The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5450, 6303 and 6305; and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5015. Purcell went on to say that ditch work would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 6190 and 6435; and that two men would be doing shop maintenance. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2140 and 2180, and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2240. Larson also reported that workers are servicing grader #31 and working on brush cutter #4. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the MRPC Board via a conference call approved to support the cost share project with the City of Salem and MoDOT for the improvements to be made to Route J. Salem Mayor Gary Brown came in and said that the project will cost $1,036,534 which includes water and sewer line replacement, eight man hole adjustments, reduction of the crown from Third Street to Highway 32-72, repaving from Highway 72 north to Highway 32-72, and some new entrances. The roadwork will cost $784,054 and the city’s portion of that is $392,027. On Tuesday, the Salem Board of Aldermen held a special meeting to allow the mayor to sign a Delta Regional Authority grant of $200,000 for the water and sewer line replacement and the eight manholes. Brown stated that another $119,827 is made of in-kind engineering services and MoDOT’s part comes to $272,200. He was asking for a letter of support from the commission for the project and the commission approved his request. Skiles also reported that he had a conversation with Emergency Management Director Brad Nash about the burn ban and he said that the conditions had changed enough to rescind the ban. The commission voted 3-0 to end the burn ban effective Thursday, August 30th. He did say that Nash talked with the National Weather Service about the possible upcoming weather from Tropical Storm Isaac. He then held a meeting with other Emergency Management Personnel at the Dent County Fire Station to discuss different scenarios that could occur with excessive rain. The commissioners wanted to remind everyone to beware of low water crossings if there are excessive rains, and take the long way around to be safe. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that if anyone has had an address change or is not sure where they are supposed to vote to please call her office at 729-4144. She said that the last day to register to vote in the General Election is October 10th and the first day to absentee vote is September 25th. At the last meeting, the commissioners approved the bid from MFA of $3.36 for 1,000 gallons of unleaded fuel. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

For many Missourians, the opening of dove season Saturday, September 1st marks the start of hunting season, and the state’s top mourning dove expert says this year’s season is full of promise. According to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), approximately 33,000 people hunt doves in the Show-Me State. Resource Scientist John Schulz says the mourning dove not only is the state’s most popular game bird, it also is the most democratic, attracting hunters from every walk of life. Missouri’s dove-hunting season runs from September 1st through November 9th. Mourning, collared and white-winged doves all are legal. The limit is 15 doves daily, which can be a combination of all three species. The possession limit is 30.Missouri residents ages 16 through 64 must buy a Small Game Hunting Permit to pursue doves. All dove hunters 16 and older must have a Missouri Migratory Bird Hunting Permit for dove hunting. MDC statistics show that hunters fire an average of five shots per dove bagged. If you kill a limit of 15 doves with fewer than three boxes of shotgun shells, first pick up all the empty hulls littering the ground around you. Leaving them is littering, and could earn you a ticket. Then pat yourself on the back for being an above-average wingshot.

Mark Twain National Forest visitors are asked to take precautions while visiting Missouri’s National Forests over Labor Day weekend August 31-September 2, 2012. Because of the potential of flash flooding, National Forest visitors are advised to stay away from riverbanks and rock bars, and to monitor conditions for possible flash flooding on low water crossings. Labor Day weekend is the last major holiday weekend for forest visits for the year.
