The Salute to the Timber Industry Parade & Timber Fun Day will start at the Courthouse downtown in Salem on Labor Day Monday, September 2
nd at 11:00 am. The parade route will go down 4
th Street to McArthur, turn south on McArthur and end on Franklin. Grand Marshall’s for the parade are David McCall and his sisters Pearl Mowers and Maybell Pyeatt. David worked in the timber industry all his life and his sisters won a log-sawing contest using a crosscut saw in 1954. Terry Cunningham, retired chief forester for Pioneer Forest, will be driving a 1951 Studebaker convertible in the parade with the Grand Marshall’s on board. Everyone is invited out to the Salute to the Timber Industry Parade and Timber Fun Day.
An accident occurred on Thursday, August 22nd at 2:41 in the afternoon on the 1000 block of Highway 19 South. According to the Salem Police report, electric wires were pulled from the Mexican Restaurant and Moser Pharmacy, which caused a power outage when a delivery driver traveled slightly to the south of his normal route when the trailer caught the overhead electric wires. There was no damage to the trailer, at this time the extent of damage to the Mexican Restaurant and Moser Pharmacy is unknown.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports for Dent County. On Thursday, August 15th in Dent County, 28-year old Clarissa A. Luce of Salem was arrested on five misdemeanor warrants from the Salem Police Department for shoplifting, property damage, larceny, and two disorderly conduct charges. She is being held on bond at the Dent County jail. On Saturday, August 24th at 3:15 in the afternoon, 55-year old Eli Troyer of Salem was arrested on a felony warrant from Monroe County in Michigan for failure to pay child support. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on no bond. Later that night at 11:40, 62-year old Alfred Orcutt of Salem was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of the accident, careless and imprudent driving resulting in an accident, and no proof of insurance. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and then released. On Monday, August 26th at 7:04 in the evening, 46-year old Peggy Snider of Salem was arrested and charged with a first offense of driving while intoxicated and speeding. She was held in the Dent County Jail. On Tuesday, August 27th at 10:00 in the morning, 34-year old Donny Boxx of Salem was arrested on a felony Dent County warrant for a probation violation. He is being held in the Dent County Jail on no bond.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind Missouri’s travelers to make safety part of their Labor Day weekend. The patrol strongly urges the use of seat belts when traveling in any kind of vehicle and life jackets when on a Missouri lake, river, or stream. In 2012, seven people were killed and 413 injured in Missouri over the Labor Day holiday in 1,086 traffic crashes. One person was killed or injured every 11.1 minutes. Of that total, troopers worked 201 traffic crashes, which included 144 injuries and four of the fatalities over the 2012 Labor Day holiday. Troopers arrested 147 people for driving while intoxicated during last year’s holiday weekend. The 2013 counting period for the Labor Day holiday will be from 6:00 pm on Friday, August 30th, and run through 11:59 pm on Monday, September 2nd. The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the Labor Day holiday weekend. All available officers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and alcohol laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists. Troopers throughout the state will also participate in a 20-Mile Trooper operation on August 30 and again on September 2. This operation will include Interstates 35, 44, 55, and 70, and U.S. Highways 60 and 61. Troopers will be targeting all traffic violations, and be especially vigilant of aggressive driving violations. Please buckle up in your vehicle and wear a life jacket on or near water. Shelby Friend hit a three-run home run to lead the Newburg Lady Wolves past the Salem Lady Tigers on Wednesday, 15-0, in their season opener. Salem is now 0-1 on the year and will play at Bakersfield today at 4:30.
City of Salem Youth Flag Football Program is coming up quickly. Sign-ups will be held on today and Friday, August 30th from 4:00 to 6:00 and the Final sign-up will be held on Saturday, August 31st from 9:00 am until noon. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby at the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory). This league is for all boys and girls that are currently in the 3rd to 6th grades. On the cusp of being swept and losing even more precious ground in the NL Central division race, the Cincinnati Reds brought out the lumber against Adam Wainwright. The Reds roughed up the St. Louis ace for a career-high nine runs over just two innings in their 10-0 triumph over the Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set. Wainwright (15-8), who hurled a season-high 128 pitches to notch his fifth complete game of the season and 16th of his career last time out, was looking for his NL-leading 16th win. The Cards have the day off.
The St. Louis Cardinals recalled pitchers Michael Blazek and Fernando Salas from Triple-A Memphis and optioned pitchers Carlos Martinez and Tyler Lyons to Memphis.
Salvador Perez went 4-for-5 with a pair of two-run home runs as the Kansas City Royals took an 8-1 win over the Minnesota Twins in the second of a three-game series. Alex Gordon hit a solo homer and scored twice, while Billy Butler drove in two and scored twice for the Royals, who have won their past four games. Danny Duffy (2-0) pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and striking out seven to win his second straight start. The Royals and Twins play again this afternoon at 12:10.
The Kansas City Royals have signed veteran first baseman Carlos Pena to a minor league contract. The Royals have also recalled pitcher Danny Duffy and activated pitcher Luke Hochevar from the paternity leave list. To make room on the roster the Royals sent down pitchers Wade Davis and Louis Coleman.

Funeral services for William Sidney Black of Rolla, age 70, will be held Friday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Memorials may be made to the family of William Sidney Black.
Memorial services for Alexis Marie Henson of Newburg, age 11, will be Friday at 5:30 at the First Baptist Church in Viburnum. Visitation will be at the church from 4:30 until service time at the First Baptist Church in Viburnum. Memorials may be given to the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
A Graveside service for Kenneth Melvin Sampson of Spartanburg, South Carolina, age 75, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Lake Springs Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Lamb of God Lutheran Church or the Soup Kitchen in Spartanburg, South Carolina. All arrangements are under the direction of the Salem Chapel of the Wilson Mortuary.
Funeral services for Robert Lee Brand of East End, age 81, will be held Sunday at 1:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Sam Crocker Cemetery in East End. Memorials may be made to the Sam Crocker Cemetery or the Viburnum Christian Church.
