On August 26
th, The Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a burglary from a resident located off of Dent County Road 549. The incident was reported to have occurred sometime during the previous week. Reported taken from a garage were: an aluminum tri-fold ATV ramps, 10 gallons of gasoline, a red plastic 5-gallon container, a Dremel tool, blue floor jack, red floor jack and a shop light. The report is still under investigation. Also on August the 26
th, a Dent County deputy received information on the location of an ATV that had been reported stolen from a residence off of Dent County Road 304 back on August 17
th. Upon arrival at the location off of Dent County Road 517, the ATV was identified as the one reported stolen and it was recovered. Further investigation led to 18-year old Zachery Shawn McMurry of Salem being taken into custody. Three felony warrants were issued, one for Theft/Stealing and one for Tampering with a Motor Vehicle in the 1
st degree, one for Burglary in the 2
nd Degree, and bond was set at $17,000. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.
Labor Day weekend is fast approaching. Many families will plan one last special outing to mark the end of summer. The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind motorists to expect a change in traffic patterns during the Labor Day weekend. To help ensure everyone's safety, offer assistance, and enforce Missouri's traffic laws, the Highway Patrol will schedule every available officer to patrol the roadways. The Labor Day counting period will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 31st, and end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 3rd. The Patrol, along with local law enforcement, will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), which will coincide with the You Drink, You Drive, You Lose campaign. If alcohol is part of your Labor Day holiday celebration, don’t drink and drive. Getting arrested could be the least of your concerns. There are court costs, medical bills, or perhaps jail time. If you kill or injure someone, you’ll pay a price for the rest of your life. If you choose to drink this Labor Day holiday, choose a designated driver. The Patrol asks everyone to help make this holiday weekend a safe one. Drivers are being urged to obey Missouri’s traffic laws, and watch for changes in traffic patterns due to the number of travelers or road construction. Everyone in the vehicle should buckle up. The Patrol, along with other state and local law enforcement agencies, has worked diligently to decrease traffic fatalities in Missouri through educational and enforcement programs. Thus far, the 2007 fatality totals are at a 13 percent decrease when comparing the totals to the same time period in 2006. Last year, 18 people were killed and 502 persons were injured in 1,108 traffic crashes occurring during the Labor Day holiday counting period. That is one person killed or injured every nine minutes. Over the past five years (2002-2006), 73 persons were killed and 2,822 were injured in Labor Day holiday crashes. Travelers needing assistance, or reporting a drunk or careless driver, illegal activity on the highways, or a stalled motorist can call the Patrol's Emergency Hotline at 1-800-525-5555 or, on a cellular phone, dial *55. The Missouri Department of Conservation announces that Missouri has plenty of doves, but some fields are not ready. Although doves are abundant, finding those birds on opening day of dove hunting season might be a little harder than usual on account of the weather. The dry weather kept crops from producing which results in spotty quality of dove fields. Missouri Dove Hunting Season runs from September 1st through November 9th. Mourning, collard and white-tailed doves are all legal. The limit is 12 doves of all three species. Dove hunters age 16 through 64 must buy a Small Game Hunting Permit to pursue doves. All dove hunters 16 and older must have a Missouri Migratory Bird Hunting Permit for dove hunting. The Salem Football Tigers begin their season tonight as they will host the Mountain Grove Panthers at 7:00. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt at 6:25. You can also hear the game online at www.ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers coming off their opening night win over St. James, will host Pacific today at 5:00. The match will be at the Upper Elementary School Gym because of the football game.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be on the road at Steelville to face the Lady Cardinals at 4:30 this afternoon.
Roy Oswalt allowed four hits over seven scoreless innings, and the Houston Astros blanked the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-0, in the second installment of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. Rick Ankiel and Aaron Miles both had two hits for St. Louis, who remained two games behind first-place Chicago in the NL Central. The Cubs lost to Milwaukee, 6-1, on Wednesday. Kip Wells (6-15) gave up five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts over six-plus innings for the Cardinals. The Cards and Astros play this afternoon at 1:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Tony Pena Jr.'s two-run single capped a five-run first inning, as the Royals continued to frustrate the Tigers with a 5-0 victory at Kauffman Stadium. Esteban German tripled in a run in the first inning, while Grudzielanek and Alex Gordon had RBI singles for Kansas City, which has taken the first two contests of the three-game series. Zack Greinke, who was put back into the team's rotation last week, was lifted after four innings for the Royals. Ryan Braun (2-0) threw 2 2/3 innings to get the win and David Riske tossed the final 2 1/3 frames for his fourth save. The Royals and Tigers will play this afternoon.
The St. Louis Rams and Kansas Chiefs will meet in the Governor's Cup pre-season game tonight at the Edward Jones Dome. St. Louis is 1-2 in the preseason while KC is 0-3.
City of Salem Youth Soccer Program signups will be held today and Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Salem Freedom Activity Center Lobby for boys and girls from age 4 to 12. The cost is $15.00 per child. For more information, call the Parks and Recreation Department at 729-6290.
