The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done in the West Texas Township on Dent County Roads 244 and 247 and East of Salem on Dent County Roads 416 and 418. Simpson also said that a crew would be cutting down dead trees in Warner Subdivision. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 259, 304, 303, 315 and 316 and on various roads throughout the White River Trace area. Grading would also be done in the Hidden Valley Subdivision and on the white rock roads around town. Tune also said that brush would be cut on the Commons Road and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 405. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the Scenic Rivers Watership Partner meeting that he was supposed to attend on Wednesday was cancelled and will be rescheduled for sometime in October. Commissioners Simpson and Skiles both reported that Tom Haines with the National Forest Service would be at Monday’s meeting at 11:00 to discuss the Medley Hollow Ecosystem Plan. The plan is to convert 500,000 acres of National Forest into savannah by burning off the timber. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that Karen Dean with Spatial Data Research would be at Mondays meeting at 9:30 to discuss the agreement between Dent County and S.D.R for rural addressing. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred Thursday morning at 7:39 in Phelps County on Highway 72 about five miles south of Rolla that took the life of a St. James woman. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Chevrolet pickup driven by 32-year old Marilyn Burnham of St. James was traveling westbound on highway 72. The Chevrolet ran off the right side of the roadway, through a ditch, struck an embankment and became airborne. The Chevrolet then overturned onto the roadway, ejecting the driver. The Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinford pronounced Burnham dead at 8:19 at the scene. The Chevrolet was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by C & C Towing of Rolla.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving drugs. On August 31st the Dent County Sheriff’s Department was assisting the Salem Police Department during a DWI checkpoint. At 10:00 pm, a Dent County deputy made contact with a 21-year old male subject. A computer check led to a citation being issued for driving while suspended. The Salem Police K-9 alerted on the vehicle and an investigation revealed a sandwich bag of a green leafy substance. A citation was issued for possession of under 35-grams of marijuana. At 10:25 the same evening, a Dent County deputy was checking a vehicle and the Salem K-9 alerted on the vehicle. Further investigation led to a small bag containing a green leafy substance being taken into evidence. As a result a 19-year old female was issued a summons for possession of under 35-grams of marijuana. At 11:57 the same evening, a Dent County deputy made contact with an 18-year old female who was an occupant of a vehicle being checked. The Salem Police K-9 alerted on the vehicle and further investigation led to a controlled substance, Xanax, a brown wooden box containing a green leafy substance and a metal smoking device containing residue being taken into evidence. She was issued a summons for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and a summons for possession of under 35-grams of marijuana. A warrant was obtained for possession of a controlled substance with bond set at $7,000. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.
Old-time crafters will demonstrate their skills of the late 19th century at the 111th Anniversary of Montauk Mill celebration Saturday at Montauk State Park near Salem from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The mill will be open for free tours throughout the day. Pioneer demonstrations will show how settlers lived and worked in the Montauk community. Visitors can enjoy demonstrations of flint knapping, blacksmithing and other crafts. See a live corning-grinding exhibition inside the old mill. Sack races and checkers will provide enjoyment for the children and adults alike. Old-style and folk music will fill the day with traditional pioneer fun for visitors of all ages. The Salem JV Football Team defeated the Willow Springs Bears in overtime by the score of 20-14 on an Ashton Karr one-yard touchdown on 4th and goal. Karr also scored on a three-yard run and Jacob Brooks also scored twice for Salem who is 1-0 on the year. The JV will host Ava Monday at 6:00.
The Salem Varsity Football Team will travel to St. Clair to face the Bulldogs in non-conference play starting at 7:00. Salem and St. Clair are both 0-1 on the year. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio stating at 6:25 or go online at 6:50 at www.ksmoradio.com.
Rick Ankiel took his emergence as a slugger to another level, cracking two home runs and ending with a career-high seven RBI to propel the St. Louis Cardinals past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 16-4, in the rain-interrupted finale of a four-game series at Busch Stadium. Ankiel had a three-run homer, a two-run shot and a two-run double for the Cardinals, who moved within a game of both the Brewers and Cubs for first place in the NL Central. Chicago fell to the Dodgers on Thursday, while Milwaukee was idle. Mike Maroth failed to pick up his first win as a Cardinal -- allowing two runs over 1 1/3 innings -- but Kelvin Jimenez (2-0) and the rest of the bullpen picked him up. The 16 runs and 22 hits were both a season high for St. Louis. The Cardinals will be in Arizona tonight and KSMO will join the game in progress after football.

A memorial service for James A. Murray of Salem, age 74, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. A short visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Graveside services for Ruthie Mae Curtis of Jadwin, age 75, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Empire Cemetery in Gladden. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Dorothyleen (Dot) Drewel of Springfield, formerly of Rolla, age 78, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be 12:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Bland. Memorails as suggested to the Shriners Hospital.
Funeral services for Marilyn Burnhma of Rolla, formerly of Bunker, age 32, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Mc Spadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Burnham Family.
Private graveside service will be held for Ray Edward "Doc" Weaver of Salem, age 80. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Salem Memorial District Hospital or the Dent County Animal Shelter.
