An accident happened Wednesday afternoon in Dent County at 5:15 on Private Lane 315 about four miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 21-year old James H. Farho of Salem, was riding a 2002 Honda ATV northbound when he lost control on the gravel roadway. The ATV ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and ejected Farho into the fence. Farho suffered moderate injuries and was taken by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The ATV sustained moderate damages and was left at the scene.

An accident happened at 9:30 Wednesday night in Iron County on Route KK about a fifth of a mile south of Highway 32, about five miles from Bixby. According to the highway patrol report, 17-year old Sarah J. Dotson of Bixby was driving a 2001 Grand Am northbound when she failed to negotiate a curve to the right. The Grand Am skidded off the right side of the roadway, traveled down a steep embankment and overturned. Dotson suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by an ambulance. The Grand Am was totaled and removed from the scene by Blackies Towing of Viburnum. Dotson was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a burglary, leaving the scene of an accident, thefts and a disturbance. On Friday, August 28^th at 7:00 a.m. an officer was detailed to 215 East Fourth Street in reference to a burglary and theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had entered the Fourth Street Mall sometime during the night, without permission and took an undetermined amount of cigarettes and cell phones. At 2:20 p.m. that afternoon, an officer was contacted in reference to a leaving the scene of an accident report. The report revealed the victims vehicle, a 2001 Chevy Malibu was parked in the 400 block of East Hunt and was struck by an unknown vehicle, which left the scene. On Monday, August 31^st at 5:00 p.m. an officer was sent to Brady Lane in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had removed a “lion” statue concrete yard ornament from the residence. At  8:00 p.m. that evening, an officer was dispatched to 901 South Washington, the Dollar General Store in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown removed a pink in color ladies wallet and it’s contents from a parked and unlocked vehicle while parked at Dollar General Store. At 9:45 p.m. that same night, an officer while on patrol observed an individual running from Wal-Mart. Contact was made with the individual and investigation revealed he had stolen 2 video games valued at $39.92 from Wal-Mart, which led to the arrest of the 17-year old Salem man who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, September 1^st at 1:30 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 700 block of William Avenue in reference to a disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem man for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated. Anyone with information on the burglary or thefts, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police at 729-4242.

Missouri’s highest court recognized that Missouri is giving children, no matter where they live, an equal opportunity for a great education based on the funding formula passed in 2005. The Supreme Court found that the formula, which is based on students’ needs rather than local wealth, has a rational basis. The Supreme Court also affirmed what Judge Callahan did more than two years ago, in finding that in Missouri, we exceed the Constitutional requirement of spending more than 25% of the state’s total budget on elementary and secondary education. This year, the total is more the $4.4 billion dollars.

The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will be closed Monday, September 7^th due to Labor Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, September 8^th.

The Salem Volleyball Tigers defeated the St. James Lady Tigers Tuesday night in three games. Salem lost the first game, 23-25, then won the second game 25-23 and the third contest, 25-17. Alayna Sellers led Salem with eight kills while Kristy Bermudez had seven kills and 15 assists. The JV also defeated St. James 26-24 and 25-10. Salem will be home tonight to face Pacific starting at 5:00 at the SHS gym.

Chris Carpenter threw six strong innings to win his 10th consecutive decision as the Cardinals blew out Milwaukee, 10-3, at Busch Stadium. Carpenter (15-3), who leads the National League with a 2.28 ERA, hasn't lost over his last 12 starts. He gave up eight hits and three runs against the Brewers. Skip Schumaker went 4-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice for the NL Central leaders. Albert Pujols added a two-run double for the Cardinals, who have won five in a row and nine of their last 10 games. Yadier Molina had three hits and drove in two runs for the Cardinals, while Rick Ankiel added a pair of hits and scored twice. The Cards go for the sweep this afternoon at 12:55 on KSMO.

Landon Powell hit his first career grand slam as part of a five-run second inning, and the Oakland Athletics crushed the Kansas City Royals, 10-4, in the finale of a three-game set. Mike Jacobs had a solo homer for the Royals, who have two wins over their last six games. Alberto Callaspo had a triple and an RBI in defeat, while David DeJesus and Josh Anderson had an RBI apiece. Brian Bannister (7-12) took the loss after giving up three runs on as many hits in just 1 1/3 innings of work due to shoulder fatigue. The Royals have the day off today.

Funeral Mass for William R. “Bob” Cottrell of Steelville, age 71, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Steelville. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Leasburg. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Cemetery Fund. Graveside services for Ronald Henson of Rolla, age 58, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Pilot Know cemetery in Vida, Missouri. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Funeral services for Edward Simpson of St. James, age 78, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Betty June Dees of Salem, age 83, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be private.

Funeral services for Helen Deniszuk of St. Charles, age 90, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer Association. 

Funeral services for Lenzy E. Smith, Sr. of Licking, age 80, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Rock Springs Baptist Church in Licking. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking with a Masonic service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Rock Springs Cemetery.

Graveside services for Garry Botkin of Bunker, age 71, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Crossville Cemetery near Bunker. Visitation will Friday after 4:30 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Crossville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Bunker Alumni Fund.
