The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that a crew would be in Bunker cleaning out two bridges. He said that another crew would be patching chip and seal at various locations in the county this week. Purcell stated that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5060, 5070, 5115, 5530, 5550 and 6500. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2200 and 2240, while rock will be added and grading done on Dent County Road 4290. Larson went on to say that brush cutting was going to be done on Dent County Roads 3090 and 3100. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he met with Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash Friday as well as John Briggs from US Wireless for training on the county’s new satellite phone at the firehouse. During the training, it was discovered that the phone had a programming error and it had to be taken back for calibration by Briggs. The phone is only to be used in an emergency when other communications are down. The annual cost of the phone is $840 a year, and Skiles said that the city of Salem would share some of the costs. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she is receiving tax levies from the taxing entities but is still short a few. The levies MUST be submitted by today to the state. The commissioners then reviewed suggested revisions to the policy handbook. At the last meeting, Dent County Coroner Gina White submitted a letter removing Phillip Giacomelli as appointee to the Law Enforcement Restitution Fund and he is now serving as Deputy Coroner. White has appointed Herbert Jones to the Law Enforcement Restitution Board. Also at the last meeting, the county voted on June 25
th to be a part of a multi-county application through the MRPC for economic stimulus money that will address homelessness with Phelps County the leading county. The Community Action Agency would like to have Wayne County the lead county, but the commissioners voted to leave Phelps County the leading county. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that special enforcement projects will be conducted during September within the six-county Troop I area. DWI saturations will be conducted in Crawford and Dent counties, and a DWI sobriety checkpoint will be held in Pulaski County. A hazardous moving enforcement operation will be conducted in Pulaski and Phelps counties, and a MCSAP-SAFETE operation, which emphasizes the enforcement of commercial motor vehicle laws, will take place in Phelps County. Thus far in 2009, Troop I has had substantially fewer traffic fatalities than this date last year.
Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that Troop I officers will be involved in a program designed to provide maximum manpower during the peak travel days of the Labor Day weekend on Interstate 44. The program, known as the “10-mile Trooper Project”, is designed to provide a trooper at least every 10 miles on designated highways within the state. The objective of this operation within the six-county Troop I area is to reduce traffic crashes by vigorously enforcing all traffic offenses and to be in close proximity of motorists who may need assistance on I-44. Captain Kenley stated that troopers would be observing a zero tolerance policy for motorists who are stopped for a traffic violation and are not wearing a seat belt. Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer trips for many of our families and all Missourians are urged to be extra careful and to obey the rules of the road to make this weekend both enjoyable and safe.
An accident occurred at 8:00 am Monday morning in Texas County about ten miles east of Licking on Slabtown Road. According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 Chrysler Fifth Avenue driven by 29-year old Justin Williams of Licking was traveling east on Slabtown Road. The Chrysler slid out of control on loose gravel and struck a 1989 Kaiser dump truck driven by 72-year old Kenneth Duncan of Licking. Williams and a passenger, 30-year old Kelly Williams both suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to the Texas County Hospital. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler Fifth Avenue was totaled and removed from the scene by the owner. The dump truck sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Too many fumbles hurt the Salem 9th grade Football Tigers as they fell to the Willow Springs 9th grade by the score of 38-0. Salem was lead in rushing by Dusty Jarvis with 18 carries for 62 yards. Jake Arzt had 40 yards on 12 carries for the second leading rusher. Their next game will be next Monday afternoon at 4:30 against Ava at the Salem High School Football Field.
The Salem JV Football Tigers shutout the St. Clair JV yesterday by the score of 14-0 at Salem. They will next play Ava Monday night at 6:00 at the SHS Field.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers lost to the St. James Lady Tigers yesterday by the score of 19-15. Salem falls to 1-3 on the year and will host Ava today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Field. There was no JV game last night.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers start their regular season tonight as they will be at St. James to face the Lady Tigers starting at 5:30.
The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off and they will face the Milwaukee Brewers tonight starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
John Bale's fielding gaffe on Adam Kennedy's slow roller back to the mound in the sixth inning proved to be the difference, as two runs scored and the Oakland Athletics edged the Kansas City Royals, 8-5. Alberto Callaspo went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Royals. Luke Hochevar (6-8) took the loss after giving up seven runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. The Royals play the A's again tonight.
The Kansas City Royals have extended the contract of general manager Dayton Moore through the 2014 season.
The Kansas City Chiefs fired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey on Monday.
Funeral services for Doris Gean Dunlap of Boss, age 58, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Hanson Cemetery in Boss.
Graveside services for Ronald Henson of Rolla, age 58, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Pilot Know cemetery in Vida, Missouri. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
Funeral Mass for William R. “Bob” Cottrell of Steelville, age 71, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Leasburg. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Cemetery Fund.
Funeral services for Helen Deniszuk of St. Charles are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorials Chapel.
