The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5380 and 5390 and a crew would be on Dent County Road 2460 adding gravel to a bridge, because a school bus is dragging when it crosses. Simpson also said that brush would be cut on various roads east of Salem, and south of Salem on Dent County Road 6220. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2620, 2650 and 6140. Tune also said that a crew would be adding base rock to Dent County Road 2540 and cutting brush on Dent County Road 3220. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was pleased to announce that Stan Podorski, owner and general manager of KSMO Radio is this year’s recipient for the Meramec Regional Planning Commissions Outstanding Contribution to Community Award. Podorski will be honored during MRPC’s annual awards banquet in St. Robert on November 12
th. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the Secretary of State has issued a state-wide recount of the Democratic Attorney General’s Race that will take place next Thursday. Bernie English came by the meeting to discuss with Commissioner Simpson, water and bridge issues he has with Dent County Road 6080. English feels that the bridge causes debris to back up, causing water to back up onto his property during heavy rains. Commissioner Simpson said that the county could either burn the debris from underneath the bridge or Mr. English would have to allow the county onto his property to remove the debris. Simpson said he would have to look at the problem before any further action is taken. At the previous meeting, Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock came by to announce that there would be no tax sale this year. Craig Ruble stopped in to discuss DNR Corner Monuments and said he is considering raising the price to $500 in 2009. The county purchases 15 corner monuments a year and DNR would pay for $3,750 worth in 2009. The Commission was in agreement with Mr. Ruble’s contract and all signed. Sandy Hogan with the Sheltered Workshop also came by the meeting to announce that Jerry Lough has resigned from the SB-40 Board, leaving two vacancies. The Commission will not meet on Monday in observance of Labor Day, but will meet again on Thursday and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving a burglary. On Saturday, August 23rd at 11:00 in the morning, the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a report of a burglary located at a residence off of Highway 32 West. It was reported a shop and garage building had been entered and taken from the buildings were a concrete saw, several diamond tipped blades, walk behind concrete saw, plate compactor, Milwaukee hammer drill, several hammer bit drill bits, Craftsman 80-gallon compressor, Honda power washer, 2003 Honda XR50 motorcycle, bull float & handle, 10 sheets OSB tongue and groove, power concrete trowel, re-bar cutter, chainsaw, and several fishing poles. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.
Labor Day weekend is here and the Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists to expect a change in traffic patterns during the Labor Day weekend. The Labor Day counting period will begin at 6 pm tonight and end at 11:59 pm on Monday, September 1st. The Patrol, along with local law enforcement, will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), as well as the You Drink, You Drive, You Lose campaign (now through September 1st) during this holiday weekend. The patrol urges drivers to obey Missouri’s traffic laws, and watch for changes in traffic patterns due to the number of travelers or road construction. To help ensure everyone's safety, offer assistance, and enforce Missouri's traffic laws, the Highway Patrol will schedule every available officer to patrol the roadways. In addition, troopers will be assigned to 15-mile increments along Interstates 29, 44, 55, and 70, in an effort to increase awareness and safety. Last year, 14 people were killed and 537 persons were injured in 1,107 traffic crashes occurring during the Labor Day holiday counting period. That is one person killed or injured every 8.5 minutes. The City of Salem Fall Youth Soccer Program will begin soon. The Salem Parks and Recreation Department will be holding signups for boys and girls ages 4 through 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM with final signups today and tomorrow. The cost per child is $15.00. ALL signups will be held in the lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (the old Armory.) A memorial service for Richard Alan Tiefenthaler of Salem, age 77, will be held tonight at 7:30 pm at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will also be today from 5:30 until service time. A Memorial Service and Bar-B-Q for Alan Otto of Cherryville, formerly of St. Louis, age 50, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Steelville City Park. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Nathan Lee Cremer of Rolla, age 18, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Monday at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla.
Funeral service for Eugene S. Barwick of Rolla, age 87, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:0 at the Fisrt Baptict Church in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7;00 Monday at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. A Masonic service will be held at 5:00 Monday. memorials may be made to the Kids Keep Christ of the First Baptist Church or to the Barwick/Newton National Law Enforcement Mmeorial Fund.
Funeral services for Libertee Payton Medley of Salem, age 3, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Medley Family.
Funeral services for Tad Worley of Cherryville, age 86, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude's Children Fund.
Funeral services for Robert Paul Van Horn Sr. of Rolla, age 70, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Rolla.
