The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6303, 6305, 6485 and 6490. Purcell said that brush cutting was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2400, 5080 and 5085; and roadwork would be performed on county road 4180. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4400, 4403, 4405, 4435 and 5325. Larson also stated that material would be hauled and a culvert would be installed on Dent County Road 4050; and brush would be cut on county road 2210. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed on Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day. Skiles also reported that he would be attending a Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation meeting at the MRPC in St. James on Tuesday morning. Matt Lloyd from Fabick was in attendance with questions for the Commissioners in preparing bids for two graders. At the last meeting, a motion was made and approved by all, to solicit bids for two graders for the Road and Bridge Department. Bids are due by September 19th and will be read at 10:00 am that morning. Also at the last meeting, Larry Sensintaffer a representative to the Senior Citizen Board came in and recommended that Charlene Turner and Vickie Ruble be appointed as members of the Board to fill vacancies. The Dent County Commission approved those appointments. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Thursday, September 8th at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 am, and that meeting is open the public.

The Jr. Livestock Committee met and discussed the 2012 4-H/FFA Livestock program. After lengthy consideration, there were several motions made and unanimously passed by committee members. The first will be a change to the dates and location of the 2012 livestock show. It will be held August 1-4, 2012 and will NOT be held at The Commons. A steering committee will be appointed with the power to explore alternate location options and report back to the Jr. Livestock Committee. The Jr. Livestock Committee also appointed J.T. Fleener, Ted Cunningham and Rusty Howard to the steering committee. The point of contact will be the Dent County Extension office. The Jr. Livestock Committee also approved some other changes. Those changes include that livestock exhibitors may show multiple species of animals, but may sell only one market animal or ham at the market sale, with the exception of exhibitors with a live show grand champion. Then the exhibitor may sell another market animal or ham in addition to the grand champion market animal or ham. The committee also approved that the beginning weight for a hog may not exceed 100 pounds and that the beginning weight for a lamb may not exceed 70 pounds.

An accident occurred at 4:12 Wednesday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway 68 about 10 miles south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Yamaha Vstar driven by 57-year old Darrel Beebe of St. Joseph lost control of the Yamaha going around a curve. The Yamaha overturned, slid across the center-line and struck a 2001 Chevrolet 2500 driven by 50-year old James Crawford of Salem, and then came to rest in the roadway. Beebe suffered serious injuries and was Air Evac’d to St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. The Yamaha was totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing of St. James. The Chevrolet 2500 sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and a review of the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board will review and pay bills, and then discuss the 2011 budget. There will be a calendar review and the monthly reimbursement report. In old business the Board will address propane bids and waste oil. In new business will be the start of the Chief’s yearly evaluation. Chief Brad Nash will then update the Board with his report on various issues. The Board will then set their next meeting for October 5th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the meeting will then be adjourned.

The Salem Football Tigers will host the Houston Tigers tonight in SCA play stating at 7:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. Albert Pujols went 4-for-4 with two home runs, including a grand slam, as the St. Louis Cardinals earned a 8-4 win to complete a three-game sweep of the NL Central-leading Brewers. Matt Holliday hit the 200th homer of his career and Rafael Furcal added a solo shot for the Cardinals, who have won four straight and six of seven. Brandon Dickson allowed three runs on six hits in his first major-league start, but lasted just 3 1/3 innings. Octavio Dotel (1-2) struck out five in 2 2/3 frames of scoreless relief to secure the win. The Cards start a three game series with Cincinnati tonight. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Tiger Football.

Jeff Francoeur hit a two-run homer and doubled in a run during the seventh inning, helping the Royals come back to beat the Tigers, 11-8, in the finale of a four-game series. Eric Hosmer also homered and Johnny Giavotella went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Kansas City, which managed a split of the set. The Royals trailed by two entering the seventh, but scored four runs in the inning to take the lead for good.  Kansas City will host Cleveland this weekend.

Thaddeus Lewis completed 12-of-15 passes for 164 yards and starter Sam Bradford threw for 133 yards and a touchdown on 7-of-11 passing to lead the St.Louis Rams to a 24-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the final preseason tuneup for both teams. The Rams finished the preseason with a perfect 4-0 record.

Vic So'oto picked off a Tyler Palko pass and returned it 33 yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, lifting the Green Bay Packers past the Kansas City Chiefs, 20-19. Matt Cassel completed 15-of-17 passes for 129 yards and threw a touchdown to Dexter McCluster, who totaled 66 yards from scrimmage. The Chiefs preseason record finished at 0-4.

The Missouri Tigers will host the Miami of Ohio Redhawks in their opening game starting at 10:00 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Colon “Butch” Moore III of Steelville, age 54, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Joseph “Joe” Leslie Busch of Edgar Springs, age 75, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the DeVerter Funeral Home Cayuga, Indiana. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Miller Cemetery in Lodi, Indiana. Memorials are suggest to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Funeral servives for Tammy Lynn Bedford of Viburnum, age 30, will be held Thursday at 11:00 in the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 in the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel in Viburnum. Internment will be in the Sam Crocker Cemetary. Memorials may be made to the family.

Funeral services for Nelda Chrystell Forbes of Rolla, age 74, will be held Sunday 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Landmark Baptist Church.
