A Crawford County jury found 48-year old Michael Wayne Cameron, of Rolla, innocent of second-degree manslaughter Friday. Cameron was charged March of 2006, of acting in criminal negligence to cause the death of 25-year-old Jessica McCabe, who died from a drug overdose January 1, 2006. Charges filed by Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Gray alleged Cameron removed McCabe from the custody of her mother, Cindy Ehrlich, without permission the night of December 31, 2005, New Year’s Eve. Cameron was accused of taking McCabe to obtain a prescription controlled substance and watching her ingest a large quantity of the drugs, though he knew she already was under the influence of other substances, and then failing to seek medical attention. After initially being charged in March, Cameron evaded law enforcement for several weeks before turning himself in to the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. On April 6, 2006, he was released on $5,000 bond and failed to appear in court again on July 12, 2006, which resulted in a second search for his whereabouts. Authorities finally caught up with Cameron in August 2006, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department took him into custody. He was arraigned on the charge of second-degree manslaughter September 11th in Dent County. Cameron pleaded not guilty to the charge October 20th and was released on $250,000 bond. He was granted a change of venue to Crawford County, where a jury trial took place Friday. According to Cameron’s attorney, Tony Skouby, of St. James, the trial started at about 8:30 a.m. and after two-to-three hours of deliberation the jury returned a verdict of innocent at about 9:00 p.m.
An accident occurred Monday afternoon at 4:20 in Phelps County on Highway 68 about 11 miles south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Yamaha driven by 37-year old Jolly Barak of Salem was traveling southbound on highway 68. The Yamaha rear brakes locked causing it to travel off the right side of the roadway and strike a tree. Barak suffered minor injuries and refused treatment. The Yamaha sustained extensive damage and was towed by private conveyance.
On August 16, 2007, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper obtained a search warrant for the residence and property of 36-year old Michael D. Gilliam of St. James. At approximately 8:00 a.m., August 17, the search warrant was served at Gilliam’s residence, which is located on Phelps County Road 1060. During their investigation officers located methamphetamine, marijuana, several items of drug paraphernalia, a stolen all-terrain vehicle, and several firearms. Gilliam was arrested for two counts of distribution of a controlled substance, felony possession of a controlled substance, felony and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property, and two outstanding warrants. Gilliam was incarcerated in the Phelps County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond. Assisting in this investigation were members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop C SWAT team, Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and the South Central Drug Task Force. The St. James Fire Department and the St. James Ambulance Service also provided assistance.

Braden Looper tossed seven innings of four-hit ball and Chris Duncan belted a three-run homer in the first, as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Houston Astros, 7-0, to open a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. Looper (11-10), who is 3-1 over the past five trips to the hill, struck out four batters and walked only one before Russ Springer and Troy Percival completed the shutout. Rick Ankiel went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice for St. Louis, which has won three straight and six of eight games to stay two games behind Chicago in the NL Central. Albert Pujols finished 3-for-5 and scored a run in the rout. Cardinals’ manager Tony LaRussa now sits at 1,041 wins as St. Louis' manager, tying Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst as the winningest manager all-time for the Cards. St. Louis got back to .500 for the first time since it was 6-6 on April 16. St. Louis is 7-3 against the Astros this season. The two teams play again tonight on KSMO Radio starting at 7:00.
Brian Bannister threw six innings to win for the sixth time in seven decisions, as Kansas City beat Detroit, 6-3, extending the Tigers' deficit in the American League's Central Division. Billy Butler clubbed a two-run homer and Mark Grudzielanek had a pair of hits and scored twice for the Royals, who snapped a two-game skid by taking the opener of the three-game set. Bannister (11-7) allowed 11 hits and two runs while fanning five to win his third consecutive start. The only loss for the righty in his last eight outings came August 12 against Toronto. The Royals are in the middle of a 13- game stretch of exclusivity within the Central Division, going 3-4 to this point. KC and Detroit play again tonight at Kaufmann Stadium.

Funeral services for William Edward Bierbower of Salem, age 74, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church.
