Due to bad weather, the pavement replacement project along Route J in Dent County has been rescheduled to start on Monday, September 8th. The project involves replacing the pavement on Route J (McArthur) from Highway 72 to Third Street. The roadway will be closed to all traffic during the length of the project, and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route around the work area. This project, which is a cooperative effort between the Missouri Department of Transportation and the City of Salem, is scheduled for completion in early November. Roadwork continues in our area. In Dent County, roadway resurfacing is underway on Highway 19 between Highway 32 and Route KK in Shannon County. The contractor will install additional embankment in preparation of the new shoulders being added to Highway 19 this week. One lane will be open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area. The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Thursday, August 21st at 2:43 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation revealed that an unidentified male left the store with merchandise valued at $27.15. Then at 8:30 that night, an officer was dispatched to Walmart reference to a shoplifter.  Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued $55.80. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That night at 9:20 pm, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of East Acuff in reference to a domestic disturbance.  Investigation of the report revealed a 32-year old Salem male had assaulted a 29-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for domestic assault and disorderly conduct. He was issued summonses to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. Late that night at 11:05 pm, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. Investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem female for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Friday, August22nd at 3:24 pm, an officer responded to the Casey's General Store located on Highway 32 East in reference to theft of fuel. Investigation of the report revealed the driver of a green pickup truck pumped $20.00 in fuel and left without paying. Later that day at 5:15 pm, an officer was detailed to Phil-Mart located on Missouri Highway 19 South in reference to theft of fuel.  Investigation of the report revealed the driver of a maroon Buick Regal pumped $22.98 in fuel and left without paying. On Saturday, August 23rd at 9:54 pm, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation.  Investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempt to distribute amphetamine.  He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. The Salem Community Center @ the Armory will soon begin installing the memorial brick/pavers that have been purchased by community members and businesses over the past year.  For a $200 donation, you can engrave your message on a paver, which will become a permanent part of the Community Center exterior landscape. Pavers will be located in a walkway around the front and east side of the Armory. You may personalize your brick with a name, a special date, a quote, or the name of your company or club. An Armory brick makes a fitting gift for any current or former resident of Salem and Dent County or memorial for a loved one. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball game that was scheduled yesterday at Ava was postponed due to wet grounds with no makeup date being announced yet.

The Salem JV football game with Cabool yesterday was cancelled due to wet grounds. It will NOT be rescheduled.

Adam Wainwright pitched into the seventh inning and drove in three runs, and the Cardinals extended their lead in the National League Central with a 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Peter Bourjos had two hits, knocked in a run and scored twice for the Cardinals, who moved two games clear of Milwaukee for first place and four in front of third-place Pittsburgh. The Brewers lost to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Tuesday night. Wainwright (16-9) gave up seven hits, three of them homers, and yielded four runs over six-plus frames. He snapped a personal two-game skid and helped the Cardinals win their fourth straight contest. The Cardinals and Pirates play again today and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 12:10.

An RBI single from Salvador Perez in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference, as the Kansas City Royals clipped the Texas Rangers by a 2-1 count in the middle test of a three-game series. Norichika Aoki doubled twice and knocked in the other run for the Royals, who remained atop the AL Central by a half-game over Detroit, which won again at Cleveland earlier on Tuesday. Jason Frasor (4-1) retired two batters in the eighth inning, while Aaron Crow tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his third save. Jeremy Guthrie went the first seven, giving up eight hits and one run. The Royals and Rangers play again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Leah Ann Hedrick of Salem, age 22, will be held at 11:00 Thursday at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Leah Hedrick.
