The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5400, 6090, 6100, 6190 and 6430; while work crews will pick up brush and do roadwork on Dent County Road 4180. Purcell went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2400, 4100 and 6320. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 2030, 2055, 3330 and 4430; and that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2180, 2190, 2195 and 3210. Larson reported that materials were going to be added to Dent County Road 2060, and that the District 2 road crew as well as three members from the District 1 road crew would be attending a grader seminar in Osage Beach today. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind anyone who was going to submit a grant application for waste reduction or recycling projects to the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District needs to do so by this Friday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley again wanted to remind anyone who has moved since the last time they voted to please contact her office at 729-4144 so that the voter records may be updated. Bryon Craig attended the meeting representing Serve 2011 which is a contingent of people who are donating their time and expertise to improve the community. Craig said that the first project that this group would like to undertake is to paint the sidewalks around the courthouse square a brick red color to help make the courthouse stand out. He said that the group would maintain the paint on the sidewalks in the future. Craig said that he already had monetary commitments enough to cover the cost of the materials, but did ask that if the commissioners wanted to contribute to the project, that would also be welcomed. The commissioners approved the sidewalk-painting project and also agreed to provide one-half of the cost of the materials for this particular project. At the last meeting, the new MoDOT Area Engineer Preston Kramer came by to discuss upcoming projects and bridges in the county. Assessor Brenda Bell also came in at the last meeting with a mapping contract from Landmark Surveying Company. The cost of the contract is $575 per month and the commissioners approved the contract. The next regular meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The public tax rate hearing for the four Dent County funds was held Monday morning at the Dent County Commissioner’s office at 10:00. The board reviewed the general revenue fund and in 2010, the tax rate was 3.5 cents per $100 assessed valuation. The commissioners voted to leave the general revenue tax rate at 3.5 cents per $100 assessed value. The commissioners also agreed to leave the road and bridge tax rate of 25.50 cents per $100 assessed valuation the same for the 2011-year. The Senate Bill 40 Fund tax rate in 2010 was 15 cents per $100 assessed valuation and the commission voted to leave the rate the same for 2011. Last year, the Senior Citizens Fund tax rate was raised to 4.66 cents per $100 assessed valuation and they recommended leaving the rate at 4.66 cents per $100 assessed valuation for 2011. The public hearing was then adjourned.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released preliminary Annual Performance Reports (APR) for 2011. The APR is based on academic-performance standards that are the foundation of the state’s current accreditation program for all school districts.  For districts serving grades K-12, 14 standards cover measure such as test scores (ACT, state-required MAP and end-of-course tests), attendance, graduation rates, and other academic indicators. The seven standards for K-8 districts include MAP scores, attendance, and grade point average. Salem R-80 met 14 out of the 14 standards and qualifies for the Distinction in Performance award for the third year in a row.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host the Ava Bears this afternoon at 4:30 at the Salem City Park. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Last night both the varsity and JV teams defeated St. James. The varsity is now 3-2 on the year.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be in St. James starting at 5:30 for their first match of the year.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday and start a three game series with Milwaukee tonight starting at 6:40 on KSMO Radio. If the Cardinals have any thoughts of reaching the post-season, they will have to sweep the series or take at least two of three games.

Johnny Giavotella knocked in three runs and scored once as the Royals took down the Tigers, 9-5, to open a four-game set. Salvador Perez went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI in Kansas City's third win in five games. Luke Hochevar (9-10) pitched into the eighth inning, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning seven to snap a four-start winless skid. Mike Moustakas extended his career-best hit streak to 12 games with a single in the ninth inning. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight in Detroit.

Funeral services for Fedora “Dodie” Sargent of Steelville, age 94, will be held Tuesday at 5:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 3:00 until service time Tuesday. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Funeral services for Karen Ann Wynn of Steelville, age 59, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Private graveside services for Vera Aline Kehr of Steelville, age 90, will be held Friday at the Earney Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Memorials may be given to the Gibbs Care Building Fund c/o Britton-Bennett Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Joelene Bolerjack of Salem, age 76, will be private and are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
