The Salem Police Department has released several reports. On Thursday, August 9th at 4:56 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that a 29-year old Salem male had assaulted a 21-year old Salem female. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. Later that morning at 11:00, an officer was dispatched to the Village Gallery in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone unknown took a heavy-duty, 16-foot trailer valued at $2,700 from the lot. That afternoon at 1:44, an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of East Bryan in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone unknown took a 2002 Yamaha ATV, valued at $3,500, from the carport of a residence. Then that night at 10:42, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that two males in the area of West Franklin and Park threw a rock damaging a windshield on a 2001 Chevrolet, causing approximately $250 worth of damage. On Friday, August 10th at 11:42 in the morning, a 37-year old male of Bentonville, Arkansas was transported to the Royal Oaks Hospital in Windsor in lieu of a mental commitment order. That same evening at 5:00, an officer made contact with a 27-year old Salem female who had two active warrants from the City of Rolla. She was taken into custody on the warrants and incarcerated pending extradition. On Sunday, August 12th at 8:55 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone unknown took the faceplate of a stereo valued at $90 from a vehicle parked in the 1000 block of East Monday. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts or property damage, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police by calling 729-4242.

An accident occurred at 8:35 Monday morning in Phelps County that took the life of two men from St. Louis. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Mustang driven by 28-year old Jama A. Ali of St. Louis was traveling westbound on I-44 about eight miles west of Rolla. The Mustang ran off the left side of the roadway, returned to the roadway, and struck the rear of a 1999 Peter built Tractor driven westbound by 51-year old Kenneth P. Carroll of West Plains. Ali and an occupant in the Mustang, 41-year old Liban Dirie of St. Louis, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones at 8:58 am. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Mustang was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing. There was no damage to the Peter built tractor and was it was driven from the scene.

How do you know when a teen is ready to become a babysitter? The Council for a Healthy Dent County will sponsor a Babysitters Training Academy on Saturday, September 8th from 8 am-4 pm. This academy is for teens from 11 ½ years and up that want to learn how to be a safe and responsible babysitter!  Seating is limited, the first 9 registered will be able to participate. Local experts will be teaching these sessions: First Aid/CPR, taught by SMDH Community Educator Cindy Fry; the Physical Care of a Child, taught by Registered Nurse Jenna Dunn;  Behavior, Ages and Stages, taught by educator Stephanie Floyd; Activities for Babysitters, taught by educator Karen Benowitz; Healthy Snacks for Children, taught by University of Missouri Extension Food and Nutrition Associate Melissa Dubois; and  Good Business Practices for a Babysitter taught by University of Missouri Extension Family Education Specialist Sarah Traub. After completion of the one-day academy, teens will receive certificates and First Aid/CPR cards.  The academy will be held at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 W. The 12th Tiger Club’s Football Parade has been RESCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH. Businesses, clubs, organizations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade and show their Tiger Pride and Spirit. Floats and vehicles should line up around 5:30 pm, between the City of Salem Administration Building and the East Salem Hill. The parade will take off around 6:00 pm and will arrive at the Salem High School Football Stadium before the beginning at the game. Cortney Putman threw a complete game while striking out four and also went 3 for 5 at the plate with four RBI to help the Salem Lady Tigers down the 4-time defending SCA champions Ava Lady Bears, 12-1. Sam Parker added three RBI as Salem moves to 6-2 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will play next Tuesday, as they will host Houston.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to St. James in two sets on Tuesday, 25-10 and 25-19. JV faired the same as they also lost in two sets, 18-25 and 20-25. Salem is now 0-1 on the year and will play at Pacific on Thursday

The Salem Tigers Football game with Confluence Prep has been moved from 5:30 this Friday night to 5:30 this Thursday night due to the possibility of excessive rain Friday from Hurricane Isaac. The game will be at the Salem High School Football Field and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio, ksmroadio.com and Fidelitylocal6.com.

Pedro Alvarez went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI to help the Pirates top the Cardinals, 9-0, in the middle test of a three-game series. Jake Westbrook (13-10) fell to 1-7 lifetime against the Pirates after getting touched for seven runs on 11 hits and four walks in five innings. The Cardinals still hold the second wild-card spot in the National League, a position the Pirates trail by two games. St. Louis played most of the game without All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, who exited after a home-plate collision with Josh Harrison in the second inning. The Cardinals and Pirates play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 5:30.

Mike Moustakas had three hits, including the go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals edge the Detroit Tigers, 9-8, in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Moustakas finished with three RBI, while Billy Butler went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Alex Gordon added a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Royals, who snapped a two-game skid. Alcides Escobar and Salvador Perez also drove in runs. The Royals and Tigers will play again tonight.

The New York Jets have acquired right tackle Jason Smith, a former first-round draft pick, from the St. Louis Rams for right tackle Wayne Hunter. Both players lost their starting spot during this preseason due to poor play.

Funeral services for James Charles Biggs of Salem, age 81, will be held today at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Green Forest Cemetery and the Upper Parker Community Church.

Funeral services for Karrah Lavaughn Steen of Newburg, age 14, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held today from 3:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Brookshire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Karrah Levaughn Steen Scholarship Fund.

Graveside services for Irene C. Emory of Willow Springs, formerly of Salem, age 94, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Hospice Compassus Foundation.

Funeral services for Roy C. O'Dell of Salem, age 87, will be Friday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Chapel.

Funeral services for Daniel Raymond Pitts of Cuba, age 60, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until time of service.
