The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6350 and 6490, while brush would be cut with the new brush cutter on county roads 5015 and 5450.  Purcell went on to say that he had a man hauling brown rock and a man screening brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5330, 5335, 2160 and 3270, while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 6130. Larson added that the water pump went out on brush cutter #6 and that it was being replaced in house to save costs. He said he also had a man hauling brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that last Thursday all three Commissioners attended the meeting in Houston with US Senator Roy Blunt where they discussed their concerns with the EPA’s application of the clean water act and the reduction in coal use, as well as the proposed Fort Leonard Wood reduction. Skiles congratulated the Timber Fun Day organizers on a very successful event. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reminded voters that October 8th is the last day to register for the November 4th General Election and that anyone with name or address changes should come by her office and make those changes. She said that anyone with questions as to where they are to vote or any other questions could call her office at 729-4144. Curley went on to say that the recount of votes on Constitutional Amendment 1, the Agriculture Amendment, would be conducted Friday starting at 9:00 and it is closed to the public. She said that the Secretary of State’s Office is to certify the recount results by September 15. Curley also said that absentee voting for the General Election would start September 23rd. She added that she had balanced with the Dent County Collector and Assessor’s offices on all add-ons, abatements and monthly collections for August. Town and Country Bank representative Laura Parker was in to complete the paperwork on financing the new brush cutter. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to get signatures for a budget transfer from the Senior Citizens Account. State Representative Jeff Pogue came by to discuss with the Commissioners legislative concerns as he prepares for next weeks veto session. The Commissioners major concern was whether the Governor’s veto of the four tax bills would be overridden. These bills would have a very negative impact on county and municipal finances. Pogue stated that he and legislators in general had received lots of input from both counties and municipalities about the negative impact of these bills and that he felt that a veto override was unlikely. The Agriculture Omnibus Bill that was overridden was also discussed as to the good and bad parts of the bill. Pogue was asked if he thought the Legislature would address the transportation deficiencies in Missouri since the Transportation Sales Tax was so soundly defeated. Representative Pogue said that the Legislature needs to take a look at that issue during the next session. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

The Relay For Life of Dent County will be held this Saturday at the Salem City Park from noon until midnight. For more information you can contact Goldie Spahn at (573) 433-0076.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History is rebuilding its mailing list and needs help. After the renumbering of the many rural routes in the area, as well as some address adjustments in town, the mailing list was in shambles, with almost more mail being returned to the center as undeliverable than being delivered. Because of that problem, it has been decided to completely reconstruct the mailing list from scratch. This means if any person wants to be on the mailing list for flyers and newsletters, he or she needs to contact the Bonebrake Center and give the correct address for delivery. ALSO, the flyers and newsletters may be delivered by e-mail, so if that is preferred, please indicate that and provide the e-mail address. This may be done by dropping a line to Bonebrake Center, 601 North Hickory Street, Salem, MO  65560 or e-mail at bonebrakecenter@embarqmail.com. Leaving a message on the phone with a street address or e-mail address is not recommended.  Call Libby Sanders at 729-3400 for more info.
