The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a stolen vehicle, theft, disorderly conduct, property damage and assault. On Friday, August 27
th the Salem Police Department was contacted by the Springfield Police Department. The 1999 Ford Escort reported stolen back on August 12
th from the Burger King parking lot in Salem, was recovered in Springfield, Missouri, and was found abandoned. At 11:40 p.m. that night, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that earlier in the evening, a person or persons unknown entered into a residence in the 400 block of North Park and took without permission a safe and it’s contents. On Saturday, August 28
th at 12:15 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 600 block of South Jackson in reference to stealing from a motor vehicle. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took from a 1999 Chevrolet an IPOD touch and an FM transmitter valued at $250. At 3:00 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Ray Lane in reference to a disorderly subject. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem man for disorderly conduct and property damage. He was issued summons to appear in court and was released. Then at 7:50 that evening, an officer responded to the 600 block of West Gibbs in reference to an individual driving through yards. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 51-year old Salem man for driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving, property damage and assault. He was issued summons to appear in court and was incarcerated. Anyone with any information regarding the theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The competition for homeland security grant dollars in 2010 was tough. Some $305,000 were available, and some 23 agencies submitted over $800,000 in requests. It was not quite as bad as in 2008 when the requests topped $1.6 million. The Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee (HSOC) recommended and the state Homeland Security Advisory Committee (HSAC) has approvedthese projects for funding: City of Rolla Homeland Security Response Team for hazmat response suits for $26,400; Meramec Regional Planning Commission to continue staff planning, coordination and support of the interoperability committee, the development of volunteers and shelters, sub-committee support and badging services for $54,030; Region I Public Health and American Red Cross for a shelter generator to be owned by the City of Rolla for the First Baptist Church in Rolla for $54,000; American Red Cross for Cambro equipment and two laptops for $1,286; Dent County Commission for additional funds to complete the installation of three-phase generator to be located at Oak Grove Baptist Church, which is designated as a Red Cross shelter/disaster center for Dent County ($46,003 was awarded in 2009) for $24,000; and the Rolla Police Department for portable radios for $26,000.
On June 11th, several local high school juniors representing Intercounty Electric joined up with 76 other Missouri students to participate in the annual Missouri Electric Youth Tour to Washington, DC. Tarynn Huitt from Salem, Chelsea Smith from Licking, Hanan Southard from St. James and Jenna Light from Rolla were among those in our area. The six-day tour provided an action-filled week for these high school students, offering them opportunities to learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, community service and today’s pressing issues. Each year, Intercounty sponsors one high school junior from each of the nine high schools within the co-op’s service territory. An accident occurred on Saturday, August 28th at 5:55 in the evening at the intersection of Highway 72 and 32 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 1987 Nissan driven by Howard Johns of Salem was attempting to make a left turn and made contact with a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo driven by Paula Stidham of Salem. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage. Occupants from the Chevrolet Aveo were transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment by private means.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers varsity beat St. James in two games Tuesday night to start their season as they won 25-8 and 25-17. The JV was not as fortunate as they lost in three games. They won the first game, 25-17, lost the second game, 25-10, and lost the third game, 25-23. The Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Pacific Thursday night.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers attempt for two wins in a row came up short as Ava scored twice in the bottom of the 7th inning to beat Salem, 14-13. Samantha Parker had a home run for Salem who falls to 1-5 with the loss. The JV won their game with Ava, 12-5.
The City of Salem Park and Recreation Department will be holding FINAL soccer program signups in the front room of the Salem Freedom Activity Center from 4:00 to 6:00 Thursday and Friday.
Wandy Rodriguez combined with three other pitchers in a three-hit shutout as the Houston Astros blanked the reeling St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, in the second of three games. Chris Carpenter (14-5) was tagged for three runs and six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over seven innings for the Cardinals who have lost four straight games. St. Louis now sits seven games back of Cincinnati for first place in the NL Central as the Reds beat Milwaukee on Tuesday. The Cardinals play the Astros this afternoon at 12:45 on KSMO.
The St. Louis Cardinals announced Tuesday that pitcher Jeff Suppan will be activated from the 15-day disabled list today in order to make the start against Houston. Suppan has been on the DL since August 11 with a a sore groin. Also, the team announced that outfielder Nick Stavinoha and catcher Matt Pagnozzi will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis today.
Pinch-runner Willie Bloomquist scored the game-winning run on Alexi Ogando's wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth, as the Kansas City Royals snuck past the Texas Rangers, 10-9, in the second test of a three-game series from Kauffman Stadium. Alex Gordon drove in three runs for the Royals. Jai Miller hit a two-run double for the victors. Starter Sean O'Sullivan struggled through five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. Joakim Soria (1-2) tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the win. The Royals and Rangers play again tonight.
The Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Lance Long. Long appeared in seven games, starting one, for the Chiefs last season. He caught 20 passes for 178 yards.
St. Louis' Jean Carlos De La Cruz and Delvi Rodriguez are among three Minor League players who have received 50-game suspensions. The Commissioner's Office announced Monday that each tested positive for a metabolite of Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Funeral services for Glen “Sonny” Gillam of Sullivan, age 63, will be held today at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville.
Cremation arrangements for Amber Jo Mathis of Salem, age 10, are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the family of Amber Mathis.
