The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County roads 5110, 5115, 6580, 6585 and 6010. Purcell went on to say that normal 500-hour maintenance was being done on grader #33. Purcell added that a crew was patching chip and seal on Dent County Road 5015. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 6160, 2540, 4330 and 3227 and that brush was being cut on county roads 2060, 3030 and 3020. Larson went on to say that materials were also being hauled to county road 6160. Commission Larson added that on Wednesday he attended the Local Public Agency training by MoDOT in Jefferson City.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Curley had discussed the abstract issue that was brought before the Commission on Monday. Curley said that it is not necessarily the Commission’s responsibility to address the issue and that it is up to the individual landowners to pursue removal from the recorded abstract. The Commissioners pointed out that really the only responsibility of the county is to maintain the road. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that her office is still in the process of sending out voter identification cards. Curley stressed that voters are to only send back in ID cards that have been corrected on the back due to incorrect information. Correct cards are not to be sent back since the result is that the voter then has no voter identification card.  The Courthouse is closed Monday due to the Labor Day Holiday.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday at 9:00 in the Courthouse and it is open to the public.

Hunters who want to pursue ducks or geese on wetland areas managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation can start applying for reservations September 1^st. All waterfowl hunting applications are handled exclusively online. Hunters have from September 1^st through 18^th to apply for reservations at 12 Conservation Department managed wetland areas identified in the 2013-2014  Waterfowl Hunting Digest. The digest is available from permit vendors statewide, at Conservation Department offices and nature centers, or at mdc.mo.gov. To apply, visit mdc.mo.gov/node/ 3806. Drawing results will be available October 1^st at the same website. Hunting opportunities at Otter Slough, Eagle Bluffs, and Grand Pass conservation areas will be handled through the Quick Draw system again this year, but with one change. Instead of allocating one in five hunting spots through the daily “poor-line” drawing, one in four hunting spots will go to “poor-line” hunters. Quick Draw applications are made a few days before the hunting period. Reservations at the Conservation Department’s other 12 managed wetlands are assigned in September for the entire hunting season. Whether applying through the traditional reservation system or Quick Draw, hunters need the nine-digit identification number found at the top of hunting permits or next to the bar code on Conservation Heritage Cards. To apply for reservations under Quick Draw, hunters over age 15 and under age 65 need a small-game hunting and a migratory bird permit. Hunters under age 16 only need a Conservation Identification Number. Neither Quick Draw nor the traditional system allows nonresidents to apply for reservations. However, resident hunters who draw reservations can include nonresidents in their hunting parties. Nonresidents also can take part in the daily, on-site “poor-line” drawings under both systems. Unclaimed reservations under both the Quick Draw and traditional draw system are added to those available in the “poor line,” where hunters without reservations can draw for a chance.

The Salem Tiger Football team will open up their season tonight, as they’ll be in Houston to play the Tigers at 7:00. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with Tiger Talk with Coach McNamee at 6:30.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball team will be in action this weekend, as they’ll be participating in the Houston Tournament.

City of Salem Youth Flag Football Program is coming up quickly. Final sign-ups will be held today from 4:00 to 6:00 and on Saturday, August 31^st from 9:00 am until noon. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby at the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory). This league is for all boys and girls that are currently in the 3^rd to 6^th grades. The cost is $20 per child. The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will start a crucial three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at PNC Park. The Cardinals are 78-55 on the year and hold a one game lead over the Pirates for the lead in the NL Central. Shelby Miller will be on the mound for St. Louis opposite the Pirate’s Francisco Liriano. KSMO Radio will broadcast the beginning of the game, starting at 5:30, then cut away for Salem football and then play back the sixth inning on after the Salem game.

Bruce Chen tossed one-run ball into the sixth, and a big second inning staked Kansas City to a 3-1 decision over Minnesota to finish off a three-game sweep. Alex Gordon, Alcides Escobar and Chris Getz knocked in a run each in the deciding frame for the Royals, who finished the year a franchise-best 15-4 against their long-time division rivals. KC won its final seven contests at Target Field this year, finishing 8-2 on the road in the season series. The Royals start a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays tonight.

A Graveside service for Kenneth Melvin Sampson of Spartanburg, South Carolina, age 75, was held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Lake Springs Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Lamb of God Lutheran Church or the Soup Kitchen in Spartanburg, South Carolina. All arrangements are under the direction of the Salem Chapel of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Robert Lee Brand of East End, age 81, was held Sunday at 1:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Interment will be in the Sam Crocker Cemetery in East End. Memorials may be made to the Sam Crocker Cemetery or the Viburnum Christian Church.

Funeral services for Blaine E. Stroburg of Salem, age 81, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until service time on Monday. Interment will be in the Blackwell Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Blaine Stroburg.
