An unusual incident happened Saturday afternoon at the Flat Nasty ATV Park off of Route ZZ near Jadwin that took the life of a young man. According to the coroner’s report, 26-year old Adam Drew Carwile of Loose Creek, Missouri, was a spectator at the Flat Nasty ATV Park when a “Rock Climbing Truck” dislodged a boulder about 3 ½ feet in diameter. The rock rounded down a steep incline and struck Carwile pinning him between the rock and a tree. Carwile was pronounced dead at 2:05 by Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson at the Jadwin Fire Station. After the autopsy at the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office, his body will be sent to the Morton Funeral Home.

An accident happened at 7:25 Sunday evening in Iron County on Highway 32 about four miles east of Bixby. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Harley Davidson Motorcycle driven by 60-year old James Gray of Salem, ran off the roadway and overturned. Gray suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Barnes Hospital in St.Louis. The motorcycle sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene by Abney’s Towing of Viburnum. Gray was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

An accident happened at 3:10 Sunday afternoon in Iron County on Route Y about a half mile north of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Volkswagon was being driven northbound by 65-year old David Barnard of St. Ann. Also traveling northbound was 17-year old Ryan DeClue of Viburnum on a bicycle. Barnard attempted to pass the bicycle when the bike turned into the path of the Volkswagon. DeClue suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. There was minor damage to the VW and extensive damage to the bicycle.

An accident happened at 12:20 Saturday afternoon in Dent County on Route H about a half mile west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 Dodge van driven by 52-year old Rhonda Jones of Salem was making a left turn into a private drive from Route H when a 2003 Buick driven by 70-year old Melva Schafer of Salem struck Jones in the rear. Both vehicles came to rest on the left side of the roadway. Jones suffered minor injuries and was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital by EMS. Schafer suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital by EMS. The 1992 Dodge van sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by the owner. The 2003 Buick sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers towing of Salem.

An accident happened at 10:30 Saturday morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 about a mile and a half south of Cherryville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1985 Honda Motorcycle driven by 27-year old William Hassler of Salem failed to negotiate a curve and overturned. Hassler suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to St. Johns Hospital in St.Louis. The motorcycle sustained moderate damage and was taken from the scene by a family member. Hassler was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board will hear from Bob Emory and Rebecca Flett concerning the new vicious dog ordinance, and hear from Michelle Fulton concerning a Youth Night at Grace Assembly Parking Lot sometime in September until midnight. After the consent agenda, the board will get a report from City Engineer Bill Huffman on the soccer fields. After each alderman discusses miscellaneous business, Mayor Gary Brown will give his comments. In New Business, the board will discuss adding another member to the Airport Board, discuss fall clean up week to be held October 8th through the 12th, discuss sending a representative from the city to the annual LAGERS meeting and then discuss bills to be paid. The board may then go into closed session to discuss personnel, real estate or litigation. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will travel to Eminence to face the Lady Red Wings at 6:00 this evening. The Lady Tigers are 2-0 going into the contest.

Chase Daniel threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Missouri Tigers to an exciting 40-34 victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini in non-conference action from the Edward Jones Dome Saturday. Daniel connected on 37-of-54 passing for the Tigers to make up for the fact that the rushing attack accounted for a mere 70 yards on 33 attempts on the day. The Illini was paced by running back Rashard Mendenhall who posted a pair of scoring runs on 11 carries in the setback.

Jack Wilson equaled a career-high with four hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs to power Pittsburgh to an 11-0 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. Ian Snell (9-11) threw seven shutout innings to win for the second time in 11 outings. He allowed five hits, walked five and fanned four. Former Pirate Kip Wells (6-16) was pounded for 10 hits and six runs over 3 1/3 innings to drop his third consecutive start for the Cardinals, who had their three-game winning streak broken. St. Louis remained two games behind division-leading Chicago in the NL Central standings as the Cubs lost, 11-3, at home to Los Angeles Monday afternoon. The Cards and Pirates play again tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion will miss the remainder of the season because of a serious eye injury. Encarnacion was struck in the eye by a foul ball while in the on-deck circle during Friday's game against Cincinnati. He was taken to a hospital for further evaluation and tests revealed multiple fractures of his left eye socket. The Cardinals released a statement Saturday saying that Encarnacion will remain hospitalized for "continued observation, evaluation and treatment."

Zack Greinke pitched five scoreless frames and Alex Gordon drove in four runs, leading the Kansas City Royals past the Texas Rangers, 8-1, in the opener of a three-game series. Greinke (6-5) scattered five hits and struck out four without a walk for the Royals, who have won five of their last eight. Gordon and Ross Gload both finished 3-for-6, with Gload homering and knocking in a pair of runs in victory. The two teams play again tonight.

Funeral services for Pauline Maudy Pruitt of Bunker, age 81, will be Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Weese Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Weese Cemetery.

Funeral services for Violet Brooks Taggart Hetzel of Jefferson City formerly of Salem will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the West Fork/Sutterfield Cemetery, Reynolds County. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Graveside services for Devon Cory Daniel Clay of Salem, age 4 days old, will be held Thursday at 12:00 (noon) at the Dry Fork Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Charles Claude Havens of Rolla, age 92, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in rurul Phelps County. Memorials are suggested to the Macedonia Cemetery.

Memorial services for James A. Murray of Salem, age 74, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Kingdon Hall of Jehovah Witness. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
