The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission will conduct at public hearing and meeting regarding the annexation of 1504 Roberts Street, owned by Scott & Wilma McFarland beginning at 6:30 tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then hold their regular meeting beginning at 7:00. During the hearing of persons, the Grace Community Church would like permission to block the street at 600 South Water from the south end of their parking lot to the corner of Water and Franklin Street for the purpose of a community outreach on Sunday, September 16th from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and also on October 31st from 4:00 to 9:00 pm for a church fellowship and community event. The Board will also discuss requested bids for a split load of utility poles. City Attorney Seay will then give his report regarding the public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission. In unfinished business, at the last meeting the Board directed City Administrator Clayton Lucas to get cost figures for the list station on Dilworth Lane, which he will present the findings. Also at a previous meeting, the Board was presented with bids on the Old Middle School property and they requested that Lucas get an appraisal on that property, and those will be presented as well. Also in unfinished business, at a previous meeting the Board Mr. Charles Midyett wanted to know when and if the City could provide water and sewer service to the property owned by the Country Club at the Junction of Highway 72 and “J” Highway as he is interested in purchasing the property. Lucas will present the cost estimate to provide the services to the property. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills and Resolutions, Resolution #26-2012, that authorizes the mayor to execute an employment contract between the city and Ray Walden, will be presented. This resolution is required in order for Walden to be the new Economic Development Director. In new and miscellaneous business, Mayor Brown will appoint Bryon John as Electric Superintendent, with the Board’s approval. The annual meeting of Lagers will be held October 25th and 26th at the University Plaza in Springfield and the City will be sending an employee delegate that is voted on by the employees. The Board will need to appoint an employer delegate to attend this meeting. The Board will then address changing September and October meeting dates. The September 17th Board of Alderman meeting needs to be changed since the Mayor, City Administrator and City Clerk will be attending the MML Conference. The public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission as well as the City of Salem Board of Alderman regular meeting are open to the public.
The Dent County Commissioners held their tax rate hearing Thursday morning for the General Revenue Fund, Road and Bridge Fund, The Senior Citizens Service Fund and the SB40 Fund, which serves the Sheltered Workshop. No one but the commissioners, the Dent County Clerk and media personnel attended the hearing. The current rate for the General Revenue Fund is $0.035 per $100 assessed valuation that generates about $74,000 of revenue. There is a possible maximum levy of $0.102 per $100 assessed valuation. The commissioners voted to leave the rate at $0.035 per $100 assessed valuation. The Road and Bridge Fund tax rate is currently set at $0.255 per $100 assessed valuation and that generates about $400,000 of revenue. The maximum levy amount for Road and Bridge is $0.35 per $100 assessed valuation. The commissioners voted to leave the rate at $0.255 per $100 assessed valuation. The current Senior Citizen Service Fund tax rate was at $0.0466 per $100 assessed valuation and that generated about $70,000 in revenue. The maximum allowed rate is $0.05. The rate recommended by the Senior Citizens Service Fund Board was $0.0467 per $100 assessed valuation. The board approved the recommended rate. The Senate Bill 40 Fund tax rate that benefits the Sheltered Workshop was $0.15 per $100 assessed valuation that generates about $240,000. The maximum tax rate allowed for this fund is $.20 per $100 assessed valuation. The SB40 Fund Board recommended that the rate stay at $0.15 per $100 assessed valuation. The commissioners approved the recommended rate at $0.15 per $100 assessed valuation. The tax rate hearing was then adjourned.

The Salem Lady Tiger volleyball and softball teams will be back in action today. The volleyball team will host Eminence at 6:00 while the softball team will host Houston at 4:30. You’ll be able to hear the Salem Lady Tiger softball game on KSMO Radio and ksmoradio.com. The game will be seen on Fidelity Local 6 TV on a delayed basis this week.
Skip Schumaker went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and Allen Craig collected two hits and knocked in a run as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the New York Mets, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Matt Carpenter drove in a pair of runs and Yadier Molina had an RBI for the Cardinals, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Joe Kelly (5-6) earned the win after allowing just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. The Cardinals and Mets play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.
The Texas Rangers hit five home runs to down the Kansas City Royals by an 8-4 count in the opener of a four-game series. Tony Abreu finished with two hits and three RBI for the Royals, who have dropped three of four. Bruce Chen (10-11) was tagged for six hits and as many runs over six full frames. The Royals and Rangers play again tonight.
Kendial Lawrence rushed for 121 yards and had two 76-yard touchdown runs, Corbin Berkstresser scored twice and Marcus Murphy returned two punts for touchdowns and Missouri pounded Southeastern Louisiana, 62-10, to go to 1-0 on the year. Missouri finished with 452 total net yards, as they will host the sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs Saturday night at 6:30.
