The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday night at the City Hall Council Chambers after a public hearing and meeting. The board heard a request from Grace Community Church to temporarily close South Water Street from Franklin to the end of the their parking lot on September 16th from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM for a community outreach program. They also want to close the street on Halloween night from 4:00 to 9:00 for a church fellowship and a community event. The Board approved the requests. The city received no bids in time for the utility poles and they will have to be rebid. In the public hearing held prior to the regular meeting, there were no objections for the annexation of the property at 1504 Roberts Street. The Planning and Zoning Board recommended the annexation and that it be zoned R-1, and the alderman approved to have an ordinance put on the agenda at the next meeting. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that the cost of a six-inch sewer line connection to the city sewer system for the Ranch Motel would be $350, the standard charge for that service. Mr. Gollhofer would be responsible for any costs on his private property to make the adjustment to tie in to the city sewer system, including shutting off his lift station. The board received the appraisal on the Old Middle School and the approximate cost to demolish the building would be $43,675 and that does not include any extra cost for asbestos removal and lead paint removal. Once the property would be cleared, the appraised value of the property would be about $130,000. The Board wanted to postpone any decision until after they had time to review the appraisal. The Board will review at a later time committing any resources to the Highway 72 and Route J property as the Capital Improvement Funds for the 2012-2013 year have already been encumbered. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that he and City Clerk Mary Happel have been working with the people from Sullivan Publications on the codification of the ordinances. Lucas said this is very informative but very time consuming and could take as long as six months. He also said that tile work is being done in the “off” hours at the City Administrative Offices that was budgeted so as to not interfere with city business. Mayor Gary Brown said that it looks like the city will get a $200,000 grant from the Delta Regional Authority for the McArthur Road project, that the football parade would be held this Friday starting at 6:00 from the City Administrative Offices, and he wanted to thank the Salem Methodist Church for their carpet donation to the GED classroom. He also said that if you don’t want the “Your Neighborhood” newspaper thrown on your driveway, or would like to have it delivered, call Jennifer at 573-364-2468. The board approved Resolution #26-2012 that employs Ray Walden as the City of Salem new Economic Development Director, approved the appointment of Bryon Johns as the new Electric Department Superintendent, and they approved sending City Clerk Mary Happel to represent the city at the annual LAGERS meeting on October 25th and 26th. The board then reset the next three alderman meeting dates for Friday, September 21st at 5:00, October 9th at 7:00 and October 22nd at 7:00, all in the City Hall Council Chambers. The board then went into closed session.
Jack Rinne assumes duties of interim general manager after the resignation of Dwayne Cartwright as IECA general manager. The board appointed position will be temporary as a nationwide search for the next executive will take several months. Jack Rinne, a long time veteran with 34 years of service to Intercounty, began with the basics and has moved his way up the ranks and through the various journeyman lineman positions. Since November 2003 he has held the position of Manager of Operations and Maintenance. His present duties will be shared until that time the general manager’s position is permanently filled. Rinne’s duties begin immediately as the position is transitioned from the departing Cartwright. He and his wife, Judy, reside in Licking. He is looking forward to the challenges presented by the executive position of Intercounty Electric Cooperative.

The Salem Lady Tigers pounded out 19 hits and scored 14 runs en route to a 14-5 win over the Houston Lady Tigers Tuesday at the Salem City Park Field. Samantha Parker went 3-3 with three RBI, while Cortney Putman went 3-4 with an RBI and she scored four times to lead the Tigers. Also for Salem, Savannah Hanning had three hits and two RBI and Emily Moser had three hits and drove in a run. Salem is 7-2 on the year and 2-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will be on the road at Cuba Thursday at 4:30.
The Salem Lady Tiger volleyball team lost to Eminence in two sets, 25-7 and 25-5, on Tuesday. The JV also lost in two sets, 25-14 and 25-10. The Lady Tigers are 0-3 on the year and will host Owensville on Thursday.
Jaime Garcia allowed one unearned run over 7 1/3 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the New York Mets, 5-1, in the middle test of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Garcia (4-6) gave up nine hits and struck out five without issuing a walk to pick up his first win since May 16. David Freese and Daniel Descalso both tallied two hits and drove in one run apiece for the Cardinals. Before the game, St. Louis purchased the contract of pitcher Shelby Miller, 19th overall pick in the 2009 Draft, from Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals and Mets play again this afternoon at 12:10 on KSMO Radio.
The Kansas City Royals overpowered the red-hot Texas Rangers, claiming a 6-3 win on Tuesday. Alex Gordon and Johnny Giavotella homered for Kansas City. Jeremy Guthrie (4-3) pitched seven innings and won his fourth straight decision. The Royals and Rangers play again tonight.
