The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their public tax rate hearing and regular monthly meeting Thursday evening. After the tax rate hearing attended by all Board members and staff along with local media and a hand full of people, the board discussed the possible tax rates that the school could use before the tax rate hearing was adjourned. The regular monthly meeting was then called to order and after approval of the amended agenda, the consent agenda, and communications, Board member Carol Jordan was presented with a certificate for having completed Board training. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf then reported that professional development days got off to a great start as did the opening day of school in the R-80 school district. The Lower Elementary reported 260 students, the Upper Elementary recorded 337 students, while the Junior High had 185 students and the High School reported 635 students for a total of 1,417 students thus far for the 2010 school year. This number is less than the total of 1,508 students for the 2009 school year and 1,563 for the 2008 school year. Rumpf reported that the MSBA fall meeting was to be held on September 23rd, which is also the next R-80 Board of Education regular monthly meeting, and the annual conference would be held sometime in October. The Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) report, which is a report card from the federal government, showed much improvement overall in the R-80 district from 50.8% for 2009 to 67.4% for 2010. The district had recently declared surplus property and with all the bids in, the Board accepted those bids for the items, totaling $4,174, and they are to be picked up by August 31st. The Board then approved the Annual Secretary of the Board Report (ASBR) for 2009, which is a summary of all the financial transactions that occurred during the year. The Board then approved the tax rate for 2010 to remain the same at 2.75 cents per $100 assessed valuation. The Board then approved the resignations of Justin Crain as Communication Arts teacher and Faye Parker as an aide, both effective immediately. The Board approved the A+ Partnership Plan for 2010 which has added a school flex program this year as the alternative school program is gone from last year. The Board, after some discussion, then approved to amend Board Policy GBH, whereby, district employees can be their own child's friend on internet sites such as Face book, Twitter, etc. provided certain guidelines are followed. The Board then voted to go into Closed Session to discuss personnel.
An accident happened in St. Charles County Saturday at 5:30 in the afternoon on Highway 94 just west of the Howell Road that left two Steelville people with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Harley Davidson driven westbound by 49-year old Henry Gibson of Steelville, failed to negotiate a curve and crossed into the eastbound lane striking the left front of a 2005 Toyota Highlander driven eastbound by 40-year old John R. Brickner of O’Fallon. Both vehicles continued off the south edge of the roadway after the collision. Gibson and his wife, 43-year old Virginia Gibson of Steelville, suffered serious injuries. Henry Gibson was taken by Arch Helicopter to St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur, while Virginia Gibson was flown by Life Flight to the same hospital. John Brickner suffered minor injuries in the accident and was treated at the scene. His wife, 36-year old Kelly Brickner, and two children, four-year old Logan and nine-year old Zachary, all suffered moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to the St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Crash City. Everyone was wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct a special meeting on Tuesday, August 31st at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and review of the minutes from the previous meeting in old business, the Board will address the guttering and the garage doors at the station and a budget adjustment for 2011. In new business the Board will set the tax levy rate for the 2010 year. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The special meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Thayer Bobcats scored 20 first half points, then held off the Tigers the rest of the way as they defeated Salem, 20-14 Friday night at the Salem High School Football Field. Ryan Smith and Jared Shorey scored for the Tigers as they fall to 0-1 overall and in the SCA. They will play Friday at Houston starting at 7:00.
The Salem Lady Varsity Softball Team lost to Vienna by a score of 11 to 0 Friday. Samantha Parker had the lone hit for a single. Salem is 0-4 on the year. The Salem JV softball team won against Vienna by a score of 3 to 1. Cortney Putman had a single and Emily Sullivan had a single that scored 2 runs. The Lady Tigers will host St. James today starting at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Fields and you can hear the game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com.
John Lannan spun 7 2/3 solid innings and Mike Morse belted a two-run home run as Washington continued to put a crimp in St. Louis' playoff push with a 4-2 win Sunday to close a four-game series. Adam Wainwright (17-9) absorbed the loss after giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over five frames for the Cardinals, who fell a season-high five games behind Cincinnati in the National League Central. The Cardinals start a three game serie in Houston against the Astros tonight at 6:45 on KSMO.
Mitch Maier homered and drove in two runs, helping the Kansas City Royals salvage a three-game series with a 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. Alex Gordon added two hits, while Kila Ka'aihue had an RBI double for the Royals, who had lost four of their last five. Brayan Pena drove in a pair of runs in the win. Bruce Chen (9-7) won for the fourth time in six starts after allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks in six-plus frames. The Royals start a three-game series with the Texas Rangers tonight.
The Kansas City Royals have placed reliever Kanekoa Texeira on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain. The move is retroactive to Saturday. In a corresponding move, the Royals activated reliever Robinson Tejeda from the 15-day DL.
Mike Kafka threw the game-winning 18-yard touchdown pass to Riley Cooper with 23 seconds left to lift Philadelphia to a 20-17 come from behind win over Kansas City in preseason action at Arrowhead Stadium. Matt Cassel connected on 14-of-23 for only 85 yards with a TD and interception. Rookie Dexter McCluster added 47 yards rushing on eight tries while Jamaal Charles chipped in with 40 yards on six attempts for the Chiefs, who dropped to 0-3 in regular season tune-ups.
Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Cameron Sheffield has been released from the hospital after suffering a neck injury in Friday's preseason game against Philadelphia. Sheffield, who has movement in all his extremities, suffered the injury in the third quarter of Friday's contest when he was involved in a helmet-to-helmet collision. He was then immobilized and carted off the field. Sheffield was a 2010 fifth-round pick out of Troy.
St. Louis Rams top wide receiver Donnie Avery will miss the entire 2010 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Avery will have to undergo surgery to correct the problem.

Memorial service for Eric D. Pickett of Salem, age 26, will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 7:00. Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Memorial services for Vada U. Hines (Allen), of Salem, age 74 will be Tuesday at the Salem Church of Christ on Highway 19 South in Salem with Rick Pitchford officiating. A potluck dinner will follow in the fellowship hall.
Funeral services for Glen “Sonny” Gillam of Sullivan, age 63, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:30 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville.
Cremation arrangements for Amber Jo Mathis of Salem, age 10, are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the family of Amber Mathis.
