The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday evening in the city hall council chambers. Prior to the regular meeting in closed session, the board appointed Nancy Wisdom as the city attorney to replace Mark Weaver. In the hearing of persons, Pam Nash of the Salem Residential Care Center informed the city that they would be having a motorcycle poker run on September 20^th. The mayor said that an extra officer or two would be on duty for the event. J.D. Norris then discussed a ticket that he received about tall grass on property that he owned. He said that his grandchild found the ticket on the porch and wanted to know why he didn’t get a registered warning letter. The mayor said that repeat nuisance violators are not getting the 30-day warning letter anymore; they are just being ticketed. Norris then exclaimed that the property location was not on the ticket and the Mayor asked Norris if he knew which property it was for and he said he did. Norris then left the meeting. Laurie Walker then submitted a petition to the board with about 200 signatures from citizens wanting the city to enforce the ordinances for un-kept property. The mayor informed Walker and the crowd that since 2007, the city has or worked with citizens in removing 25 dangerous structures and repairing four buildings. The city did apply for a demolition grant, but it was not awarded in 2006. The board approved the consent agenda that showed an increase in sales tax over last year of about $40,000 and year-to date of about $56,000. The mayor and City Engineer Bill Huffman then decided that since only one bid was received for the concrete work on Askins Street that the city crews would just take care of it. Alderman McDaniels stated that he wanted representatives from Fidelity Cable and Ameren UE to be at the next meeting to discuss problems with their service. Alderman Jackson asked about the timers for the ball field lights and the mayor said that they will now being going off at about 10:15 to 10:30 at the latest. Mayor Brown stated that the Missouri Career Center is sending employees to clean up storm ditches from Route J to Highway 32, the ditch from Franklin to Highway 32, and the ditch at Jack and Hunt Streets. The mayor said that grants have been applied for the new style band radios and a recycling trailer. He said that the manholes are now being mapped and that the Community Betterment Judges will be in town on September 16^th. He said that the 12^th Tiger Parade will be held Friday at 6:00 from the City Administration Offices to the High School Football Field. The mayor said that September 13^th would be David Plank Day in the city and county to salute the artists work in drawing birds. He will also have a display at the ONCRC and the Salem Arts Council sponsors it. The board heard a request for annexation from the Salem R-80 School Board for their new administration building at the corner of Route J and Dilworth Lane. A public hearing and Planning and Zoning Commission approval is needed and will be scheduled for October 6^th. The Fall Clean-up Week will be held October 6^th through October 10^th, the week after the Fall Community Wide Yard Sale. The board postponed making a decision on sending a representative to the annual LAGERS meeting in Springfield in October. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

The Salem 9th grade football team ended up in a tie with the Willow Springs J.V. Bears on Tuesday night. Justin Moore scored in the third quarter on a 65-yard run to put Salem up 6-0.  Willow scored with less than two minutes to go in the game but the two-point conversion was stopped by the Tigers to hold it to a 6-6 tie. It was the first game of the year for the freshmen who will play Ava next Monday.

Troy Glaus, Yadier Molina and Felipe Lopez homered off Yusmeiro Petit to carry St. Louis over the struggling Diamondbacks, 8-2, sending Arizona to its seventh loss in nine contests. Adam Wainwright (8-3) doubled in two runs and had seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings to win his third straight decision. He gave up three hits and a run. St. Louis' Chris Carpenter made his first relief appearance since the 2000 season, throwing the seventh inning. The Cardinals snapped a four-game skid and will try to win the rubber match of the three-game set Wednesday afternoon at 2:20. Tuesday's triumph also snapped a seven-game slide for the Cardinals at Chase Field. The Cardinals are 5 1/2 games behind Milwaukee in the wild card race. Cardinal’s outfielder Joe Mather will be out the remainder of the season due to a broken bone in his left wrist. Mather suffered the injury while trying to check his swing in the third inning of Monday's game. He will have surgery on the wrist this week.

Billy Butler hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 5-2 win over the Oakland Athletics in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Zack Greinke pitched seven strong innings and earned the win for the Royals, who have won two of their last three on the heels of a four-game skid. Greinke (10-9) allowed two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Ryan Shealy added a solo home run in the victory. The two teams play again tonight in Kansas City.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers picked up their first win of the season on Monday against St. James without getting a hit. Salem won 19-3 and received 23 walks in the game from the St. James pitchers. The game only lasted five innings. There was no JV game due to the lack of St. James players. The Lady Tigers were to play Ava yesterday.
