The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their tax levy meeting Tuesday night. Mike Godi was sworn in by the Board Secretary Dave Wells as the newly appointed board member. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, a discussion was held on the warranty for the new guttering and after discussion a motion was made to proceed with the guttering project and the motion carried all for. Also discussed was the replacement of the garage doors downstairs. A motion was made and carried with one nay vote to go ahead and replace the doors and add openers. During the hearing of persons, the Jadwin Fire Department was in attendance to discuss the formation of a district and the possibilities thereof. After discussion was held and it was decided that many questions needed to be answered and possibly a committee needed to be formed to move forward. The Dent County Fire Protection District agreed to help and look further into the matter. In new business, a discussion was held on the tax levy and the effect on the budget. After a board discussion, a motion was made to change the tax rate from the current $.2260 per $100 assessed valuation to the new tax rate allowed by law of $.2273 per $100 assessed valuation.  A roll call vote was taken on the tax rate and there was one no vote. The motion carried. Meeting was held for one hour with no one from the public in attendance. The board then set the date for their next regular scheduled meeting for Tuesday, September 7^th @ 6:00 PM at the Dent County Fire Protection District building. The meeting was then adjourned.

Ozark National Scenic Rivers invites the public to attend the grand opening ceremony of the new Visitor Contact Station at the Pulltite Campground this Friday at 6:00 p.m.  Park Superintendent, Reed Detring, will cut the ribbon officially opening the facility and the Current River Bluegrass Band will provide the musical entertainment. Bring your requests, a blanket, or lawn chair. The new facility houses restrooms, showers, ranger offices, and Visitor Contact Station where the public can obtain park information, view displays, and borrow a fishing rod or binoculars. In the children’s area, youth can check out a nature book from the library, discover the animal puppets, or create a craft project. 

Labor Day weekend is fast approaching. Many families will plan one last special outing to mark the end of summer. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists to expect a change in traffic patterns during the Labor Day weekend. The Labor Day counting period will begin at 6:00 p.m. this Friday and end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 6^th. The Patrol, along with local law enforcement, will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), as well as 10-Mile Trooper projects during this holiday weekend. The 10-Mile Trooper projects are scheduled for portionsof U.S. Highways 36 and 60, and Interstates 29, 35, 44, 55, and 70, in an effort to increase awareness and safety. If alcohol is part of your Labor Day holiday celebration, don’t drink and drive. Getting arrested could be the least of your concerns. There are court costs, medical bills, or perhaps jail time. If you kill or injure someone, you’ll pay a price for the rest of your life. If you choose to drink this Labor Day holiday, choose a designated driver. Last year, eight people were killed and 487 persons were injured in 1,133 traffic crashes occurring during the Labor Day holiday counting period. That is one person killed or injured every 9.5 minutes. Over the past five years (2005-2009), 60 persons were killed and 2,482 were injured in Labor Day holiday crashes. A correction of the details to an accident previously reported in the YWT Wednesday. An accident occurred at 5:55 Saturday evening in Dent County at the intersection of Highway 32/72. According to the Salem Police report, a 2007 Chevrolet driven by Paula Stidham of Salem was stopped at the stop sign on Highway 72 at Highway 32. She started making a left turn onto Highway 32 and made contact with a 1987 Nissan driven by Howard Johns of Salem that was traveling westbound on Highway 32 approaching Highway 72. The occupants in the Chevrolet were transported by private means to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment. We apologize for the error.
