that her office and the treasurer balanced on all accounts for August, as did the Assessor and Collector’s offices. The Commissioners were going to be signing off on add on’s and abatements as well as approving bills. She went on to say that that last day to register to vote for the General Election in November would be October 10th. Kim Edwards from the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency (SCMCAA) stopped by to request a letter of approval from the Commission. The SCMCAA is applying for grants of $6,500 for emergency assistance and $26,000 for home repairs to be used in Dent County. The funds are federal funds filtered down through HUD and then to the Missouri Housing Development Authority. The Commission agreed 3-0 and signed the request. The Commission then signed off on the actual contract for the bridge replacement of the Swiney Bridge with Widel out of Black Water, Missouri. City of Salem City Administrator Clayton Lucas stopped by to invite and well inform the Commission about several meetings that will take place at the Salem City Hall Auditorium regarding a Community Wide Needs Assessment. Everyone in the City of Salem and Dent County is invited to come attend these meetings.  Everyone’s thoughts and ideas are needed at these meetings to evaluate the progress in the current Community Strategic Plan, which has not been updated since 2007. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday at the Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Several accidents occurred in our area on Thursday. The first accident happened in the morning at 8:25 in Dent County on Highway B about six miles east of Boss. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Ford Escape driven by 17-year old Kenna Piatt of Bunker was traveling eastbound. The Ford Escape traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking a fence and a tree before coming to rest. Piatt suffered serious injuries and was transported by the Air Evac helicopter to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Escape was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The second accident occurred at 11:25 that morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about ten miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a MoDOT John Deere tractor driven by Johnathan Evans of Houston was mowing the south side of the highway when the tire dropped into a drainage ditch, which caused the tractor to overturn and catch on fire. Evans suffered minor injuries ands was taken by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The tractor was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The third accident happened at 3:10 in the afternoon in Texas County on Highway 32 about four miles east of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan ridden by David Fowler of Salem struck a tree that had fallen into the roadway. Fowler suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Kawasaki sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The last accident occurred at 3:15 in the afternoon in Crawford County on the South Outer Road about four miles east of Bourbon. According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 Ford Ranger driven by 40-year old Charles Head of Salem traveled off the right side of the road, returned to the roadway, crossed the centerline, began to overturn, and struck a 2008 Kia Sportage driven by Kimberley Pieper of Sullivan. Head suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by ambulance. The Ford was totaled and the Kia sustained moderate damage. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Chuck’s Towing of Sullivan.

The Salem Tiger football team will host Owensville tonight at 7:00. Salem is 2-0 on the year and the game can be heard on KSMO Radio, online at ksmoradio.com and seen on fidelitylocal6.com.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to Owensville in two sets, 25-17 and 25-12, on Thursday. Salem is now 0-4 on the year and will play in the West Plains Tournament Saturday.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be playing in the Potosi Tournament on Saturday.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will host the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at 7:15 to start a three-game series. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO after the Salem game on a tape delay basis.

Michael Young singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th as the Texas Rangers edged the Kansas City Royals, 5-4, in the final contest of a four-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Jeff Francoeur and Eric Hosmer hit solo home runs in defeat for Kansas City, which will start a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox tonight.

The Missouri Tiger football team will host the seventh-ranked Georgia Bulldogs Saturday night. You’ll be able to hear the second half following the St. Louis Cardinal game on KSMO.

The St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs will both open up the regular season on Sunday. The Rams will be in Detroit to face the Lions and the Chiefs will be hosting the Atlanta Falcons, both game are set for a noon kick-off.

Memorials services for James G. Bushie of St. James, age 55, will be held today at 2:00 at the St. James United Methodist Church in St. James. Memorials may be made to the Tri-County Humane Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James anbd Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Jodi Fay Head of Salem, age 22, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held today from 2:30 to 5:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the mortuary for funeral expenses.

Memorial services for Anna Engledow of Salem, age 80, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for Hazel M. Rhodes of Sullivan, age 87, will be Tuesday at 5:00 at the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 4:00 to 5:00.
