On Friday, August 30^th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a missing person. A 35-year-old Salem male was reportedly missing and had not been heard from since Thursday, August 29^th about 1:00 in the afternoon. The missing man was identified as Steven Tong. On Tuesday, September 3^rd at 3:16 pm, a City of Salem employee located a body near the water tower located at Condray and Tower Street. The body was transported to the University Medical Center in Columbia, where an autopsy was performed. The body was identified as the man who had been reported missing, Steven Tong.  Autopsy results revealed Tong's injuries were consistent with that of a fall from a significant height. According to Chief Keith Steelman, the Missouri Highway Patrol flew over the tower to see if there had been any damages or items placed on the tower, and none were found. The Missouri Hospital Association has awarded nearly $2 million in Grow Your Own grants to help hospitals develop and expand the health care workforce according to locally defined needs. The grant funding will support initiatives that help build the skills of the current hospital workforce and attract future health care workers. One of the hospitals to receive $50,000 was the Salem Memorial District Hospital. According to Kathy Weldon, the Salem Memorial District Hospital will improve the monthly orientation and reorientation processes to reduce scheduling conflicts between providing patient care and employee training. The grant will also allow the SMDH to also set up a dedicated training resource room and a mobile training lab.

An accident occurred Tuesday at 4:55 pm in Maries County on Highway 63 one quarter mile South of Vienna.  According to the Highway Patrol report a 1989 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 78 year-old Gilbert L. Wade of Vienna, was waiting to make a left turn and was struck in the rear by a 2002 International Tractor driven by 36 year-old Adam B. Chapman of Jacksonville, Missouri.  According to the report both drivers were wearing their safety restraints and both vehicles were driven from the scene.  Wade sustained minor injuries and was transported by Maries Osage Ambulance to Capital Region Medical Center.

An accident occurred Tuesday in Pulaski County at 5:37 pm on I-44 in St. Robert.  According to the Highway Patrol Report a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by 33 year-old Nathan T. Herren of Dixon, traveled off the left side of the roadway, skidded back on the the roadway, traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a guardrail.  The Cavalier then returned to the roadway and was struck in the rear by a 2008 Kenworth Tractor Trailer driven by 48 year-old Jacqueline Kowalski of Farnham, New York.  The Cavalier was then pushed into the median where it came to rest.  According to the report Herren was not wearing a safety restraint and sustained moderate injuries.  He was transported by Pulaski County Ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Lebanon.  The Cavalier was totaled, while the Kenworth sustained moderate damage.  Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Jack’s Towing.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the traffic crash and arrest totals for Troop I during the Labor Day weekend counting period.  This year’s counting period began at 6:00 pm on Friday, August 30^th and ended at 11:59 pm on Monday, September 2^nd. During that period, troopers assigned to the six counties that comprise Troop I investigated 18 traffic crashes that resulted in six injuries and no fatalities. Troop I officers also made two arrests for driving while intoxicated. As a part of “Operation C.A.R.E.” (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the holiday weekend, Troop I officers issued 313 citations for speed, 110 citations for seat belt violations, and three citations for child restraint violations. They also assisted 174 motorists and issued 660 warnings.

The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team will play at Pacific tonight. Salem is 0-1 on the year and game start is set for 6:00.

Matt Adams' second homer of the game proved to be the difference as the St. Louis Cardinals outlasted the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4, in 16 innings on Wednesday. Adams, who replaced Allen Craig at first base after the latter sprained his left foot rounding first in the fourth inning, took Logan Ondrusek (3-1) deep to right on the second pitch he saw. Carlos Martinez (2-1) secured the win for the Cardinals with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 16th. Matt Carpenter had three hits and scored twice to pace St. Louis, which won for just the second time in its last seven contests. The Cardinals are a game behind Pittsburgh for first place in the NL Central. The Cardinals and Reds play again tonight at 5:35.

Kendrys Morales snapped a tie game in the ninth with a two-run homer and the Seattle Mariners took a 6-4 win from the Kansas City Royals Wednesday in the third test of a four-game series. Jarrod Dyson knocked in two during a four-run fourth for Kansas City, which had a three-game win streak stopped. Starter Ervin Santana lasted only 3 1/3 innings, charged with four runs, seven hits and three walks. The Royals and Mariners play again this afternoon.

The St. Louis Rams signed defensive end Eugene Sims to a two-year contract extension on Tuesday. Originally selected by the Rams in the sixth round of the 2010 draft, Sims has recorded 47 tackles, three sacks and one interception in 38 games with St. Louis.

Funeral Mass for Ellen Rose Geheb of Potosi, age 86, will be held this morning at the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Viburnum at 11:00. Interment will be in the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Cemetery in Viburnum. Memorials may be made to the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Viburnum.

Funeral Mass for Eileen Brugger of Salem, age 95, will be held today at 2:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be held from noon until service time today at the church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Clark of Salem, age 87, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday night. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery in Cook Station. Memorials may be made to the Bible Impact Ministries.

Funeral services for Martha Jean Teasley of Springfield, age 71, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the First Baptist Church of Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Hughes Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

A Memorial service for Helen Kay Simmons of Salem, age 54, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Pentecostal Church of God.
