The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday evening at the city hall council chambers. The board heard from Bob Emory about the new vicious dog ordinance and he presented the alderman with a packet of alternative laws that deal with all breeds of dogs that can be vicious. He said that “pit bulls” have become a generic term and there is no such pure breed as many dogs are misidentified, but the purebred closest to the term would be an American Pit Bull Terrier. He said the pit bulls are not born mean, and only 1.8% of pit bulls actually bit anyone in a seven-year national study. Alderman Jim McDaniels said the ordinance is just a starting point for the city. Mayor Brown said that board would review his packet. Michelle Fulton then spoke about having a Youth Night at the Grace Assembly parking lot late this month on a Saturday until midnight with games, BBQ, dunking booth and more. She said she would invite the police and other citizens to mingle with the youth. She said that Grace has not yet given her an answer, but she wanted an alternative location such as the city park just in case, and wanted the blessing of the city. Mayor Brown told Fulton to let him know what Grace Assembly decides before the board will take any action. City Engineer Bill Huffman then discussed the soccer fields and he told the board that if they wanted to go stake off three soccer fields he could, but if you wanted to develop the property correctly, the land needs to be designed on the Auto-Cad computer system so that changes could be made easily in the planning phase, and so that it would be in a proper format for grant submissions. The board authorized the mayor and city attorney to find the best bid available or go with Tim Frevert who made a design for the Old Middle School Property back in the year 2000. He had previously stated that he would charge about $2,500. City of Salem Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs said that the new website was progressing nicely. She also said that Salem was not selected for the second round of DREAM application cities, but that a Salem Revitalization meeting would be held on September 18^th at 6:00. The mayor said that he and City Clerk Mary Happel would be at the Missouri Municipal League Conference from Sunday through Wednesday of next week in Kansas City. He said that Nancy Moenster is working on beautification designs for the Highway 19 “S” curve islands and also the Highway 19 North Roadside Park. The mayor indicated that all the streets are ready for asphalting that had sewer or water line work. The board approved holding Fall Cleanup Week October 8th through the 12^th. On October 6^th, the citywide yard sale will be held as will a recycling collection at 3^rd and Grand that will accept computer monitors, TV’s, tires and car batteries for a charge. Other items like bottles would be accepted for no charge. The mayor said that he has applied for a $15,000 grant so that once a month a collection can be held in Salem. The board approved the appointment of Benny Bryson to the Airport Board and approved sending City Clerk Mary Happel to the LAGERS meeting in Springfield in October. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers dropped their first decision last night as the Eminence Lady Red Wings defeated Salem in three games. The varsity is now 2-1 on the year. The JV also lost and they are 0-3 on the season. The Lady Tigers next action will be in the Willard Tournament over the weekend.

Chris Duncan hit a three-run double in the third as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-2, in the second of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. David Eckstein went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Russell Branyan hit a solo home run for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last five games and are now just one game behind the Chicago Cubs for first place in the NL Central. The team is also a half-game behind Milwaukee for second place in the division. Chicago lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-2, at Wrigley Field, while the Brewers defeated the Astros, 5-3, in Milwaukee. Joel Pineiro (5-3) got the win for giving up two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. St. Louis has won eight of 13 against Pittsburgh this season and will host the Pirates tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

The Cardinals recalled pitcher Brad Thompson from Memphis, designated pitcher Randy Keisler for assignment, and placed outfielder Juan Encarnacion on the 60-day disabled list.

Ian Kinsler finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI as Texas hung on to edge Kansas City, 9-8, in the second of three between the clubs. Jason Botts collected three hits, drove in two and scored once for the Rangers, who have won three of four. Royals’ reliever Leo Nunez (2-3) took the loss. He was charged with three hits and two runs in one-third of an inning in relief of Billy Buckner, who in his major-league debut, was tagged for six runs and seven hits in four innings. Jason Smith hit a three-run homer and drove in four for the Royals, who have dropped three of five. Mike Sweeney had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run, Mark Teahen collected two hits and an RBI, and both Mark Grudzielanek and Esteban German knocked in a run. Kansas City has won five of the eight meetings this year and the two teams will meet again tonight in Texas.

The Kansas City Chiefs claimed linebacker Johnny Baldwin on waivers from Detroit, and added wide receiver Bobby Sippio to the practice squad.

Funeral services for Pauline Maudy Pruitt of Bunker, age 81, will be Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Weese Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Weese Cemetery.

Funeral services for Violet Brooks Taggart Hetzel of Jefferson City formerly of Salem will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the West Fork/Sutterfield Cemetery, Reynolds County. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Graveside services for Devon Cory Daniel Clay of Salem, age 4 days old, will be held Thursday at 12:00 (noon) at the Dry Fork Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Charles Claude Havens of Rolla, age 92, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in rural Phelps County. Memorials are suggested to the Macedonia Cemetery.

A memorial service for James A. Murray of Salem, age 74, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. A short visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
