The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, a runaway teen and a fight in progress. On August 29^th at 1:09 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took an envelope containing $617 from a purse in a shopping cart while the victim was shopping at Country Mart. On August 30^th at 5:05 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of South Warfel in reference to a runaway juvenile. The investigation of the report revealed that a 14-year old Salem female had run away from home. She returned home the following day. The report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. At 11:52 that night, an officer was detailed to the 900 block of East First Street in reference to a fight in progress. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem female for disorderly conduct. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On August 31^st at 6:59 in the morning, an officer was sent to the 1500 block of Roberts in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that person or persons unknown took a purse and contents valued at $70 from a white 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening. There were a total of 19 calls in August bringing the total of year-to-date calls to 264. Of the total calls in August, 36.3 % were vehicle related, 14.8 % were structure related and 10.6 % were brush fires. A discussion was held on the disposal of an old fire hose, and it was decided that the District would donate any usable hose to other departments that could use it. Chief Brad Nash reported that Rosenbauer had been in contact with the department and was working to correct all problems on Ladder Truck 81. Rosenbauer will also be extending the warranty on the truck for an additional 18 months. Chief Nash noted that October is Fire Safety Month. Nash then held a discussion on trucks 80, 87 and 86 and asked the Board to reassign the duties and status of the trucks to get the best possible use from them. The Board agreed that due to the age and condition of the trucks, the status of the trucks should be changed and asked Chief Nash to go ahead with the change. Chief Nash reported on Engine 82 and after the discussion, the Board asked Nash to get back to the Board at the next meeting on what the value is and the possible alternatives for the vehicle. Chief Nash along with Liz Gruendel will be working on the USDA grant for the station improvements. The Board then reviewed policies for the District and changed, deleted or amended policies #7, #13 and #14. The Board then discussed the billing of insurance companies on vehicle incidents. The board asked Chief Nash to go ahead and implement the billing and report back at the next meeting. The next regular monthly meeting for the Dent County Fire Protection District will be held on Tuesday, October 7^th beginning at 6:00 pm.

The Salem Tiger Football Parade will be held Friday, September 5^th beginning at 6:00 pm. Businesses, clubs, churches and other groups are encouraged to participate. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers opened their season Tuesday with a straight set win over St. James, 25-17 and 26-24. The JV was also victorious over St. James by the score of 25-16 and 25-14. The Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Pacific tonight starting at 5:00.

The Lady Softball Tigers are scheduled to be at Vienna today for softball action beginning at 5:00, weather permitting.

Adam Dunn's RBI double capped a two-run ninth inning as Arizona recovered from a three-run deficit to nip St. Louis, 4-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Stephen Drew greeted Chris Perez (2-2) with a leadoff triple. David Eckstein lofted a soft fly to short right, then Conor Jackson bounced a single through the drawn-in infield to tie the game. Dunn stepped in and laced a double to the wall in right, which scored Jackson easily ahead of a relay throw for the game-winning score. Troy Glaus hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who have dropped five of six. Kyle Lohse turned in six frames of five-hit shutout ball, fanning seven for St. Louis. He also finished 2-for-2 and collected an RBI double. The Cardinals are 5 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the wild card lead and they have the day off today.

Wednesday night's game between the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 4:10 p.m. The second game will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Dana Eveland (8-8) will pitch the opener for Oakland against Brian Bannister (7-14). The second game will feature Dan Meyer (0-3) taking the mound for the A's and Kyle Davies (5-6) pitching for the Royals.
